  • Yeah, I think it would have been a fine opening sequence, if they would have taken out the lucy jack in the box, and after all those balls jump into the box, that it cut to the heart, and Lucy's face was shown. I think that would have been fine, but the jack in the box part....nuh uh....not liking that(:

  • Well, now that the 5th official season DVD of Lucy Show has finally come out (Dec.2011), the "bouncy ball/jack-in-the-box" opening is included as an extra (bonus) _AND_ for the first ten ep's, in color, and what appears to be 35mm quality! As well as the "Lucy in London" rare one-hour special from that 1966/67 season as well!

I first saw this as a 16mm low-quality BW print on a collector's VHS tape in 1990, and thought the same thing that some have already posted -- the Billy Mumy TZ episode!

  • Hate, hate, hate, this opening. The jack in the box is just plain weird, and the music sounds like a crazy acid trip. It's horrible. She had taste so no wonder she hated it!

  • I'm sure this opening will be included on the season 5 DVD release as an extra, but not actually used as the opening for the episodes.

  • this is the one she really disliked right??

  • @CCLouise33 YES, Lucille Ball reportedly hated this opening sequence - the scene where her head pops out of a jack in the box is just too creepy-

  • A few season 5 episodes had this theme, but, with the kaleidoscope opening. This was due to bad editing.

  • I hope when season 5 is released that we will get to see this opening in color!

  • what an awful opening :/

  • it may be rare and I`m glad i got a chance to see an intro I`ve never seen before, but I agree with Lucy, my first impression of it was it stinks and I`m glad it only survived a few episodes.

  • Well, I don't agree with many here. I really really LOVE this one, and am grateful for its posting, naturally. Out-there and trippy crazy shit, seems a perfect fit for her character- and besides, at the end, we still get the beautiful (albeit requisite) glamour shot to contrast and dispel the aforementioned.

  • I agree with Lucy !

  • pretty weird! Maybe if the 5th season of TLS is released we may have the option to see the episode with this original intro! I like the sproing noise when Lucy pops out, lol. It's so 60s! Why is the video out of sync though? Never used to be.

  • I don't blame Lucy--I would hate this opening, too. Any other opening was good and fitting--not this one.

  • I actually like this opening; it's my second favorite after the third season opening. Of course, if that were my head bobbing at the end of a spring, I might feel differently.

  • the best lucy intro is from heres lucy. love the puppet.

  • Wow i have never seen this, where did you get this? i never knew it existed, thanks for allowing us to view a super-rare piece of history

  • Oh, the wackiness!!!!

  • Anyone care to discuss why full seasons of The Lucy Show haven't come to DVD yet?

  • Well, the official first season of The Lucy Show was just released on DVD by CBS/Paramount this week! And they outdid themselves with this one. It's a fantastic set, put together really well and has great bonus material.

  • hahaha it says 'staring lucille ball' and she pops out the box...fair enough....but THEN it says 'co starring gale gordon'...and you THINK hes guna be in the heart...but NO its lucy again

  • Hahahahahaha I never noticed that! That's great...and very Lucy

  • This is why I like You Tube because of the different things that show up. Although it was a strange introduction, this shows just another bit of TV (Lucy) heritage that fans enjoy, including me. I have heard the music before, once, used the episode where Lucy buts new furniture because a bean company has a double your money back offer if you don't like their product. I haven't seen the visual introduction though. Anyway, thanks for your submission.

  • this is no doubt the STRANGEST intro produced for any of her shows

  • Yeah, I agree no wonder she hated it so much, the kaliedoscope opening is to this day one of my favorites.

  • Lucy was right. Remember the Twilight Zone where Billy Mumy turned people into jack-in-the-boxes before wishing them into the cornfield?

  • I was just thinking of Twllight Zone episode too! The kaleidoscope opening was wacky (Lucy's attempt at psychadellia), but this jack-in-the-box thing was just plain FREAKY! I used to love to watch "The Lucy Show" when I was a kid, when it first aired on CBS, but I think if I'd seen this, I'd have had nightmares for a week!

  • Lucy was a drunk, it's obvious she didn't like it because being intoxicated all the time, that opening was hard for her to look at.

  • Lucy liked her scotch, no doubt. But according to her family and friends, she was no drunk; she cared too much about being in control and in charge to allow anything (like alcohol) or anyone to control her.

  • I know Lucy's the consumate TV clown but that bit with her grimacing face on her decapitated head popping out on a spring like a Jack-in-the-box? UGH! No wonder she dumped it in no time flat.

  • And one more thing to add . . . the "sproingy" noise and her face popping out of the box was kinda scary, but I liked that opening

  • Where did you find this? Do they air TLS with original opening themes in your state? I mean *original?*

  • The 16 mm prints used in broadcast syndication in the 70s and 80s used almost all of the original openings - except for this one, which was even removed from network reruns. This one was shown at a fan event some years ago.

  • When the aired in syndication in the early 1990s, the first two shows from the 1966-67 season had the normal kaleidescope opening, but the music bed was from the original titles (one of the shows was the one starring George Burns, but the version on YouTube does not have the mismatched music bed).

  • I recall reading about this Lucy Show opening from a Lucy biographer's book. Ball was vain. The unflattering

jack-in-the-box of her head is beyond whacky. She settled for soft focused head shots of her lined face.

Lucille Ball's makeup was uniquely applied. The eye brows were raised and unnatural. Under her wig was a device to pull her sagging face up.

  • It was not so much about vanity, but career survival. Like any other Hollywood leading lady, she would go out her way to look as young as she could, such as with the skin-tightening bandages under her wig. But she ONLY did these things when the camera was rolling. Otherwise, people were often shocked by her somewhat neglectful appearance. Typically, she would not even wear makeup and would be in comfortable, but unflattering clothes. And looked much older than when on TV.

  • Wow I don't remember this opening at all

  • Yep, THIS is the one I haven't seen in years. I can understand WHY Lucy didn't like her face popping out of a "jack-in-the-box", and had this opening scotched a few weeks into the 1966-'67 season. Too bad... Roy Rowan's "Brought to you by..." is also missing at the end of this title.
