You know Social Security is a ponzi scheme but George W. Bush wanted to invest Social Security into private investments. Seems to me, if George W. Bush had his way, Social Security would no longer be a ponzi scheme. Yet, George W. Bush is the dunce and Tom Friedman isn't. (saying that sarcastically)
BTW... Tom Friedman is of no relation to Milton Friedman. Thank God!
Rick socialist can't make that distinction. It goes against their beliefs. The believe in Roosevelt's Four Freedoms. We know that positive and negative rights are mutually exclusive, but they don't. Put another way if government can permit, license, and exempt anything it can criminalize and revoke it as well. Remember LBJ's "Guns and Butter?"
the definition of ponzi scheme does not distinguish between govt and individuals. the fact that govt is doing it doesn't change the fact that it's a ponzi scheme. people have a very unhealthy lack of mistrust of big, imposing govt.
Of course it is a pyramid scheme (as is "Pay it Forward," hardy har har). When SS was implemented the average life expectancy for a taxpayer was one year UNDER the age of SS eligibility - meaning very few were expected to collect. Now we live longer, and have fewer babies, so the dependency ratio is skewed toward system collapse. FDR demographers did not do a good job or, more likely, they did exactly what they were supposed to do and create dependency while expecting to line their own pockets.
When Social Security started, 140 workers supported one Social Security recipient, now it's 3-to-1, and by the time anyone 40 years old or younger reaches retirement age, it will be totally insolvent.
We're being forced to pay into a system that we ourselves will not enjoy, as, the Social Security taxes that are being forcibly confiscated from our pay checks do not go to a trust in our name, no, they go into paying the current recipients of Social Security... again the parasitic baby boomers.
