Regulation, limitation, government mandate. The seeds of this economy were sown during the Clinton administration when banks were forced to give loans to high-risk individuals under threat of fines and prosecution. Laissez Faire works. Mixed economies do not.
If there were to be a new direction in Republican policy now, and this speech was to be one of the first indicators of it, it would be fitting that it took place in Virginia. Virginia was arguably the center of revolutionary thought and action during the original American Revolution. Would be great for it to repeat it's history in that sense.
Dr. Brook is talking about the current economic crisis. It started with the collapse of the GSE's Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac. The Community Reinvestment Act was a policy put forth by the Clinton Admin. which required mortgage companies to sell a certain percentage of their loans to low-income individuals. This economic crisis is very complicated, but can be understood by referring numerous articles by Peter Wallison, who predicted the crisis in 1999.
If only we hadnt gotten past the point where we could make a difference at the ballot box.there are already too many people dependent on the government (in one fashion or another; welfare, their job, grants, etc.) and they will continue to vote in whichever party caters to them with promises of taking care of them cradle to grave. Individualism wont have a chance anymore unless something drastically changes.
In one of the letters between Jefferson and Adams: "a man not only has Rights to Property..he also may be said to have property to his Rights."
further-" We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal...endowed with certain INALIENABLE rights...Life,Liberty, pursuit of happiness...that whenever any form of govt. becomes DESTRUCTIVE OF THESE ENDS, IT IS THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO ALTER OR ABOLISH IT (emphasis added;Thom. Jefferson, Declaration of independence-1776)
cont'd.-Prudence Dictates.. govt long established should not be changed for light and transient causes..experience has shown mankind..more disposed to suffer... than to right themselves by abolishing forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object(IE-PROGRESSIVISM/STATISM/ETC) envinces a design to reduce them to...despotism, IT IS THEIR RIGHT, THEIR DUTY TO THROW OFF SUCH GOVT AND TO PROVIDE NEW GUARDS TO THEIR ..SECURITY.
I think our best chance is to "throw them off" intellectually. I'm wondering if our best bet is to win over the next generation of kids (the existing generations are woefully uneducated thanks to progressive education). I'm wondering if something like the Van Damme academy is more crucial than the Ayn Rand Center/Institute (if the schools could be made a few thousand times more prolific). That way we won't save today but we will save ourselves thirty years down the line.
Absolutely. Plus, information you share publicly about places like Van Damme, becomes known to many...who share that with many...who share that with many.
Spreading these ideas and facts by word of mouth is crucial.
We are fighting a war that spans time -- a temporal war. THEY had their clutches on several generations. It's OUR turn, NOW, to tell the whole truth and use Reason for the future.
Word of mouth. The internet. Social networking. Individual-to-individual communication.
They control most of the media. Although it has gotten better with libertarian TYPES like judge Napolitano, Beck, Dobbs, John Stossel, etc. Even with their mass marketing, the majority of Americans STILL haven't caught on to these ideas.
My GUESS is the extreme psychological hold that taboos have, peer pressure, conformity, etc. have on most people squashes dissent from within our own heads.
Maybe one of the most powerful Speech fo Dr. Yaron!
Everything is there - listen and act! I lived in UK and had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Yaron in London. What a great mind! But the essence of his philosophy is for me the MASTER: AYN RAND!!!
Her vision was so strong and quite impressive at her time; but right now, she has been vindicated and she was/is a bright and very smart 'brain'.
After Ayn Rand, what do you want to know more in life??? NOTHING BUT FREEDOM AND INDIVIDUAL RIGHT!
I don't have the quote to hand but i'm pretty sure that the context is one that makes clear that that statement holds true only when the philosophical differences are ignored or left unstated. In this speech Yaron Brook has in no way neglected to emphasise the philosophical differences, in fact the whole speech is an exposition of Objectivist philosophy and an urge to republicans to take it up.
But he's not collaborating with the Republicans. I mean, seriously, he's giving them a freaking lecture like they're little kids who made a boo-boo or something. I love it.
CommodoreV: I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I know the sentence and it's meaning. And at least you have it wrong in your message. It's supposed to be: In any collaboration between men who hold THE SAME basic principle, it's the more evil / irrational one that ultimately wins.
The justification for the sentence is clear: By siding with evil, it's only evil that benefits. The good has nothing to gain from cooperating with evil. Evil has nothing to offer to the good.
Here we have a man beating up on the Republican Party and getting a standing ovation from the folks he just beat up. Amazing.

What about Norway and Finland. They are highly socialized and they prosper.
jche7793 2 years ago
Norway had capitalism for a very long time, and got very wealthy. under its new system, it has just about treaded water.
the socialism hasn't created the wealth.
richardcadbury 2 years ago 15
No we never had capitalism (I'm Norwegian). We steal money by taxing our oil companies, that's why our government has so much money.
+ schools, hospitals, health care etc etc is way worse than in the U.S where it's at least sometimes privately owned.

What does Brook say at 1:35? I hear "...Community Re-Investment Act, and Freddie and Fannie, and _______." Anybody able to understand this?

Drowned out by the applause.

No I know what he's talking about, and what the CRIA is, I just couldn't understand what he said after "Freddie and Fannie" because of the applause.

CommodoreV: I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I know the sentence and it's meaning. And at least you have it wrong in your message. It's supposed to be: In any collaboration between men who hold THE SAME basic principle, it's the more evil / irrational one that ultimately wins.

Oh, yes. I was certainly wrong about my application of that quote.
The quote was:
"In any collaboration between two men (or two groups) who hold different basic principles, it is the more evil or irrational one who wins."
Yaron Brook was in no way cooperating with the Republicans, it was more of a reprimand.
