It began when the Algerian Army army annuled the results from the first round of the 1992 elections followed by a savage repression of the Islamist parties, this led to extremists taking the inititive and began to fight the gov. for 8 years through attacks on gov. posts but later on civilians. There is a ceasefire today but it is fragile as the issues surrounding the disputed election remained unresloved. So in this sense AQ may have attacked hoping to get the gov. to react the way it did before
