Jesus Christ get to the point already and perhaps rehearsing a bit of what you are going to say would make this much less painful to watch. Even for the 2 mins that I suffered through
oh no, i was not intending to grill you for that, it was more of an attempt to stop future bitching about it by providing a shortcut for others. Im sorry if it came across as rude but that was the last thing on my mind. Which i can see my attempt was not effective due to the fact that my comment ended up way down here... sorry about that, i find your videos entertaining and informative.
Hi!! awesome video congratulations on your website. I have a question, can I use a normal 5 gallon round bucket? I m starting with 75 worms, what do you recommend? Thank you very much
@bigthangs12345 There is nothing wrong with mixing worms. However, generally speaking they don't really co-exist. One or the other will take over the bin depending on which one is happiest with the conditions. The will not cross-breed.
Sometimes, when I get comments like this I think, did someone start charging for the content in my videos? But then I realize that no, this is just a person who must be very miserable with their own life and have to say something derogatory to make themselves feel better. This was my very first video, and if someone would have told me at the time that 2 yrs later it would have been viewed almost 20,000 times I would have scoffed. Please don't watch anymore of my videos.
i wanna breed them and sell them to others as fishing bait at the nearby lake should i use red worms? and i also think its a good hobbie for me! but if red worms arnt good fish bait what other worm is ther that multiplies as fast and is good fish bait? (ur site wus good its just it wouldnt let me order any worms)
Redworms are better than nightcrawlers, as you do not have to break them up so they stay alive on the hook. But the very best fish bait worm is the European Nightcrawler (not a nightcrawler at all but a cousin to the redworm) Friggin awesome worm!!!
you gave me a good idea i save more than $40 dollars my idea was buying 3 plastic bins for red worms i purchse today 2-17-09 wen i click on this worm bin composting in smaller mini worm bins wen i click on it i sad ok i can make a mini red worm bin and wast only $1 buy a platic 6 pies 3 bin 3 lids i drill holes top insides too and in the middle sides too of bin add paper and food scap i can wait to start today 2-18-09 to buy the platic 6 pies for $1 start my fist red worm mini bin & if it works

I plan to make a small set up like that to breed fishing worms for my grandfather. I plan to use cardboard -leaves (noticed you use that) and soil.
I imagine you keep the top moist and do you ever remove all the worms discard the bedding to add clean, new bedding? My objective is just to breed them . Thank you
These worms are not soil dwellers. Cardboard,Leaves,Shredded newspaper, manure and food waste are the main bedding and food. Yes, moisture is important as well as mixing to incorporate air and periodically harvesting worms to provide new material is ideal. Thank you for your comment and question.
I agree. This was a good video...very informative...however, it would be nice to have the tv turned off in the background next time. Also, at the beginning of the video, was this more about the tripod or the worm composting? At any rate, this still had some good information. Thanks!
I'd be more worried about the worms being hurt by residues of soap on my hands than I would the miniscule amounts of skin oil on my hands. Also, those are plastic gloves you are using...manufactured from petroleum (oil) chemicals. Bet there are some residues of the manufacturing process on those, too...are those less harmful to the worms than human skin oil? And aren't those DISPOSABLE...as in somethine else to go into the landfill? Isn't composting about keeping things out of the landfills?
You know what, you've made many excellent points. My initial research indicated gloves should be worn because of oils on the hands. But many wormers do not wear gloves and their worms have not suffered that I know of. And your comment about the disposable gloves is right on as well. Kudos to you for your insight and honesty.
So that I don't come across as a total smartass, please know that it's pretty obvious to me that you're "worming" on a much bigger scale than me and I'm sure have been at it longer, too. I find your videos to be interesting and informative.
I've only been vermicomposting for about six months, but I've been reading about it for years. This is the first time I've ever heard that the skin oils from bare-skin handling could be harmful to the worms. I'm having a really hard time believing that could have a significant impact. Aside from the fact that the amounts of oil would be minimal, it isn't as though you're massaging the oil over the entire surface of the worm, or that the worm isn't going right back into the bedding to scrub it of
These bins do not smell. They are earthy and any smell that the food waste might have is taken care of by the worms. Just make sure and bury the waste. Worms are the best indoor composting alternative.
I have replied to your questions twice. Not sure why it's not posting. I'm probably breaking Google rules, trying to include a link to my podcast called As The Worms Turn. I have a post there on spider mites and video too. Go and see if your questions are answered. If not email me and I will go into further detail.
I am starting a worm bin, but I plan on going away for some time and will have no food to give to my worms. What can i do to keep them alive. also if i decide to stop worm composting what can i do with the worms? is putting them in the garden an option?
How long are you going away for? Do you have anyone who could worm sit for you? If you do then they may be a good adoption family if you decide to quit. Putting them in the garden will mean certain death. Find a compost pile, manure, or leaf pile. A full fresh bin of moist bedding will keep your worms alive for quite a while as long as they don't dry out. I need more information about how long you will be gone. Run an ad or find a teacher.
The newspaper in my area uses soy based ink so no the ink is not harmful. The nightcrawlers would not do well in a worm bin. They are soil dwellers and like to burrow undisturbed.
When in doubt, call your local newspaper company and ask them type of ink used. If soy/other organic ink OK to use. Do not use shiny pages as they have a plastic film/other ink on them to make them shine. Corrugated carton boxes are ok to use 4 as long as cut in tiny pieces so it can discompose faster =)
Thanks for posting about worms, cruff93154! :) I will second damanwidtheplan's comments, a bit faster with the info and turn off the background noise, please. Lots of great info here.
Also, mimi0647, I live in an apartment and don't have a yard. I eat veggies and want to compost the waste from them. A worm bin is a compact way to do that.:)
Thank you for taking the time to comment. This was a first video, just playing around, had no idea it would get watched so much, but appreciate the feedback.
So your question is why worm bin compost then? Now that I can answer. Composting worms are not soil dwellers. They eat constantly and what they eat is organic matter not soil. What they leave behind in their castings (poop) is some of the most beneficial addition to your soil possible. This can be done in a conventional compost pile and I actually grow in 4' X 8' bins, but what's wrong with doing it because you enjoy it. Watching a worm bin of any size is like watching a miracle in action.
