Great cover and lesson, however, I was just wondering one thing. Right after the intro, when you play the C# minor chord (the II chord), I am almost 100% shure that there is an G# (6th fret, 4th string)note playing instead of a C# note(6th fret, 3rd string) on the original recording, and after the II chord. I can clearly hear the G# move up to the A# note.
Please help me on this one, its driving me nuts because my ear isn't too good at figuring out things by ear :S
You really are a great guitarist... I NEVER say that. I know it's not a virtuoso style solo, but you play it wonderfully. You can tell you really enjoy music. Keep it up!
I never much got into the slow songs like this one, fluff, laguna sunrise, i cant think of anymore off the top of my head. they sure song beautiful though, i just dont really jam them, ya know. solitude is about the slowest one i jam, i love it though. pantera also did a great cover of it. i could ramble on forever....
it took me a min. lol the whole albums in c and then this is e...needless to say it through me for a loop, avyway thanks for the lesson, and the warning lesson these are now standards for me!
hey thanks for this video. i think i am going to go learn this now. btw, i listened to some of the doctor nerve stuff and i gotta say you rock. i did a few sabbath solo covers for my channel but they arent the best. check them out if you get a chance.
perfect explanation (clear and calm voice so that even english second language speaker can understand it :) ), perfect camera position, perfect tune, not that often in youtube... thank you!
@sdtn666 yes, sorry. Never got around to it, then I got feedback from people that felt the tab wasn't necessary, which demotivated me further. I do have a tab scrawled out by hand on paper which I can scan and post. Thanks for commenting.
You are a master guitar player indeed. There is a live version of Wicked World from the old Live at last album and right after Iommi blasts through a viscious solo he jumps into a jazz blues solo and the band plays this really cool jazzy tune. I sure would like to see someone of your stature break this one down.
The tab I have for this is way different. The first round of triplets is D st open; B st 3rd fret and E st 2nd fret. It sounds good when played through but when I listen to the CD I can tell your positions are correct. I wonder why transcribers do transcriptions that aren't true to the original though.
During this period, Tony was detuning his guitar down a minor third, so he would probably have played it in the position you describe live in concert (so the piece can be sandwiched between the other detuned pieces). The open D string tuned down a minor third gives you the B you hear as the root of that opening triplet. I think the tab you saw reflects that.
What tuning he used on the record is unknown to me, however. I can't think of a reason to detune for this piece in a recording studio.
@doctornerve The guitar in the original record is in C sharp, he detuned it because of an accident he had on a steel factory, he cut the point of his fingers.
He changed his strings to 0.8 and he detuned it to C sharp to dimishish the contact with the strings.
@doctornerve I think, though I'm not sure, that Iommi detuned his guitar because he had some kind of injury in his hand, in his pinky and ring fingers, and he felt way more comfortable playing guitar when its strings were softer. I guess that's why he was so amazed by Django Reinhardt, who almost couldn't use his pinky and ring fingers because of an injury too. To me, "Planet Caravan" sounds like a sort of connection between Django's music and Iommi's. Don't know if you already knew that anyway.
@VendettaMax I never get tired of Iommi stories. Thanks. He also uses extremely light strings (both the E and the B strings are 8's)... would like to try that some time, see how loose it feels.Zappa reportedly used very light strings on some of his guitars too
@doctornerve It's great to know about these things 'cause trying and trying new things and things that your idols use, you find stuff that makes your sound and style more personal and unique.
How did you learn guitar? Your music theory is down pat. Modern guitar players don't bother with it, including me. I'd love to know it though, I just don't know where to start.
can you please make a tutorial for black sabbath 'laguna sunrise'?
