Mastodon was playing at my Klan meeting last night and I was telling my friend how awesome it was and suddenly this scrawny kid punches me in the face and calls me a stupid fuck and runs away. WTF.
@KingLewi992 floyd, acid mothers temple and Neurosis. chose them coz they're so different, and im tellin ya incase you aint heard them yet; i agree with your sentiment entirely, mastodon are the muts nuts :D
This is so fucking awesome I decided to cover it... Well, just the usurper, I'm not that awesome you know haha. Check out my channel for The Usurper cover by me! Long live the mastodon!!
ok... yes there is a difference between say... Remission and this... but I gotta say... the new music is still just as good... I guess I'm a sucker for the clean vocals...
I wish Mastodon had waited like 5 or 6 more albums to release Crack The Skye because The Hunter doesn't even compare and I see no possible way for them to top this album!!
i know that this question will be dumb as fuck... but. Can someone explain what exacly progressive metal is? I mean.. it's just song that has several parts? Several riffs in one song? Or what..
@Ango360 My math teacher said it was music that started one way and kind of progressed into another, which explains all the different parts of the song and it kept changing, something like that.Hope I helped >.<
@Ango360 there's more to it, but typical features of progressive rock are longer songs with distinct sections, long solos, influence from various genres not typically heard in rock, and frequently changing time signatures. Concept albums are also common in progressive rock. Obviously progressive metal is the metal variant of that, and Mastodon's music has many of those features.
To me progressive music is music that has complicated or often-changing sections, odd and changing time signatures, many times an album will have songs that have reoccurring musical and lyrical themes creating a concept album. It used to often have high register singers (Geddy Lee, Geoff Tate, James LaBrie..) Generally deeper artistic and non-mainstream music that is a step above technically and intellectually deeper than an album of 3 minute-long radio singles.
if you dont like mastodon then something is very wrong with you and you should jump off the nearest bridge or cliff!!! because you had to miss your calling in life
OMG some kid who was behind me at a metal concert kept telling his friend that The guys of mastadon are racist neo nazis so i decided to start a mosh pit with him being the first one to get hit.....in the face....let that be a warning to all the stupid fucks out there
@humanzeez4realz some guy at a mastodon concert got mad at me because i decided to fake fun of them. The mosh was fun for about 2 minutes and the next thing i knew i was getting socked in the face.
@humanzeez4realz some guy at a mastodon concert got mad at me because i decided to fake fun of them. The mosh was fun for about 2 minutes and the next thing i knew i was getting socked in the face.
@humanzeez4realz A couple of the members are drunks, do drugs and shit, and can be assholes but they are most certainly not neo-nazis, and are most certainly phenomenal musicians. Btw, its silly to think they're neo nazis, considering one of the members is Jewish.
@somewhatpissed ROFL liar ...who said the guy i hit speaking english O_O!? You appear to be well versed in english grammar and its youth style of writing to be the person i hit....besides i met up with him and his Girlfriend after and we all laughed about it. though he was a retard he was able to be a man and not cry bout it.
@DarkApostleMatt that part is so amazingly beautiful!! brent's voice sounds better than ever and the lyrics are GREAT!!!! a burst of emotion... AWESOME!!!!!!
after listening to Curl of The Burl and now This.... I dunno what to say except Mastodon has changed my life! at first i didn't like their music.. I tried The Hunter, loved it, now i', going through the whole history of the band :D
@nursetom61 yeah i just discovered these guys about a month ago too and Crack The Skye was the first album I had heard and it I loved it right away. I've had time to listen to their other albums including their new one The Hunter and I like them as well, but I would say the Crack The Skye is probably my favorite from them. I recognized the King Crimson thing too, not sure if you've ever heard of a band called Porcupine Tree, if u haven't u should check them out too probably won't be disappointed
Just been researching about this song for about an hour now (It's for my english, I don't do it for fun -_-), and just realised how incredibly deep this album is, absolutely astonishing.
Oh man, I got the same feeling, haha. I was just reading something and I flicked onto here thinking 3 minutes had gone and I was 8 minutes in, I was like "How can all of it have passed so fast!?" Amazing song.
Most amazing show, live. I will never ever forget hearing this entire song, and album played live. This is PERFECTION in metal, and I don't listen to too much metal anymore, but this is just...was and always will be one of the few flawless songs in my extensive (and large) playlist. \m/
I absolutely love certain instances in their material where the vocals play off of the rest of the music in such an epic way... One part like this in this song is the last verse starting with "Spiraling up through the crack in the sky.."
and in Oblivion's chorus "Falling from grace... 'Cause I've been away too long'
Always been a huge fan of these guys, but I really dig this album especially.
I remember I was driving to school one day and the part @ 4:07 came up right when I passed some "popular" kids at my school who listen to fuckin lil wayne and shit. I felt so awesome when I drove passed them with a smirk on my face with the windows down and at full blast knowing that this is fuckin real music. I can't wait for the Hunter.
I forgot to mention the definite Sabbath vibe....the guitar solo and the riff underneath was born of Iommi & Co., but it is still original. Masto-fucking-DON.
This is the first time I have heard this band, they are truly AWESOME. I am a 49 year old dude who usually listens to music like Led Zep, Hendrix, etc. but these guys take rock to a new level. If you never heard KC check them out, and reply hereOh and thanks to Kyle at Guitar Center for letting me know bout these guys.

@sicksicksick182 their usual style is like The Wolf is Loose or Blood and Thunder (or, at least, i think so). I think the only song on this record that's close to that at all is Divinations. but whatever, cuz this album kicks ass.
@nursetom61 im listening to in the court of the crimson king right now, not because you recommended them, but for a whole separate reason. that album is amazing and im glad to see that fans of good music in general can expand on their tastes. im 19 and i listen to everything from bob dylan and hendrix to megadeth and mastodon. im glad you expanded your tastes too, cause my uncles only like 80s thrash and im trying to get them to listen to mastadon as well.
@nursetom61 I'm 41 and in the same boat as you---just discovering Mastodon. I'm blown away and very thankful that these guys are carrying on the tradition of bands like Rush, Crimson, Maiden, and even Metallica. I'm glad the generation after ours has a band like this to elevate their tastes while ROCKING like lunatics at the same time.
