HDD has bad heads, the loud "fan noise" is the disk spinning up to high RPMs, the clicking/clunky noise is the bad head. it keeps force restarting because the HDD system check fails and the system will not boot unless all system checks pass, i know this is an old video but i'm writing this for anyone else having similar issues with any Mac/PC.
If it's upgraded it might have a fan. Some processor upgrades and graphics cards made it necessary. Otherwise it's a noisy HD. I have an iMac G3 with an insanely noisy HD, once I replaced it the thing was absolutely silent except when using the optical drive.
These unites DO NOT have a fan, so don't say its a fan. It is the hard drive running. Old hard drives get noisier over time, so that is what this sound is.
@02500l - There is no fan, and that's why there is a vent on the bottom and a hole on the top. Apple designed some older macs, such as the Cube and iMac G3 with a convection-based cooling system, so they wouldn't be as noisy. The air goes in on the bottom and rises out through the top vent. I like the feature on my imac g3, as it means less noise.
@c4pt1n54n0 - Nope, you're wrong. The Cube also used a silent, fanless, convection-based cooling system like the iMacs of the time (G3 iMacs). The vent on the top was so hot air rises.
sounds like HDD, get a new cheap IDE drive. that waking noise is normal and its the cd drive, the weird one. but that noise that sounds like a fan but isnt is the HDD. (the cube is fanless, one of the reasons i got mine)
my mac mini used to do the same exact thing... my mom took it to the apple store and it would've cost more to fix than to replace! but man, the cube is so SIIIICK with the cinema display. bummmer.
#LOL time for a new computer. The cube looks sexy and all, but it isn't half the powerhouse it was made out to be, not even when it first came out. Still a sexy machine though. Most likely optical drive or HDD. Unplug the optical drive's power (if you can) and start it up and see if it still makes the same noises. If so, it's the HD failing. Backup and get a new one.
How old is the hard drive?, also keep the cube out n the open so it can ventilate well, I had a problem on my old 40 gb hdd when it got to hot and I needed to replace it. I also had the cube under a hutch on my desk, so the air flow was not good. But I moved it and put in a 120 Gb hdd
you have a disc in your disc drive
