To be honest I rank this behind Silence but in front of Days of Greys. Not sure why but I guess this album just sounds really cool, I like the mix between Silence and Reckoning Night. Best song on this album though is In Black and White.
Everybody comes to the realization eventually that everything Sonata writes is a masterpiece. It took me Ecliptica. Seems like it took Unia for the larger masses. I can't stand people that bitch about their progressive work. Evolution.
I'm a little in doubt now - is it supposed to be a sex remark with the "Don't worry, I've done this before, it'll hurt like hell and leave you sore" line?
@JepardyGo Actually he's just making a cruel remark about removing someone's soul. But the way he says it could be taken as sexual, because of the cruelty implied, it's almost like rape.
@MarkusHoldings Nah, I loved this album from the first too. It was a surprise to me to discover that not everyone liked it - I'm sure there are plenty of others like us.
It's the story about a man who was saved from dying to an avalanch by a black swan and paid a high price for it (being gifted with the same power, saving people). He's telling the story to another person, too.
a death metal priest said this song sucked, but i told him wtf and that the song rocks and that sonata arctica ruled, he just went to go read his unholy bible so i was like wtf
Unia is a good Album but for me it`s too progressiv. The First and Second Album was very good and the Third and Fourth Album was Brilliant. I hope the New Album was Back too the Roots.
Progressive = Great. Always. Finnaly a really good SA album - no offense, but songs like "the end of this chapter" or "Unopend" are rather music parodies
@TheSilligirl. it's classified power metal and perfect example for "old school power metal". I agree that it didn't have the strenght music has nowdays, but it's definetly metal. A remake would make it sound great!
True words. I think I listened to the album about 5 times feeling very disappointed. When I finally got over how different the album is compared to the previous albums I started appreciating it for the brilliant work of art that it is.
well you're almost right. i agree that when you hear all songs more than once they get better and better, but since i prefer the speedy songs, i still like winterhearts guild
the beginning sounds like texas ranch haha country sound i know its a acoustic guitar sporadicallyit sound good but overall to bumpy and at the end it doesnt sound like its over but than suprisely its over a bit weird
The obvious part is that a man dies in an avalanche, and since he's so afraid to die he cuts a deal with the "Black Swan". However, this transforms him into a soul-ferrying swan, and he later realizes that it's more of a curse than a gift and realizes he needs to pawn off his job on someone else, even if that means that he'll truly die.
Most of Sonatas songs are as complicated as this usually i like that
This song is about the constellation Cygnus and the mythology around it. Cygnus used to be seen as the location of heaven and the black swan was the soul carrier, taking those who had died to their rightful place.
So a man died in an avalanche, the black swan came to collect his swan but made a deal with him instead to collect souls for him and he became a swan as well... Fantasy stuff bores me
ive read it somewhere^^ there are better songs SA has written on this and older albums
too much bumpy passage hope they can find a balance between the old sound and the new sound in the future albums only song i have prob to like sry still a fan

Unia is the last Sonata Arctica album. With Jani gone, so is the magic imho.

I never understood why this album was regarded so negatively. Was it too heavy?
MykeMetyll 7 months ago 3
@MykeMetyll It's because it wasn't cookie-cutter power metal anymore. Not that I dislike old SA, but it was very formulaic and predictable.
