Frankly - hamsters are extremely stupid animals, they cant evolve "love" like dogs can. BUT they are extremly easy to breed, they dont need you, just water, food wheel and thats all.

Think about getting a rat. It is very inteligent learns tricks quickly, really loves your presence. Also easy to keep but people dont like "rats". But for me its top choice between hamster and rat.

@TheHomestardrummer Gerbils are easier to take of. You only have to change their cages every 2 to 3 weeks vs. weekly with hamsters. Gerbils are desert animals so they urine less frequently. Plus they're on the same sleeping/waking schedule as people as opposed to nocturnal like hamsters. And most importantly, they're more intelligent and will actually respond when you call their names.
