@guillaumel21 What was the betting sequence here though? Was J7 guy in the big blind and how much did Mattusow raise? How big was the bet on the flop comared to what was already in the pot?
@4DCrunch i agree.. he is world class,, 2001: 6th place, 2004: 83rd place 2005: 9th place 2008: 30th place! Also in the wsope 2008 main event he got 18th.. how many people can say they have done that in the recent years where fields have been 2,500-7,000 players!
I read about this hand in Mike Matusows book Check Rasing the Devil he said this guy he was up against in this hand was talking trash to him all day long. And mike ended up taking all his chips
Well, it was over 4 years ago but that's certainly not how I remember it. This is the only pot of any significance that Mike and I were involved in and he won around 100,000 from me, about a third of my stack. He was talking continually about himself and I may have said something like, "Nobody here is interested in what you think", but that's about it.
wow dint know that was u in the hand, u should really read mike mausows book, he said at the begain of the day right when u guys were unbaging your chips to start the day that some amature was talking sht to him, (talking about you) and later said talk about this particular hand and u were the amature talking sht to him all day long. But im sure Mike spins the story alittle bit cant believe everything he says.
We weren't on the same table at the start of the day so he's wrong there as well. His memory is probably addled from all the drugs. He's obviously embellishing his stories to make them sound more interesting for his book. "A guy doubled me up on day 3 with Jack-seven when he missed his flush", doesn't sound that exciting but if he makes the guy out as a rogue who got his comeuppance then it makes for a more interesting tale.
why so much hatred? Mike is a fine guy, managed to reborn after drugs and all that shit, adjusted his table talk and doing just fine. 2008 WSOP proved once again that he's one of the top players and hes much better than guys who say "hes drawing dead, he has two outs. three out"
@PureExile thats sounds like a more believable story than mikes. he is great entertainment though you have to admit! one question though, why did you call hes re raise with crappy jack seven? surely when mike 4 bets hes got the goods
@007mul I'm not going to try to defend my play in this hand. I was probably bored and decided to play a hand that I wouldn't usually play. Sometimes you get away with it and win more chips and sometimes you don't.
gotta love mike. the guy is just a genius at poker. that guy just wanted to eliminate "the mouth" so desperately and went right to school! :D
i recorded most of this tournament in '05 and i still watch it from time to time cuz its so entertaining from start to finish. Lane Flack made day two exciting.
The day any of these 'commentators' (and I mean the ones on this post) are ever good enough to either a) qualify online and play in the WSOP, or b) win enough to pay for their entry will be the day that they can start to make comments about how you should or shouldn't have played. Until then leave it to the pros like Graeme Harrison who not only had all the information available but also deserves credit for not only being there but also having the balls to make the play in the first place!!!
at least he makes up for all the times he was nearly in tears after catching a bad river card with his typical "Don't mess with me attitude" after 1 in a 1000 bad beats that he has taken.
Aww, you say the nicest things sweetie. No, you wouldn't be allowed to go too near to the table in case you saw other peoples' cards and told me what they had! But there are cordons which you can stand behind to watch. I wouldn't want you to distract me by cheering me on though! I've got to stay focussed when playing.
Both of you were right, although Mike ain't going away THAT easy on the bubble, he plays to win also... so perhaps your thinking might be better off to make a slight adjustment trying to call with the intention to make a play to push him off. If you play to win, On/near the bubble is when you either run people over and get all there chips, or do everything you can to knock the people out that you are unable to run over, so after they're out you can dominate the table.
Well, he just talks and talks, usually about himself, and it can be difficult to ignore him and concentrate on your own game. With that flop the only play I had was All-in. Although I believe that I was leading the tournament for a time during Day 2, at no point did I have more than about 0.6% of all the chips, so I wasn't exactly close to winning a large amount of money. The eventual winner, Joe Hachem, was also on this table (you can see him at 0:27 in the foreground) and I doubled him up too!
211th. I could obviously have finished higher by playing tighter, but I play every event to win and not just climb up the cash ladder. I seem to recall that I did go on tilt a bit after this hand, so it was probably the one that cost me my chance of winning the event.
After having decided to raise (and I do raise with absolutely anything) I am not going to let a much shorter stack dictate my play, so I called with the intention of going all-in if I hit anything at all on the flop. Even if he has AA I still have a 7-2 chance to outdraw him if I flop a J or 7. As it happened I flopped a flush draw, and was unlucky that he had AK and flopped an ace. If he had KK, QQ, etc, or if he didn't hit the flop with his AK he would have folded.
lol that doesnt make any sense. don't call reraises with drawing hands v short stacks cause you just do NOT have the implieds. and if you seriously want to do this... then pick a better drawing hand and not J7 LOL. good thing you didnt luck out out on mike
Implied odds are much less relevant in tournament play than in cash play. To win a tournament you have to win all the chips in circulation. From my experience, tight play in tournaments does not work in the long run, and will definitely not work in tournaments with good players. To win all the chips you will often have to go in with the worst hand and outdraw your opponent if he calls you. By avoiding such situations you will simply not be able to accumulate enough chips.
for once, there was no flush rig. i fucking hate dealers who rig the deal by rivering the flush. fuck river beats!

Check Raising the Devil brought me here. I don't see any reason why Mike would lie the trash talking...or would he?? lol
I'm hooked on Mike's book, I can't put it down...I'm almost done reading it...what a fucking life he has had.

He got this nickname at the poker table...not in prison. You can see him being called "The Mouth" at older WSOPs BEFORE he went to jail.
Please don't spread information that you're not sure about.

Even if Matusow pushed in, if his stack was about the size of the pot, thats 2-1 pot odds for a flush draw, correct odds for calling.
