  • Bloody brilliant!!

  • Yorkshire.

  • A happy 100th birthday to the glorious Doreen Brigham, who wrote the beautiful words for the last movement of this work. It was a thrill to be able to set them to music and you are a huge inspiration to Yorkshire folk across the world.

  • thats my mate singine at 12:29

  • absolutely hilarious. camp classic!

  • @AstroPolar I honestly am struggling to fathom how you or anybody else could call this -absolutely hilarious camp classic! Do you live in Yorkshire if not have you ever been ? This video is a fine acheivement and captures all that is good in this wonderful county of ours.

  • How can people not like this???

  • It's hard to find the words to describe this brilliant and inspirational work of art. So, I'll just say THANKS.

  • Wonderful

  • I congratulate Benjamin Till, I first watched and listened to this on the 1st of August and have watched it over and over again; Its brilliant for so many reasons, the music is so varied and inclusive, the scenery includes wild open moorland, urban decay, forests and the coast, I was very suprised to hear the song "Stow brow to bay" included, this is supposedly based on a true story and comes from Robin Hoods Bay, my grandmother used to sing it.

    Absolutely brilliant

  • i saw the program on the bbc when i was on hoilday an im glad i got to see the full song, it truly is lovely and does seem just like i always pictured it in my mind. my dad is for yorkshire and has always told us about it, i'm hoping to go there myself onday.

  • beautiful :')

hmm... seems 10 people are Lancastrians

  • Moved from London to Yorkshire 25 years ago. I had no idea then that a place could be held so preciously in the heart. This piece is a moving tribute to Yorkshire as I know it: tradition and variety, beauty and grit hand-in-hand.

  • @dravidwake I think you may have got it all wrong! Dont tar all of us with the same brush

  • Something for us Yorkshire people to be proud of

  • I am very proud to say I am an amateur musician who took part in this, so to all those who have written lovely comments about the end result and/or the beauty of Yorkshire, thank you. Auditioning was nerve wracking, and arranging studio recording and filming for everyone involved must have been a nightmare for the people who organised everything. The few who choose to criticise this work, well that's your right, but it's a shame you haven't GOT what this was really all about.

  • @boyleover I know for one what it really IS about . And its not what it says in the title.

  • I used to go to Saturday Morning pictures at th Hyde Park Picture House.

  • 2nd I thought i'd set up an account. i've been reading the comments on here that some people don't like the rap part, the smoking bit and basically commented on anything but the the music itself. which is quite usual for you people because your mind goes yorkshire and rap.

  • Hi i'm the 1st rapper in the video my name is richard or my dj/mc/rap and producer name is AUDIO FUNKTION. I write all my lyrics perform them make my own records i do all this my self this symphony was a big oppurunity and i'm proud of it.

  • It's indeed a great piece of work. Although as a foreigner I have never been to Yorkshire, after watching this video I told myself I will definitely travel to UK again, to Yorkshire. and I have watched this video for more than 10 times. I love it very much!

  • An amazing piece of work. Always a pleasure to work with such a talented composer, please carry on Ben!

  • Benjamin Till yes well done and all .... but what a gorgeous talented conductor! mnnn

  • Well, I understand from previous posts that Benjamin Till suggested the piece to the BBC, rather than the BBC commissioning him. If a Yorkshire composer/director had come forward with the idea then they could have directed it!

  • Gorgeousmerry, I agree, Yorkshire IS beautiful and the piece is not without it merits BUT I still feel there is untapped talent in Yorkshire the BBC could have found without too much difficulty to compose and make this. Benjamin Till will stay in work but I believe we're left with a piece of music that will not be of much use to Yorkshire, will not ever be recorded again and didn't promote Yorkshire composers or directors (who surely exist)

  • @BurtIsitart, If it is true that you are following Benjamin Till around and dissing his work, I somehow might feel that you are a disgruntled person not having been included in some earlier piece of his?! If you actually seriously listen to the music I am sure there will be something for you in there, if you are the sort of person that does not like any kind of music, then please get a life and go and do something you actually enjoy and leave music to all us music lovers.

