  • really cool cover. Keeps the feel of the original intact while having a very different sound to it.

  • I love this version..

  • damn this is so much cooler than the beatles version

  • @heylittlehouse

Not as cool... But very close!

  • man i love this version ALMOST as much as the Beatles version

  • blablablabla stop blablablahbling!! listen!

  • :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • why is it 8 minutes long if the song ends at like 4:30

  • wow, big fan of both bands and this cover fucking rocks

  • I like sonic youth, but this interpretation is too noisy for this song, and yes, static and boring and crap. :(

  • Sorry, but this doesn't work

  • There is a old saying,if you have nothing good to say - say nothing at all. With that done and dusted its nice to listen to different versions of this.At the moment Patty Smiths version is in the lead !

  • Sonic Youth breeds fanaticism like any good cult. And all those "stop listening to the mainstream radio kids" types. And people who think The Beatles and Sonic Youth were exemplars of a golden age of music, and all subsequent music is a diminishment of that music. I don't think it's true though - The Beatles were lucky enough to be around during the baby boom and Sonic Youth are capitalizing on those glory daze types who can't get over their teenage years cos they've got no reason to do so.

  • @curiosofsigns Man, I get what you're saying but that's only one way of looking at it. A lot of people see it very differently. Something different than what you are talking about exists within the experience of truly "knowing" these bands. It sounds fanatical, but when you become involved with a band it becomes a sentimental part of you. Those eras you mentioned trigger that feeling with a lot of people. - Your post was fun to read. Lots of these Sonic Youth posts are interesting.

  • Probably the best cover of this song. Sonic Youth is pure genius.

  • Get a clue you effing losers, the kids are alright. They have all the time in the world to become jaded out of touch bastards like yourselves, so don't rush them. Yes I love all the classics and they are called classics for a reason, namely that they transcend the barriers bozos put up to try and monopolize style or talent. bigdunk9, it seems you have your comfy little world figured, so stay safe. Growth is pain, I know. Ps- Have you met Bob Dobbs?

  • i dont think i can handle a sonic youth cover of revolution 9 -.o

  • fucking yes

    sonic youth are awesome

  • fucking yes

  • oh yeah.

  • THIS ROCKS!

  • not impressed

  • @futfut1 it happens

  • @futfut1 c'mon the floor tom bulid up is pretty good. lol

  • @futfut1 It's a Beatles song... I understand you.

  • I used to say The Beatles needn't to be covered. until I hear this.

  • Why is the video like, 4 minutes longer than it needs to be? Just wonderin' :P

  • This is from the deluxe edition of Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation". It was always a great record, to begin with. But the deluxe edition contains this as well as some brilliant covers---Neil Young's "Computer Age", Mudhoney's "Touch Me, I'm Sick", Captain Beefheart's "Electricity" and this one. Wow!

  • Totally blew my mind.

  • que viajesote

  • Wow. Great interpretation of one of my favorite Beatles songs. It's got the intensity and mystical feel and experimentation that was at the heart of what the Beatles were doing in the late '60's combined with the edginess of early '90's alternative--two of my favorite periods in rock. Man, that was a long sentence.

  • @terransage Thumbs Up lol

  • @terransage it was a good one ;)

  • rght

  • This is perfection !

  • Sonic youth playing my favorite beatles song = AMAZING!!!

  • Sonic Youth is an amazing band ~

  • Also Lee Ronaldo is pretty much the George Harrision of SY.

  • @RadioScarecrow Haha, It's so true!

  • This sounds fucking huge. I can't believe this is the first time I've heard this.

  • This track originally appeared on the "Sergeant Pepper Knew My Father" Beatles tribute album, back in 1988. Back then, 1968 seemed a million miles away. There's a lesson to be learned there, pop kids....

  • Sonic Youth don't got shit on Taylor Swift

  • WOW!

  • they ruined it...my ears are bleeding

  • listen easy star all stars lonely hearts dub band

  • proper like brahma like

  • Respectful cover.

  • what a good cover "SoNiC TrUtH"

  • Fantastic cover

  • Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father .....its off this

  • Self realization of the one self , confirmed by a continuous spontaneous frisson (aka Goose Bumps) 'were all one and life will flow within you and without you'... the Subtle self notification in the form of a frisson can easily be misconceived. So be awake and aware, observe this self presenting acquaint clue and follow it to its source... the spirit molecule. We our the children of the universe do not ever forget that, the answer is not hiding from you it is you... peace ...OHM... (JK)

  • Like this cover keeps the spirit of original without trying to be an exacty copy.

