@unweonllamadodau Then either Takara or Hasbro used the mold for Jetfire. This led to a lawsuit, so they changed the animated model and that's how we ended up with Skyfire.
Here's what I want to know. I pretty much grew up watching this show. However, everywhere I look on the Internet says that this show came out in 1985. Can anyone explain to me how I was watching it in 1983?
I wrote a story in third grade based on some of the characters and plots from Robotech. I was in third grade from 1982 to 1983.
@apbentertainment Wow, you must be delusional. Till this day, Robotech is still reliant on Kawamori's 1982 "SDF-Macross," which is nearly 30 years old! HG had their chance to prove themselves that they can produce an anime w/o "Macross," and they failed epically with their "Robotech:Shadow Chronicles." Hell, they couldn't even upgrade the mechas after 30+ years, which is pretty sad! Macross's latest 2011 movie, "Wings of Goodbye" pretty much sent a barrage of missiles right up Robotech's ass!
@808jspekeg6 im not delusional its the truth. Ive watched both and I prefer robotech. I love the Robotech Masters and the Invid also. No offense to Macross but this is Robotech all the way!!!
@apbentertainment i just rented SDF Macross and i have to say Robotech is better, the voice actors are better, they dont scream out of the top of there lungs all the damn time. and plus i dont see what people are crying and saying Robotech sucks ass. if you say Robotech sucks ass that means you must hate Macross because both are THE SAME! a lot of the lines are the same just in different words.
Narato, Bleach, Death Note, anything new = noob-shit.
Robotech = Pro-Shit
i wish they'd air this again! Like at least Macross, cause i totally miss this show! sad thing is it took the PS2 game to make me realize how much i miss it.
the macross opening sounds so sad, really is not a as powerfull as the robotech one, as a kid then, I prefer this one for the great use of instrumentation. thanks Ulpio Menucci.
Carl Macek died 04.17.2010. He was a pretty decent man who did much to popularize japanese animation in US (and retroactively, in many western countries like France where they bought the US Robotech version of Macross).
I liked his work and liked Robotech. Even if I admit it was a pretty weird Frankenstein, still it worked. It was a desperate, epic tale. The only thing I regret is the original songs which happen to be much better than the english ones. The Robotech opening is awesome.
Why the hell did they change this? They should've kept the original opening for all 3 series instead of making one for each series. The original incorporated the whole series. This one suck because this was not what I grew up with.
Music is fine, so is the voice acting, and I don't even care about the name changes. The only bad thing about the robotech version is the small story/dialog changes that don't even make any sense.
This music is much better than the Macross original opening song that had no emotion and energy, this song is better to an epic and action series. And this opening is better than the combinated generations opening that was a rare popurri. Incredible