  • @BurtIsitart Are you not reading or listening, or comprehending? The musicians of Yorkshire who were interested in playing in the Symphony went to Jonathan Till to audition for a part. Every musician in Yorkshire had the will to audition for a part if they wanted to. The fact is your arguments are nonsensical. The Symphony for Yorkshire does not need to be re-scored, it has been done as a one off special Symphony to be used as a celebration of Yorkshire Day every year.

  • Loved it for its celebration of al that makes up Yorkshire. I wish that Annie Hinchliffes

Yorkshire Day Anthem composed and written in 1992 and played at the Yorkshire Society's Yorkshire Day Service every year since, could have been included somehow. It too is a celebration in simple words and a music of our beloved Yorkshire. Both pieces will live a long time.

  • Burtlsitart..what a strange fellow. He pops up everywhere Benjamin Tills work does. His work never pops up tho. Constant critisism of a project that seems to have brought joy to a lot of people. A project comprsising of hundreds of yorkshire musicians of all race, religious and social backgrounds, coming together to celebrate Yorkshire. And THIS guy keeps going on about Coventry Market. If you don't like Ben Till's work, stop listening to it! Are you mental? Where is your symphony for me to hear?

  • What a shame to read so many gripes about a project that involved hundreds of performers, celebrated a beautiful county and created a piece of music that WILL live on. I am sure it could be scored so it could be performed by various groups around the UK and hope it is. Well done to the BBC, to Benjamin Till and to all the performers. I loved this. Meriel (lived in Yorkshire for 4 years and was very happy there).

  • @gorgeousmerry Here here!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It seems some of you are getting quite confused about how this Symphony was created and how BBC commissioning works: The Symphony for Yorkshire was Ben Till's original idea - this was then taken to the BBC - the BBC commissioned it to be made and filmed by Ben Till on strength of the idea and his skills and experience. So of course Ben Till would compose and direct this particular work. Remember it is his idea and creation, not a BBC idea looking for a composer ...

  • It seems Benjamin Till's next job is doing something similar to this to celebrate Newcastle Metro's 30th anniversary. I'm torn between applauding his ability to keep himself in work and wondering why the people who offer him contracts can't find the talent locally. There are no angles in this film we haven't seen on Look North over the years so we're left with the music poor Benjamin has to compose for whatever talent comes through his audition rooms' doors. If there's a masochist gene ...

  • Has this been reviewed anywhere?

  • @BurtIsitart Has this been reviewed anywhere? Are you trying to find other critical opinion that agrees with yours?

  • I'm not sure this is a "symphony" and agree with the comments suggesting it's unlikely to be performed by anyone else apart from those featured in the film which makes it already a bit redundant. The words by the old lady at the end are good but when a piece has to accommodate so many differing musicians, standards of ability, styles and so on, it HAS to be written around whoever is playing it which is pretty restricting. It will be quite forgotten quite soon.

  • If Yorkshire had anyone capable of doing anything as brilliant as this, they wouldn't have had to go outside of the county to get the necessary composition and directing skills. I'm sure the BBC would have loved to have hired someone local but obviously the skills just don't exist in Yorkshire.

  • A proper "symphony" has it's score duplicated so it can be performed by orchestras and is arranged for brass bands, string quartets and so on. When does the score for this become available?

  • Yorkshire is epic, don't try and argue.

You're all just jealous you can't actually produce something beautiful, diverse and magnificent.

    So fuck off yeh?

  • Circus Envy were only involved in the third movement, but yeah I hear a bit of that in there too.

  • Wow. I'm from Sheffield and I gotta say that this is a nice piece of music.

  • Oh and before the comments start, I'm from Doncaster originally, now live in Hull, which is part of the East Riding of Yorkshire. And with regards to the composer, it was always clear that he made sure this project was about the people of Yorkshire, not about him. However, you might be interested to find that he learnt and studied his craft in Yorkshire.

  • A a member of one of the acts involved in the project, I can confirm that much time and effort went into this. The whole point of this was to celebrate the people, culture and landscape of Yorkshire, creating a musical piece inspired by all the above - which is exactly what was achieved. Open auditions were held, so the final result is from the Yorkshire acts that were seen and naturally, there was a wide range of musical ability. Disappointing to see bigoted comments here, but not surprised.