  • @sTeVie4TV ur a complete retard how in gods name have you come up with the idea that every band has tried to the beatles... your a knob do you not realise that the beatles themselves copied and took influenc3e from other bands. there are so many good bands out there that clearly have no interest in replicating the beatles or being influenced by them

  • clearly the beatles were fucking mainstream, they have close enough to the most if not the most number .1 singles in british chart history how in gods name is that not mainstream,. dont get me wrong like they were an amazing band,. within you without you being my favourite song but to say they werent mainstream is ridiculous.. and for anyone saying sonic youth and the beatles could never be matche try listening to velvet underground, jefferson airplane, zeppelin etc etc,...

  • Jefferson Airplane & Sonic Youth have nothing on The Velvet Underground. Just because they had the most number ones doesn't mean they were mainstream. They were at the start but from that point onwards, they never sold out, they continued to make music which challenged the mainstream and changed culture.

  • ilooklikeppl how did nirvana rip off sonic youth. Sonic youth was nirvanas mentor so to say because nirvana was sonic youths opener at one point and kurt cobain considered kim to be a motherly figure to him and also wanted to create a sonic youth esqe band but sonic youth told him no so instead he created Nevermind and the rest is history

  • Great cover, no doubt Soinc Youth is great, and this cover from Harrison´s song is awesome, keeps the mystic but its filled with the strong guitarr in the back.

    I love music soo much

  • ughhh, this is just awful...

  • not sure how much i like this.

I love Sonic Youth, but this is definitely one of my top five beatle songs.

Awesome cover, i'm amazed they did a cover.

It's just weird hearing someone other than george singing it

  • The Beatles + Sonic Youth are better than any band you listen to/have listened/will ever listen to - children. Maybe one day when you turn off your mainstream radio station and dig beneath the surface you'll find the pure genius of SY + The Beatles. Both bands have songs which will simply NEVER be matched. That's including this one and a whole host of others. Excellent cover.

  • yeah its true no one can come close to SY & the beatles, but you get bands like Nirvana and Oasis that rip em off so band that its blinding the children.. but hey wut ya gonna do to a world that cant open their eyes?

  • @ilooklikeppl

That's true Oasis much more than Nirvana though. Nirvana have some good songs I think. But Oasis are a second rate Beatles tribute act. Even then, look at Oasis's cover of this song, it's absolutely awful! Sonic Youth's cover is much better.

  • I dunno, I heard that nirvana got along well with Sonic Youth, and I'm even sure there are drunk shenanigan's of the two together on youtube somewhere. I mean I guess they're similar, but I don't think I'd say they ever ripped em off. As for oasis, I like a few songs, but thats about it. Not that theres really anything to worry about from Oasis anymore though right?

  • @ilooklikeppl

Oh god, don't even compare Nirvana to Oasis. Listen to In Utero, fantastic Nirvana album, and they never really ripped off Sonic Youth at all, though I'm sure they were inspired. Oasis on the other hand is fucking terrible.

  • Nirvana ripping off Sonic Youth? What? Why, cause they both have songs with the word "teen" in it?

  • @Nintendorks12345 tell em Nintendo..everybody has an opinion and its all subjective...dont knock Nirvana..they are a good band. damn..lol

  • @ilooklikeppl Right? I have no idea why Nirvana was so popular....there really a pain to my ears.

  • @ChilledLemons i suppose you werent introduced to them and listened to their unplugged album right as you were getting your heart broken by your first love and finally dumped by her for someone else. As retarded as will probably find this..they helped me find my center again and only rely ultimately on my self and take care of myself first. Thats why i love them. I can see why some people dont dig them though..I didnt th ink much of them when i very first heard them. go figure.

  • @ilooklikeppl Oasis on the other hand can go straight to hell. jk

  • @ilooklikeppl/bigdunk9 - I don't think it's fair to say Nirvana "ripped off" of Sonic Youth or whatever. Nirvana's sound is pretty distinct and different from Sonic Youth's, and in any case, Kurt Cobain was pretty good friends with Kim and Thurston--Sonic Youth and Nirvana actually toured together back in the day, I think. Also, Sonic Youth is hardly obscure or "underground", and I don't think it makes sense to say they are, or that you're somehow enlightened because you listen to them.

  • @ilooklikeppl The beatles ripped off plenty of people too. everybody ripps of everybody, it's natural. i'm not protection oasis or nirvana, just knocking over your flimsy argument.

  • @ilooklikeppl nirvana didn't rip them off sonic youth were friends with them its because of sonic youth nirvana got signed to geffin they saw the talent in kurt cobain before anybody else ... but i'll agree with you about oasis

  • @ilooklikeppl im partial to the Nirvanas, but Oasis is complete garbage.

  • @PieceofMindmusic ur comment made my day, and today is christmas

  • @ilooklikeppl But it is wise to remember.

It is not always that they cannot open their eyes, but will not.

Just as the light is too strong for a newborn kittens eyes, the reality and depth of our world is too unknown and abstract for the protected eyes of the masses.

Do not belittle the others, for they do not know any better.