Although when I say "Robotech" I think primarly of the "Macross saga", I think that the original intro with "Southern Cross" and "Mospeada" footage looks better.
they shoulda kept the original tune , but had a english singer, kinda like what they did with gundam 0083....the americanized version of stardust memory's opening wasn't bad imo
It's official. I'm gonna watch Robotech over Netflix Instant Streaming (ON THE WII) while I wait for Netflix to fix the damn order on the Gurren Lagann episodes.
Also, yes I love Robotech, yes I love old anime, and yes that "age: 16" piece on my profile is not a typo.
@CCharmanderK Also, yes, I am watching both SDF Macross and Robotech near-simultaneously. I'll be checking out Mospeada and Southern Cross in due time alongside their respective Robotech adaptations.
To all the haters: Macross wasn't on American TV when I was kid. This was. It was groundbreaking for us and nothing in cartoons since has ever been on American TV. I wonder how many of you are under 25 and too young to judge this series fairly? Probably the same kids who think 1977 Star Wars looks "cheesy". We adults who were kids who raced home every day to watch this, are happy to see it again. Let us re-enjoy our childhood and keep the negative, geek-elitist shit to yourself.
@yakfitguy "We adults who were kids who raced home every day to watch this..." - That just brings back so many memories. There a so many of us who shared the same sentiments for this show way back when. Yep, let us all re-enjoy our childhood again indeed.
Great and probably best opening of an anime television series ever. I followed the whole first season of Ricks adventures of the original series. Damn, it was so good! Character development, music, tech, brings back many sunday memories when my brother and I were watching this in our pyamas while mother was nagging us to get some food in our open mouths for we were so much engaged in Robotech, how the crafts were transforming
I watched this when I was in high school. Love to watch all the episodes until it ended. It was mind boggling. So, 009FGH, go flush your head down the toilet.
I'll admit, I liked Robotech. Then I picked up a Battletech novel called "Wolves on the Border"...and well...that was the end of my Robotech addiction.
Battletech/Mechwarrior had better storylines (except for the Jade Falcon shit written by Thurston).
I just heard Carl Macek passed away, he was just doing a podcast a month agoe...say what you want about him, he got a huge wave of fans into anime, even in recent years with his work on Naruto and Bleach, So rock on Robotech! You may not of been perfect but you gave us the fans we never thought we'd get.
I was to young to grow up with robotech, so naturally I saw the original Macross instead, I understand besides names and protoculture The first Robotech saga and Macross are identicle, so whats with all the fanboy rivalrey? also I hate to admit it but the more I watch this opening the more I like it better, and I fucking love the original song
I think it's just because Robotech keeps Macross from getting localized. Not "The Super Dimenstion Fortress Macross" (that's what Robotech pretty much is) but stuff like Macross Zero and Macross Frontier get blocked out.
TBQH, Robotech itself is nothing to hate. The problem is that the company behind it is the hated one, and naturally the hate spreads. Robotech just ended up getting snared by association.
Indeed. As I have said countless times I have no problem with Robotech. Heck I enjoy it and prefer Macross though. Heck even the novels are good because they escape the obvious visual constraints of tying the stories together. You're probably right in that however going by what you're saying though a lot of peopel still seem to slag off Robotech in General
@Vnewbie Really Can someone also help me answer this: When peopel continually slag off Robotech why is it they are only referring to the Macross Saga and not Southern Cross or Mospeda? Half the time the fanboys only mention the First Series and not Mospeda or Southern cross. Really their arguements hold no weight
@slyther2 I don't know about Mospeada, but I know that Southern Cross was considered by many to be terrible, to the point where many think that the Robotech The Masters was an improvement over Southern Cross.
But really, it's just a whole bunch of legal issues that prevents HG from bringing over most of the other Macross series, yet other companies that try to get sued by HG for using the Macross name, which they trademarked (or copyrighted, don't know the correct term) in America.
Epic! i hope to see a Robotech movie soon, the story is great and very interesting. The Fighters are cool, a bit 80s i have to say, but the 3 transformations are so clever. Love it.
@TeamNemesiz Tobey Maquire (Spider-Man) is the one you want to talk to. He IS actually trying to make a live action ROBOTECH movie. Harmony Gold is being a pain about it though, or so it seems.
I wish they had a better team of writers for sentinels...but it was awful. Robotech the original series is far superior. Also, the generations stand better as independent shows rather than getting linked because of massive gaps in story line. Really poor links. I love all the characters, their mecha, and their universe. I wish a talented writer developed the story line further rather than hacks.
@FeedbackMonitor I disagree. I think the story gaps are forgivable when you weigh in the improvements made to the second and third series in addition to the phenomenal us voice cast. Greg Snegoff's Khyron is one of the greatest tv villains of all time
Okay I gotta know, I am planning on buying a Robotech dvd set but I can't decide between the protoculture set, or the remastered, either way I have an upconversion 1080p dvd player but I still want the best looking dvd set possible. Any help would be appreciated!!!
Exia wouldnt stand a chance against a late-Model Valkryie, a slow, melee based mobile suit would get raped by an ultra-high performance model like a VF-27 Lucifer or VF-1MS Metal Siren.
Well, that may be so with Exia's single engine but with the Raiser system and amped by the trans-am drive, all bets are off and that would be one hell of a fight.
They actually took the original macross opening and changed the music and added sound effects. bravo, the old robotech opening was awful, stick to the original Japanese one and make it more epic... lol
@Luminahawke why? this ones fits sooo much better, oh wait its japanese? oh well that changes EVERYTHING because japan is god and us meer american mortals shall not dare change the holy art of...guuh seriusly?
@khayal101 Not exactly, the original Robotech opening had clips from multipal different Japanese anime series which all clashed with eachother, they should of had a different opening credits for each saga. The sound effects in this version of the opening sadly clash with the music too much. xD
maybe just because this one sucks insane ass?!? its about the most boring opening ever. it sounds like a victory song for an RPG. a very very lame one :P
and yeah, america kinda is fully stupid in a tremendous amount of ways, but that has little to do with this matter :P
not really...Veritechs don't really exist but lets overlook that. Gundam armour is really strong (except RX78and EZ)They lack the mobility of veritechs but have power and endurance.HOWEVER In Macross Frontier the VALKYRIES had dimension eater Missiles that could decimate a Gundam.Any Gundam.Anything from robotech is old and outdated. They wouldn't stand a chance.
I personally thought the ability for a Veritech to switch between the different forms could help the pilot adapt to a situation and have the agility to dodge incoming fire from the Gundams.
You really 1-upped me there, great show! *gives round of applause*
not trying to 1up I just love Valkyries and Gundams. The best Valkyries are VF25Messiah VF27Lucifer and VF171 Nightmare. The YF19Excalibur andYF21 .They can hold their own aganist some Gundams however some Gundams can defeat these Valkyries so I see it as a tie.The VF series on the first Macross show could take Rx78 but against Zeta and Nu they'd run in to problems. Some battles between MS and VFs would end with all ammo spent because of the armour/manuverablilty of both Mechs.
@sonickid101 let me rephrase that.Gundams who aren't Godlike. So lets exclude Turn A and All the G Gundams. And stick to realistic Gundams. Like Zephyranthes,Exia and the others :)
I remember watching this show on PBS when I was 10.I liked it so much I bought the Protoculture Collection about a year ago. It came with the Marcross Saga, Masters, and New Generation.Plus seven disks of extras.
I remember watc hing Robotech when it came back on Toonami during the 90s. It wasn't big thing for the program. Everyone were more focused on DBZ, Sailor Moon or Outlaw Star.
Well I remember it enough to buy Macross, the original show each the first arc is based off of. I think the thing I liked about the English version was when everyone was killed expect Lisa during the suicide attack. Japanese version didn't have that.
Now I think they wouldn't that part due to 9/11. Each a great show
What can I say, remastering FX sounds from old series like Macross of Gundam 0079 is a bad thing, it looks so out of place when you see 80s animation with 2000 sound effects...
I had a friend who got his hands on a subtitled 'Macross' vid...the language AND the violence was both surprising and oddly--imaginative. In spite of that I REALLY enjoyed the 'Trilogy' (ESPECIALLY the first Macross )imagine how surprised I was to learn it was stitched together from THREE unrelated series.
So, does anybody think effects have progressed to the point where they can make a live action version of Macross?
@XINKAI Yes. For example the seen in the 2nd episode where Roy pops the Zentraedi that gets out of his pod to attack Rick. You see the Zentraedi actually get gunned down and there are more shots of his body.
There was occasional mature talking, in terms of "good lord", "my God", etc. And concepts like death and sensuality were dealt without dumbing down. I believe one or two "hells" are even present in the remastered version, so it's not like it had the dialogue dumbing-down of a Disney or Cartoon Network show.
That's true. it doesn't really matter one way or the other as long as it was done well, and Robotech was done very well and will stand the test of time because of it.
man!! i Hadn't seen it in years. i glad u guys are uploading stuff like this. all the great memories are preserved and not lost. and atleast it makes for great discussion and debate. cuz this is the Greatest cartoon and soap opera ever!!! its the first one i had ever seen a main person died in a cartoon and not come back. rip(max). simply a great series!!
I recently purchased The Complete Collection Macross Saga and Im glad I did. It contains the original broadcast SFX. The down side is its not stereo surround sound nor widescreen. But thats ok. :)
What a terrible intro. They ruined everything. Adding current jet turbofan sounds and stupid laser gatling gun effects was a terrible, terrible idea. This intro is just boring. They show the people randomly talking and then Lisa just flips her hair for no apparent reason. The only good part is the SDF-1 appearing from the clouds. Which I'm sure they didn't restore except for the intro just to tease us cause they're Harmony (Nazi) Gold.
the macross saga is my favorite saga from robotech the other saga's just seemed pointless to me so after 2 eps into the newer saga i changed it to channel 10 and discovers teknoman now that show rocks ^^
Yeah, it is, isn't it?..doesn't it remind you of the BSG mini when Galactica moves away from Ragnarok Station & emerges from the Nebula to engage the Cylons so the fleet can jump away?
Bummer, man! However You MIGHT want to at least invest in the reimaged BSG minseries. To be honest SDF1 & BSG(reimaged) remind me alot of each other: the lone ship & survivors vastly outnumbered by a relentless enemy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Tho I like the original Macross opening as much as Robotech, I have to admit I like the original RT opening (showing the other generations) a little more. Macross works for Macross, but Robotech is bigger than just Macross. I think animated credits should have faded in faster. As for music, I also respect both equally, with the exception of some annoying half-arsed "idol" singing. From jazz to standards to orchestral to electro-pop - It all hooks pretty well! Good day.
Linda serie!!!, la recomiendo.