  • @LeighHirstCE I think it's wonderful, and I particularly love the second movement.

To me that part seems to have Irish echoes?

  • I'm sure Benjamin Till is equally "passionate" about Coventry Market, Watford Gap, The A1, Buskers, Samuel Pepys, the church bells of London. Don't take my word for it. Go and look on the internet. You'll find him being "passionate" about "everything". Doesn't it bother you there might be an undiscovered gem of a composer in Yorkshire that could have written this?

  • Comment removed

  • Hilarious. This IS a joke isn't it? Is it a Chris Morris gag? I hope I'm not offending anyone but if you can't buy the sheet music for all the parts, is it a symphony? I can imagine why Chris Morris picked the biggest, proudest county in the UK. So funny. LMAO. Genius. Sooo funny.

  • Not impressed with camera angles at the beginning. Camera pans down, moves left, centres, moves left? Looks like they're correcting for wrong positioning from the start.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to achieve. If you can't compose something musically valid because it may be too difficult for the people who might actually be playing it, aren't you just condemned to producing something not much better than a grade 4 exam piece?

Sorry. This work has little credibility. Nice county!

  • @Reisepute So you are not impressed with the camera angles? Yawn. You might be better employed picking fluff from your belly button than these condescending and nit-picking comments....

  • If Benjamin Till wasn't more talented than anyone Yorkshire could muster, why was he hired to compose "A Symphony For Yorkshire"? I don't know why he bothered coming north if this is all the thanks he gets.

  • croziers what a complete tit you are! health and safety? smoking? yorkshire descent? unintelligble chunter? get with the times mate, before they leave you behind. you sound like a grumpy racist old codger.

Yorkshire is a multi cultural place with music being made in a diverse range of styles!

and anyhow, everyone knows 'health and safety' laws area load of rubbish

  • @croziers There's no such county as Humberside - it ceased to exist in 1996. Spurn Point is in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Are you a BBC approved safety officer? Where are the health and safety violations, I'm interested to know.

  • In the meantime I have watched the complete video several times The smoker is obviously in a slum stairwell, I thought smoking in public buildings was illegal in the UK?

I still consider "rap" to be unintelligible chunter.

Spurn Point I thought is in Humberside rather than Yorkshire?

Many scenes are in clear breach of health and safety but ethnic minority quotas have been met and that is all the BBC seems to be interested in.

Oh yes, I was born and bred in Yorkshire!

  • I haven't been this moved since My Lovely Horse.

  • I have to say that I was very impressed by the final results of this film, and am proud to have been a part of it (with the Yorkshire Sax Choir). It shows the great musical diversity of the people of Yorkshire very well, and manages to integrate them wonderfully. The video also makes me proud to live in such a beautiful county!

My only gripe (as a performer) is that we recorded 3 clips of audio, but only one is in the final mix, and the video doesn't show us well.

    Fab work Benjamin!

  • i thought that was an exalent piece, it showed the beauty of yorkshire and the prid of it's people, and also the diversity of those people. it makes me proud to be from yorkshire and it makes me proud of the heritage that everyone in yorkshire shares.

the only part that disapointed me was the rap between 08.00 to 08.13

  • Ok, I am a Bradford lad born and bred. This didn't show nearly enough of the landscape and city for me. If you are going to promote a County with a rich history like Yorkshire's then at least don't ram the artists down our throats. It was constantly annoying to me to see Yorkshire obscured by these talented folk. Why on Earth would I want to SEE a musician?

The music was ok, but when I think of pieces such as Jerusalem and others then I realize just how uninspiring this collection is.

  • Croziers, can you tell me which are the "foreign" musicians??

  • Born in Yorkshire of Yorkshire descent!

  • Crozier, pray tell me... what is a REAL Yorkshire musician?

  • When I saw the cigarette at the 8 minute point I stopped recording and deleted everything. Never mind the foreign musicians, promoting a filthy habit like smoking is a disgrace.

What a shame you couldn't find REAL Yorkshire musicians. I understand there is also some "Rap" rubbish later on in the video.