Quite simply, it's how they were raised.

We are all equal, under the sun.

  • @bigdunk9 yeaah! stop listening bullshit!

  • @bigdunk9 Beatles are fucking mainstream you twat

  • @Rownery I haven't heard The Beatles on the radio/tele in my lifetime. And I am 19, they were popular, doesn't mean they were mainstream. Post 1965 they were the most creative musicians that have ever existed, you twat.

  • @Rownery The Beatles were most innovative mainstream band ever. Everyone else just copys them.

  • @bigdunk9 You do realize how unbelievably mainstream the Beatles are right?

  • @bigdunk9 You do realize how unbelievably mainstream the Beatles are right?

  • @danielabdilla I do yes. I don't see why that should be relevant though! Just for the record, I am 19 and I've never heard a Beatles song on the radio.

  • @bigdunk9 I really don't hold Sonic Youth in the same regard with The Beatles

  • @Danman917 Please expand...

  • @bigdunk9 LOL! The Beatles are the epitome of mainstream. They were more popular than lady gaga is. It's just that people, as a whole, had better taste in music back then. Mainstream does not necessarily mean bad, just today it happens to coincide with bad a lot.

  • @bigdunk9 Pretentious much? The Beatles are probably the most mainstream artists that ever did or will exist. We know pop music sucks, that's why we're watching a Sonic Youth video.

  • @Sierraistheshit ..of them covering a beatles song.. i forgot you were so completely underground.

  • @bigdunk9 and Radiohead

  • @shamwoww Tell me about it. Shit.. how arrogant was comment, I take that one back.

  • @bigdunk9 cool go fuck yourself.

  • I'm not a big fan of people that cover the Beatles, but I must say that Sonic Youth blew this one out of the water. It sounds so close to the original, and that's what I like. Don't add your own flair to a song that was perfect from the beginning.

  • So much hate on Youtube . . .

  • Tell me about it! haha

  • this cover is SO FUCKIN GOOD What the fuck are you guys talkin about??? o_0

  • thats wut im saying!! this bitch dumb as hell walkin in here thinkin she knows shit lol... im not much of a fan of the band but i still like this song..

  • You are dumb as hell obviously, you can't even use proper English/spelling to write a reply. Oh and you have nothing better to do than personally attack people commenting on the songs. I commented on how I didn't like the song. My personal opinion. I backed up my opinion with the FACT that it sounds like a bunch of static in the background and it does not have a structure with chord progressions and such like 99% of all music does.

  • didnt know i was being graded on my grammar.. and its not just me that thinks your "opinion" is wack.. and maybe you need to fix your speakers if it sounds like "static" cause it sounds fine to me and everyone else that came in here listening to it.. but wut do you know you listen to green day...

  • Please just get off the page, if you don't like it then shut up.

"Oh and you have nothing better to do than personally attack people commenting on the songs."

DERP! You came on here and did just that.

And yes it does have a structure, if you actually listen.

So, Ms. Self-Righteous, why not listen to American Idiot, and revel in its idiocy then stand here hurling hypocritical insults, and untrue facts.

  • The only personal attack I made was saying "You are dumb as hell" back to someone who said it to me. You guys are commenting on my screen name, assuming that I think Green Day is the best or something. I made this account years ago, by the way. And I'd much rather listen to Green Day than this crap. Point out the untrue facts, please. Oh and the hypocritical insults. I think you are just digging around here trying to get to me. Too bad it doesn't work.

  • it dosent get to ya but yet you still try to defend yourself... and this "crap" influenced bands like green day and nirvana.. So before you start sayin wuts "crap" maybe you should look at you collection and see whos rippin off sonic youth...

  • It's cute how you criticize other people for their "English/spelling" when you yourself only started using appropriate grammar after confronted.

    P.S. Background is one word.

  • Uh, not really. I spelled everything right, I just didn't capitalize my words. My bad, I accidentally hit the space button. At least I know how to spell "what" and I know that -ing words actually have g's on the end.

  • Hey, listen, there's two things you can do, you can keep bitching bitching bitching, which result in us laughing at you, making a mockery of you, and in the end, you demonstrating idiocy, or! You could just give up, stop commenting, go listen to whatever, and let us listen to whatever.

If it doesn't get to you, then you really should have gotten over it a while ago.

Ever hear the saying, "Best to keep your mouth shut and look like an idiot, than open your mouth and prove yourself to be one?"

  • AMEN BRUTHA! AMEN! haha

  • lmao! god forbid we're speakin in slang.. its.kno wonder you have no friends.. but its okay you tried, and thats all that counts...

  • what the hell is this. its like the lyrics to within you without you to a mess of CRAP in the back ground. vocals are great....but the instrumentals suck dick. sorry but they do. it hurts my ears. this is my favorite beatles song and I love the original use of the sitar in it but I think they could have done this song without the sitar and been ok but it it sounds like they did this song and played random staticy crap in the back ground. sonic youth sucks.

