Memorable song but bears a striking resemblance, both in tune and some of the lyrics, to M.S. Viswanathan's Tamil song, Paavadai Thavani, penned a good three years earlier!
do you guys know that hasrat jaipuri saab actually wrote this when he fell in love with his wife and gave it to her, before he became a bollywood lyricist. lol for a moment forget the song and read the lyrics, thats just next level writing a letter like that for a girl, i'd never be able to do it lol...
i was just few month old when this film was released in 1964...never had a chance to watch it anyway, but my dad saw it for 7 times...it was THE film those days, as it was said. But today, im 47 now, i watched it with many times more than my dad did those days...and i truly understand why many people watch this movie again and again without bored...SANGAM is truly an excellent movie, great music. All you guys/gals up there, you are all right abt this. It's hard to find good meaningful movie now
First and foremost, memorable and eternal songs (like this one) are conceived and created by incomparable and irreplaceable lyricists, such as Hasrat Jaipuri and Majrooh Sultanpuri, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, etc. Music is packaging. However, good lyrics can be ruined by singers who can make or break a super hit like this one.
Honour goes not only to Rafi Sahib and Lathaji ....entire team and specially to Raj Kapoor and wonderful music by Shankar-Jaikishan....an immortal song

Such lyrics sung with such an expression that it touches the depth of our soul! Its just perfection! Rafi 's voice is such a treasure that we all get to share and enjoy - thanks to the wonders of modern tech.!
Rafi sahib passed away 30 years ago (30 July 1980), but his legend lives on as his voice still continues to entertain and amaze millions around the world. No one replace humble, modest and pious Rafi sahib who changed Indian film playback and music industry forever. He is a book on how to sing. His playback voice changed the fate of many Indian film actors and made them superstars of their time. I feel honoured to have met him, be his family's neighbour in London-UK. RIP Mohammed Rafi.
@spsyed truly genuine comments; the legendary Rafi sahab has no match, his voice is simply eternal, full of magical melody, romance, youth and finesse that pervades the limited span of human imagination; we are honoured that we happen to live in this period of time to be able to listen to the god-gifted voice of the great Rafi sahab who did change the fate of many Indian actors as they sang his songs on the screen. Rest in Eternal Peace, Rafi Sahab.
amazing voice old is always gold.
