I'm in HS and just starting out with weight training. Why is this better than using handweights? Is it how you use your wrist or because its faster to grab it?
@Ramubay There are many advantages to the shape of the kettlebell. They way it rests on your forearms and how you use your wrists are a part of it. It lends itself to an almost infinite variety of exercises. Dumbbells start to become awkward when you move up in weight and reps, which can lead to injury.
As a professional you can't just take everything someone says as absolute.... Study it, ponder it, try it, throw it way, the create your own. In my opinion that's the only way, but even that's up for debate.
Usually, you have to swing the kettlebell up to nose height to count the rep. Gym Jones requires the KB to be higher than the head. Crossfit requires straight above the head. It's your choice, but SOP with KBs is to bring them to head height.
There are lots of different swing styles and variations that emphasize different things. There are many right ways depending on the effect you are going for. Sometimes if you are trying to train heavier, you might want to only go up to chest height just to conserve some energy. If you only have a light kettlebell on hand then you can go all the way up crossfit style. There are also variations in the knee bend and the waste bend. Sport guys tend to bend very little in the knees.
im just wondering how they cud build ur chest doing them excersizes if any1 has experience with kettlebells can u reply and tell me if there any good on ur chest thank u

this guy has horrible form with the kettlebell he needs to take lessons your supposed to pop it up with your hips over your head and then peek your head through the window
This guy is a kettlebell guru. His name is Jeff Martone and if anyone knows what they are doing with a kettlebell, it is him. Post a video with your perfect form before you talk shit. Dumbass...
lmfao... Well put... Don't confuse the need for lessons with differring styles. Some don't always pop the hips "hard" unless the weight requires it. They feel it's a waste of energy. MOST competitors use the fluid style... And SAMBO lifters (Russian martial art) use the bells yet a little differently from that... "When we chose to see things differently, we see different things."
I love taking my kettlebell to the gym I got an 80 lb bell. the big bodybuilder guys at the gym can barely do 2 hand swings and I can do 1 hand alternating flips. love kbells!
. I have Pavel's books and believe me the stuff Vlad was showing was um ... "not in the manual".
But I won't try to describe what he did because I'll just mess up the description and maybe everybody will get a hernia or whatever happens to you when you do kbells "wrong" (sorry I never touch the stuff myself).
Those of you who have ever handed Vlad any "standard" implement of any kind (sword, handcuffs, whatever) and stood back slackjawed to freak out at the ensuing ... thermonuclear ingenuity
Watching that kbell guy's reaction, you could have knocked him over with a feather, his eyes nearly fell out on the mat.
But I won't try to describe the actual motions and um ... "exercises" (?) that Vlad showed with the bells (so casually, like "yeah in the army we used to do THIS (!?!?) and then of course there was always some joker who liked doing THIS (????)... and one time we all got a laugh when I did THIS (!!!!!) ... ") We were all pretty freaked to say the least.
You know, there's just something about Vlad... give him any standard implement and you'll think you are watching some genius from Mars, there's just something unfathomably cool about the stuff he does that we conventional types wouldn't have thought to do in a million years.
Yes the above in fact is true. I remember at one recent event, a certed kbell guy was there talking to me. Vlad wanders in and having a few spare minutes, he says to the kbell instructor "please show me some of your stuff" the guy goes through a few proper but somewhat mechanical looking routines. Vlad then said "can i try" and proceeded to DROP OUR JAWS THROUGH THE frikking FLOOR with all manner of really strange and amazing moves he began to do with it!
You can drop any weight on your foot and break all your toes regardless of what shoes you wear, unless they are steel toe boots. When olympic/kettlebell lifts you should be done with perfectly flat shoes, or barefoot. Like Pavel says, "fast feet are happy feet." Just be conscience of what you are doing. Like I said you can break your foot even if you are wearing shoes.
i would say the weight distribution of the spherical kettlebell is more suited than that of a dumbbell shape to movements which cross and combine different planes of body motion. these movements obviously will engage the muscles in different ways to single-plane-of-motion exercises.
football team I train have heard about bells but coach not convinced theyre better than dumbells and they already have those.what would you tell him given they cost a lot also?
Everyone on the Baltimore Ravens use kettlebells, most mma guys use them, Russian special forces used them. Pretty much badasses became badass by using kettlebells. Tell your coach that.
Question, and please take this respectfully. On the basic swing, which I have done a few times in sets of 10 and 20. I dont feel specific muscle fatigue during the activity nor do I feel particular soreness afterwards. I DO get winded, but most fast tempo exercises will challenge the exerciser aerobically. So am I doing something wrong? Where SHOULD you feel the kettlebell basic swing?
well, you should feel it mainly in your legs and in your back some too. 10 or 20 swings isn't really a lot, and many people do hundreds per workout. I suggest you either up the reps, or get a heavier kettlebell.
Check the "about this video" section on the top right of this page if you want to know where to find some kettlebells, or just for some general information about kb's.
Burpees combined with kettlebells provide an intense workout. This is one variation I'll try.

@Ramubay it's because the center of gravity is outside your grip. That way it costs more energy to stay balanced.

It's a power exercise that teaches you how to explode from the hips, while transfering force to the shoulders.
In regards to throwing height if you're looking to maximize conditioning go ahead and use shorter throws.

According to Pavel and the RKC
"a swing of a kettlebell from between your legs up to your chest level."

DontNeedToKnow84 3 years ago
As the exercise uses so many muscle groups, you won't feel an isolated muscle being worked.
You may feel it in your thighs as you lock out, or in your lower back if it is slightly weak.
great video.