  • I thought this song was awesome, but your comment really opened my eyes. Thank you for telling me this song sucks, and why.

  • Have you listened to the original Beatles version? It is genius. George Harrison was a truly great musician. Idk if this was sarcasm or not, I realize my comment was immature and rather vulgar..I'm not usually like that. But if it wasn't sarcasm, I am glad it changed your opinion. If it was, well then just listen to the original a few times =]

  • Yeah, nothing beats the original song, thats for sure. But I think this is an interesting take on it, and so I felt a bit of sarcasm was justified >:) I have to defend Sonic Youth, they are the kings of noisy ear-assault

  • The thing that really bothers me about the song is you can't really tell what the instruments in the background are doing. I like to be able to listen to the guitar part, bass part, drum part, and vocals separately and together. It sounds like static to me. Like they broke their amps and are playing random notes.

  • That's the magic behind Sonic Youth, it's like you've never heard anything by them before.

They take those noise, and they turn into music, which is really tough to do, at least in a listenable sense, I dunno, it's awesome in my opinion

  • Except this isn't music. It is static, it is noise. There is no movement, no chord progressions. It is just noise.

  • dude...you like Greenday.

  • lmao! ftw ding ding

  • uhm....ok? Did Green Day try to cover this song and make it sound like shit? Nope.

  • no but they did destroy Lennons Working Class hero..... know what your talking about or stfu

  • I do know what I'm talking about. I don't know what them redoing Working Class Hero has anything to do with Sonic Youth and the Beatles....verryyy different. You only brought Green Day into this because you couldn't think of anything else to back up why this song doesn't suck.

  • also, they always sound like shit, so if they covered anything, it'd most likely just be in shit.

  • god damn i had to block the stupidity from this bitch.. i couldnt take it anymore her rambling on thinkin she knows shit then gettin angry when she cant proive a point.. buts its okay she tried and i guess thats all that matters.....

  • @greendaygirl07

    exactly.

sy is a hoax. they can't even play an instrument at all. they are like andy warhol - they make noise and rubbish and then take license to call themselves artists - they are not taken seriously at all.

this is garbage by NON musicians for NON musicians who are more interested in haircuts & thinking they are hip.

  • @DoctorSapperstein wudnt go dat far but dis cover is shite!!!

  • @DoctorSapperstein

Listen to "Murray Street" and THEN tell me the can't play their instruments. Specifically "Rain on Tin."

  • i know that alot of people are fighting about this comment but they should

for you to say that this is static and crap and that sonic youth sucks it just shows that you are a low IQ loser who dosnt understand art

sonic youth is one of the best experimental art rock bands out there. this music is over your head

they made it their own version and i think it is a true work of art

  • You know, not everyone has to like the same music. I am entitled to my own opinion, just as you are entitled to yours. This has NOTHING to do with IQ. To me, it sounds like static. That is my opinion. I don't like it. I don't have to like it. And no matter how much you guys say its good music you will never change my opinion. The real one with "low IQ" is one who is ignorant and prejudiced, just like you all are. I never said that you guys were stupid for liking it. I just said I didn't like it

  • Then don't comment on the video, ya twat.

  • @ARjams1 right on man im with you on that sonic youth made their own version of george harrisons composition harrison was overlooked in the beatles quite a few times until he brought in eric clapton to play with him on while my guitar gently weeps

for the white album recordings lennon and mccartney finally gave credit to him as a songwriter and guitar player

  • @ARjams1 Radiohead and Pixies > Sonic Youth

And I'm saying that as a huge Sonic Youth fan

Too many people on their high horse here, it's extremely degrading and insulting to say someone doesn't understand art if they don't like what you like, it's clearly YOU who doesn't understand art

  • Sonic Youth is a temple to the electric guitar.

  • amazing, thanks for this

  • DayDream Nation is an absolute classic.

I like the Beatles...but I LOVE Sonic Youth!

  • Like it or not, it's definately their own sound and interpretation of the song. Which is really cool if you ask me. I am a sonic youth fan, as well as a beatles fan, and i love both versions in different ways. Rolling Stone has this album on their top 500 albums of all time. I'm not sure how high, I just remember hearing it.

  • I'm gonna be honest. I hate sonic youth, so I'm not gonna vote on it, but I do like the beatles :) just not this particular song.

  • yeah im not really a fan of sonic youth either to tell ya the truth but i did like this cover and no one else had it on here so i fiqured i'd post it...

  • yeahh, you can't go wrong with the beatles.

  • wow what a surprise Sonic Youth doing this cover of one of the greatest beatles songs.. niceee.. although i like better the original with the sitar

  • hell yes

  • Very nice.