Exia wouldnt stand a chance against a late-Model Valkryie, a slow, melee based mobile suit would get raped by an ultra-high performance model like a VF-27 Lucifer or VF-1MS Metal Siren.
Yukikazehalo 2 years ago
Well, that may be so with Exia's single engine but with the Raiser system and amped by the trans-am drive, all bets are off and that would be one hell of a fight.
drgnlord2001 2 years ago
Depends on the Veritech pilot. Were it Roy or Max, the VT could do quite well.
Tails137 2 years ago
They actually took the original macross opening and changed the music and added sound effects. bravo, the old robotech opening was awful, stick to the original Japanese one and make it more epic... lol
Luminahawke 2 years ago 14
@Luminahawke why? this ones fits sooo much better, oh wait its japanese? oh well that changes EVERYTHING because japan is god and us meer american mortals shall not dare change the holy art of...guuh seriusly?
khayal101 1 year ago
@khayal101 Not exactly, the original Robotech opening had clips from multipal different Japanese anime series which all clashed with eachother, they should of had a different opening credits for each saga. The sound effects in this version of the opening sadly clash with the music too much. xD
Luminahawke 1 year ago
@khayal101
maybe just because this one sucks insane ass?!? its about the most boring opening ever. it sounds like a victory song for an RPG. a very very lame one :P
and yeah, america kinda is fully stupid in a tremendous amount of ways, but that has little to do with this matter :P

