I was so sad when she died, but she's with God now, probably singing! One of the greatest gospel singers of all time. She left us her great music and also some of her recipes! I still make her version of chicken and dumplings.....lots of pepper, and you need to have a dumpling dunker! Loved this woman!!

My grandmother and I would always listen to Vestal. The last week she was alive I went to her and sat on the side of her bed and sang her her favorite song by Vestal, God Walks the Dark Hills. Once while sharing lunch with J. D. Sumner and several other Gospel greats at Shoney's on music row about fifteen years ago I heard an amazing story about Vestal. The story goes that Vestal wanted to be an Opera singer until she met Howard. Someone told her that she sounded to "Southern" for Opera; then Howard told her that she would become the best female Gospel singer of all time. I don't know anyone dispute that she did become the best.
