No broadcaster in the States, let alone ANYWHERE would pull this off today! I actually saw this somewhere with the Beatles' "Good Night" playing in the background.
Hmmm...you may (must) be right. We did blocks of 5 weeks midnight to dawns but I never did a weekend. I just assumed in my memory someone else must have done them. We had a very anal switcher who was a pain to work with on these shifts so no-one liked working them in tape. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
The movie that preceded the closedown on this night was called "Comedy Of Terrors", made in 1963 and starring horror legends Vincent Price and Boris Karloff (I obtained this information from the Sydney Morning Herald's "The Guide", dated 13th March 1989, via Google News Archive).
I remember sitting up late just to be able to watch this. It's got to be the best sign-off of any network in the world. I've sourced it before, but not at such fab quality. Thank you SO so much for uploading :-))
Yes it did. A previously posted ATN sign-off from the '80s also had this particular animated film, but in poor encoding quality. I think it was eventually discontinued.
With all the stupid infomercials playing late at night... they'd be better off hitting the off button at midnight I think!

Are you sure that was 1989? I worked at Seven Sydney in 1986 and we were 24/7 even then.

Did the bit at around 3:35 make this sign off animation infamous at all? Just curious. It goes on for another 10 seconds to the cake bit! lol

I'm pretty sure bigdan1985 has a clip similar, but with The Beatles as background music, probably from an earlier period.