Okay--Veritech vs Gundam. Veritech would totally win.
fullmetalhaseo 2 years ago 3
not really...Veritechs don't really exist but lets overlook that.
179107199999 2 years ago 3
Ah, well played.
I personally thought the ability for a Veritech to switch between the different forms could help the pilot adapt to a situation and have the agility to dodge incoming fire from the Gundams.
You really 1-upped me there, great show! *gives round of applause*
fullmetalhaseo 2 years ago
not trying to 1up I just love Valkyries and Gundams.
179107199999 2 years ago 3
@179107199999 you shouldn't say ANY Gundam, Turn A, end of story, other than that then yes. Im not being a fanboy Im being logical
sonickid101 1 year ago
@sonickid101 let me rephrase that.Gundams who aren't Godlike. So lets exclude Turn A and All the G Gundams. And stick to realistic Gundams. Like Zephyranthes,Exia and the others :)

I really like it when at 1:01 where Liza throws her hair like that. It's really good they show that cuz it's so vital to this series.

I remember watching this show on PBS when I was 10.I liked it so much I bought the Protoculture Collection about a year ago. It came with the Marcross Saga, Masters, and New Generation.Plus seven disks of extras.

PBS showed this (Public Broadcasting System). You mean TBS?
animeuserone 2 years ago
No it came on on PBS every day at 3:30.I remember because half way threw the show they ask for donations.