  • @croziers you "understand" there is some "rap rubbish" - does that mean you haven't listened to it before making up your mind. Says a lot about your opinions doesn't it?

  • Well put together , Knocks the spots off of Watford gap & Coventry market. Luv It.

  • Well, this did me a lot of good. Love it. K.

  • very good video well worth watching

  • @katasaifa

It's not about political correctness at all. I also loved this wonderful symphony. It is my right as a free Yorkshireman to express my viewpoint without being castigated by someone who hasn't even met me. The Asian community in Yorkshire is large and strong. I would also like to inform you that Benjamin Till himself wanted to reflect Asian culture more obviously in the symphony as he kindly informed me by e-mail but sadly suitable response to the original advert didn't happen.

  • Does anyone else get goosebumps on hearing the march down the streets. Makes you proud to be yorkshirian???

  • @Cheeseball1066 it makes me proud to, there is nothing like the feeling of patriotism for the land in which you are born

  • Lovely reminds me of home , love the moors at the end , the last movement is my favourite it is what yorkshire is all about ... The harp player you mentioned is

    Fiona-Katie Roberts

  • Great !!! The harp player at the end is lovely and gives the symphony atmosphere I was lucky enough to see her play live last year Well done to all

  • A wonderful tribute to this great county of ours that we all love.Thank you and well done to all who took part .

  • Lauren Proudlock and Charlotte Albaya, 6 minutes 17 seconds in.

  • A fantastic effort and achievement by everybody who took part in the recording and filming and shows a wide range of musical skills and abilities.

If everyone was perfect then life be dull and boring! Well done to everyone.

To those who feel they must complain, poke fun and sneer at the people who took part, my only question to you is... where were you when people were asked to part??

  • As a Yorkshireman, now in France, I love this, and it makes me want to return to our Great County. Those egmatic words from Doreen, in the 4th Movement, sent a shiver down my spine.

  • I love this symphony for the famous broad acres of my beloved Yorkshire. Perhaps I missed it but I would have liked the symphony to include an element or phase that clearly acknowledged and celebrated the cultures of Yorkshire people of Asian descent - some bangla perhaps. Then it would have been quite perfect.

  • lmao @ 9:47

  • The rapper you talk about was a joy to work with, and probably one of the most professional people we had in the recording studio. I think he did a grand job. The person who created the issues in the studio doesn't actually feature in the film because she didn't show up to the filming. We waited for her, called her... nothing. A real shame, because we turned down many talented singers to give her the chance.

  • @Benjamintill It's a shame you didn't turn down the other 70% of people on the video that could barely sing!.. Did you have auditions?

The music was very professional and excellentlly put together.

I think we should leave rap to the Americans because it sounds dreadful by southerners and embarrassing by Yorkshiremen!!

    CRINGE!!

Well done though. Nice to watch.

  • 14:30 lol

  • which is the nob head who was a nightmare to record?

  • @wiivamphomebrew I thinks it's the kid who tries to rap!

  • Is it my imagination (because I'm Irish), or does the second movement seem to have a rather Irish theme? It reminds me of my beautiful niece, Catherine, who lived in Leeds for a time and whom I visited there 20 years ago, and who died last year at the age of 46...

  • Brilliant, so many memories come flooding back, not the least of which was hide and seek in the bin yards and toilet yards of the terraces, just like the ones with the lady hanging washing across. The view down Haworth main street, how many wonderful family days out there! Send it to every ex-pat Yorkshire person you know, I promise it will make their day!

  • 6 mins 34 just moves me dont know why

  • @birstallglenn because of an unexpected modulation to a well chosen minor key.

  • second movement the best

  • @birstallglenn Yes, I agree with you for reasons stated below...

  • just awesome

  • really feeling the yorkshire pride right now

  • 1:00 - 7:59 - Great

    8.00 - rest - Oh dear.

  • Very nice......

  • Enjoyed it all, but Doreen's words to the tune in the 4th Movement were extra special and will become the Yorkshire Anthem.

  • I liked the man playing the saw and the rock volin guy the best, but i didn't like the rapping, it could have done without that!

