I have to sing this next month for my college's small ensemble group..I hate the beginning because, first of all that D is sort of up in my register (I am perhaps a very limited tenor) but also because it hard enough ton hold that note and vocal it as "N" instea of a nice open ah or something
For the styling of this choir selection proper vowels are not supposed to be used. When I hear this piece and here proper vowels it does not sound correct. Make sure you understand the style of the piece.
exactly. it's Australian Aboriginal. If you've ever heard the language, or their singing, it is very nasal, which is what Stephen Leek is emulating here.
so if you have to take ten minutes at a performance to explain a text. then apparently the ensembles dynamic intensity and expression didnt do the job... yea... i almost thought about closing the box she talked for so long. sheesh... and ngana is a short piece. try explaining cloudburst or better yet a medley.
neato! We're singing this song too! We're only doing the last part since our choir is a women's choir but it still sounds awesome.
The onyl suggestions I could make are to open the space in your mouthes for the word *Ngana* for a more full sound and to accent the *Man* on *Mangana* for a more diverse sound than just singing it loudly.
(That's what our choir teacher tells us anyways! lol.)
i'm singing this song right now... such a fun one... i would suggest making your vowels a little more taller or something.... i know it's supposed to sound a little different.... but i think better vowels wouldn't hurt the integrity of the piece
Actually Ngana is Samoan! Next to Australia, but not quite. I'm full Samoan so that's how I know and my elders are from Samoa. JUst letting you all know, because saying this is Australian is bugging the hell out of me so ya!
Not bad I can see this piece being a little hard for some chiors. Just work on opening your mouths a little more to keep the sound more round. Very good on the end that can get difficult at some times. Other than that very nice work. -Tenor 1-KMHS Chamber Chior
Aboriginal means indigenous to the land, the american indians were the american aborigines. To say that something is aboriginal doesnt make it any particular countries and we are very proud of this piece. By the end of our tour our choir was doing "Ngana" in our sleep. Other than your slight misproununciation of a few words you sang "Ngana" absolutely beautifully and it was a joy to hear it again, thank you very much.
well you're not the only one in choir. i didn't find it difficult either...but as a whole, it was. it's a challenging piece and takes a lot of concentration and discipline
@004231 It's not difficult if you're first soprano. It's difficult if you're second alto because there's many, many different Ngana's going on at different times. The note are relatively easy, except when you get to the "lina" which was a little too high for me, but the timing is the worst. You really have to know what you're doing if you wanna attempt this song.
This song starts at 1:30 if you want to skip the talking.

Vowels would be nice.

My high school did this song, it's wasn't hard to learn. What was a challenge was keeping the notes on pitch with terrible vowels.
If you like this song you might like Past Life Melodies.

try to open your mouth more. especially for the word ngana. you get off key if you keep sounding strident.
