This is not a demo but a take during the recording process. And if I remember correctly there is a demo of "Rest Your Love On Me" as it was written for someone else and sent out to them (and no, not Conway Twitty). But I believe there is a demo of that one somewhere out there (I amy be wrong).

This is not a demo - There are no demos for any of the songs on Spirits all are monitor mixes at various stages of the recordings. Not sure where or how you obtained these copies.

I had the priviledge of visiting the Bee Gees producer, Robert Stigwood, in the mid-90's at his house on the Isle Of Wight.

The walls of one room were covered in gold discs....all the Bee Gees.

What a superb group......

I won't ever forget that day.

@honeybabe2007 Personally, I find the BEATLES far more representative " of our planet" - whatever that may mean! than the Bee Gees, although they have a very pleasant sound. Generally, I prefer the older songs myself, such as Massachusetts.

Sounds good anyway. Pretty much same as the record, except with tape hiss and less strings. Sounds like they have either synth strings or one string player and they're electronically chorusing him.

I like the turnaround at 3:58 -- the "aaaahhh" crescendo. It's not lost in a sea of horns like on the record. I like how that sounds.

No, not on the demo, they just made a series of vocal tracks for the complete version, picking their favourite eventually. :)

It sounds the similar, because the vocal track is partially the same in this leaked version as it is on the released recording.

ANSWERS:

Well - not really excess in the sessions - the song was made for a movie - remember? And you ALWAYS want to overdo it - to give the producers/directors several choices to blend song with screen!! And by 1978 they were using 48 track tape systems - so why not?

The coke was probably measured by the shovelfull!

The hiss is becasue of bad or excessivly used tape - the Bee Gees COULD afford the good stuff!

And the record is only the versions that the producers decided to release!

I love this album... Not many people know this but if Robert Stigwood didn't take "Night Fever", "Staying Alive", "How Deep is Your Love" and "If I Can't Have You" for Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack, They would have been featured on Spirits Having Flown, Unreal! Those years of dominance from 75-81 which everything turned to gold. The sad part is the public forgot how brilliant they are and not just for Saturday Night Fever.

Actually no. This is what a Bee Gees demo sounded like.

Their producers have said so in the past. Usually they get rather unfinished stuff by artists before they go on recording a song. Not so the Bee Gees. They came with these pitch perfect Demo tapes giving the producer very little to do aside from pushing a few buttons in the studio. I think you see a bit of an interview about this in "Keple Road".