  • As a Yorkshire lass born and bred I just want to say what a brilliant way to celebrate Yorkshire Day, well done to all those who took part. I'm proud to come from Yorkshire but even I was surprised at the lump this brought to my throat, fantastic!

I am Proud to call Yorkshire my HOME.

  • Que pasó ahí? parece que unos colombianos andan perdidos en un pueblito Inglés jeje. Felicidades y que gusto que representen a nosotros los latinos :).

    Ignacio (México)

  • To fuse together so many different musical styles into a cohesive, beautiful and moving elegy to Yorkshire is extraordinary enough. To then film it on such a grand scale (and I'm guessing on a tiny budget) represents a breathtaking achievement. The composer Ben Till has my huge respect and admiration, as does the production team behind it and all who took part.

What next - a Symphony for Great Britain?

  • "A Symphony For Great Britain", what a great idea! I don't know who could do it better than Benjamin.

  • @tanyadawnify If Symphony for Great Britain is next on the cards then count me in. I watched his Tyne & Wear Metro musical and was gutted I wasn't involved. I am new to Ben's work but I'm with the ones who are saying "nice work". I liked the way so many diverse cultures were also represented in the Yorkshire symphony. Not sure what the language was they used at the start but it seemed to really fit very well. If this musical were being sold on Ebay, I'd give it the A++

  • Emmaaaaa!! You rock missus!!!

  • woo I'm in this and absolutely love it!

    x

  • very nice

  • Felicidades al tromps!!!! Fue una oportunidad excelente y qué bueno que pudiste tocar ahí !!! :D:D:D:D

  • 9.14 - 10.11! Luva Gunk! Ha

  • Absolutely incredible. I could listen to this and watch it time and time again. Well done everybody.

  • Well done Benjamin.

A fantastic mix of characters...proof that all ages and cultures can work together and produce some brilliant work.

There are some really talented people in this country, if only they get the chance to shine...and you do seem to have the ability to open those doors.

  • Awesome!

  • amazing !! what an eclectic mix showing yorkshire , and its folk at their best !!

  • eh should of been death metal. death metal for the win.

  • Made me homesick for the first time in years. Colin in Auckland, NZ.

  • And many thanks to all the wonderful people who helped to make this film so special

  • real glad and proud to live in yorkshire andy from maltby rotherham

  • Beautiful. It made me cry with happiness. I realise once again how beautiful Yorkshire is, from the streets of Hillsborough to the picturesque Abbeys and moors. Benjamin has a knack for being able to create something very special in his work. He unites diverse communities, boosts confidence & makes people feel proud & positive about their lives. Just look at all their faces, being part of this is special. Nevermind the BBC, Benjamin should be available on the NHS.

  • Dont this make the hairs stand up on the back of you head with pride.

    well done to all concerned.

    Roger :Sunny Sheffield

  • Inspirational, and very moving. Bit of a tear to the eye moment at the end. Congrats to all involved.

  • I really enjoyed taking part in this and am chuffed to little mint balls with the results. Good to see Shepherd Group Brass Band there.

  • Beautiful, simply beautiful. I just loved it, especially the final movement. Very Touching. It really speaks, not just to the talent of Yorkshire, but to the talent that can be found in all of us it we are just given the chance to shine. I loved it.

  • This video is really cool!!!! and my violin teacher's in it :-)))))

  • Flying a big White Rose up here in Scotland!!!

  • Im proud to be yorkshire!

  • rabbitspliff - when you have going on for 300 performers, from people with very little musical skill to professional musicians like myself, it's going to be a compromise in terms of the music.

Benjamin Till (the composer) has done a remarkable job bringing it all together, and the camera crew have produced a fantastic film!

Btw...I'm the guy playing the carillon at York Minster in the 2nd and 4th movements:-))

  • loved the video, great locations. music's a bit too wacky and all over the place for my tastes though.

  • '‎So when I've done my roaming. And when my step grows slow. When heart and mind assure me that will soon be time to go. Then let me rest in Yorkshire. For it's there I want to lie.'

  • @damezon Has to be the most moving part of the symphony. Beautiful.

  • Awesome =D