So, does anybody think effects have progressed to the point where they can make a live action version of Macross?

does the remasted version have all the stuff that the japanese version had? blood, cursing, the extra scenes?
XINKAI 2 years ago
No cursing, some extra content though. More violence, more skin, and remastered beautifully.
masonal 2 years ago
more violece? like they have blood in it?
tell me one
XINKAI 2 years ago
@XINKAI Yes. For example the seen in the 2nd episode where Roy pops the Zentraedi that gets out of his pod to attack Rick. You see the Zentraedi actually get gunned down and there are more shots of his body.
masonal 2 years ago
Yeah the protoculture collection boxset I have has all of it even some nude scenes. I hope I'm not offending you. I'm just telling you the truth.
kingkull0423 2 years ago
idont care i just want cussing, blood, and deleted scenes, yes nude ones count too.
XINKAI 2 years ago
There's no swearing but everything else is in there.
kingkull0423 2 years ago
lame....the dub version of macross had swearing
XINKAI 2 years ago
I agree that there should have been swearing. The message behind the show would have come across more powerful.
Basically people don't go off to war and not swear while in battle. Robotech would have been much more realistic with bad language.
kingkull0423 2 years ago
There was occasional mature talking, in terms of "good lord", "my God", etc. And concepts like death and sensuality were dealt without dumbing down. I believe one or two "hells" are even present in the remastered version, so it's not like it had the dialogue dumbing-down of a Disney or Cartoon Network show.
AngelicCo 2 years ago
That's true. it doesn't really matter one way or the other as long as it was done well, and Robotech was done very well and will stand the test of time because of it.
kingkull0423 2 years ago

Amen. I was skeptical about the remastered Robotech but that opening is classic.

I recently purchased The Complete Collection Macross Saga and Im glad I did. It contains the original broadcast SFX. The down side is its not stereo surround sound nor widescreen. But thats ok. :)
xbowhntrzx 3 years ago
If they had cropped it to make it whidescreen then that would have been a downside.
Original aspect ratio, all the way.
ZombieToaster 2 years ago
What a terrible intro. They ruined everything. Adding current jet turbofan sounds and stupid laser gatling gun effects was a terrible, terrible idea. This intro is just boring. They show the people randomly talking and then Lisa just flips her hair for no apparent reason. The only good part is the SDF-1 appearing from the clouds. Which I'm sure they didn't restore except for the intro just to tease us cause they're Harmony (Nazi) Gold.
RettMikhal 3 years ago 3
yeah, i prefer no sound fx
jeffzalonka 3 years ago 3
Yeah they could have at least used realistic sounds.
8UP1977 2 years ago
Yeah I agree. The opening jet sounds were silly. And during the fight sequence they should have amp-ed up the laser sounds.
angryjalapeno 2 years ago
I'll take the Wave Motion Gun from Starblazers (Yamato) over the SDF-1's cannon any day. Much more dramatic.
EngorgedWeThrust 3 years ago
The added images are nice, but the credits are too large and hang around way too long.
The laser sound effects are TERRIBLE, though other sound effects were good.
Not as good as original Robotech opener though.
EngorgedWeThrust 3 years ago
hmm. No, Macross' original theme is still better, this one is kind of dull for me. And adding FX sounds is also kind of wrong for me in this case...

the part where SDF1 comes flying out from the cloudes is TOTALLY AWESOME!
Heartborne7thSeeker 4 years ago
Yeah, it is, isn't it?..doesn't it remind you of the BSG mini when Galactica moves away from Ragnarok Station & emerges from the Nebula to engage the Cylons so the fleet can jump away?
nickmitsialis 2 years ago 2
It is totally awesome! SDF1 forever!! :)
But I am sorry to say that I have never seen
Battlestar Galactica,I have allways been a massive Trekkie, but the galactica series, both the original and the new has never appealed to me.
Heartborne7thSeeker 2 years ago
Bummer, man! However You MIGHT want to at least invest in the reimaged BSG minseries. To be honest SDF1 & BSG(reimaged) remind me alot of each other: the lone ship & survivors vastly outnumbered by a relentless enemy.

Good day.
