Nicolas Cage did a great job as a pure Italian himself and Christian Bale did a great job impersonating a Greek. The whole movie was an amazing emotional masterpiece based on true life.
My grandfather was in Epirus during II WW. He was an invader: many Sicilians and Southern Italians have origins and blood greek , but they were invaders, aliens, barbarians for Greeks.
He fell in love with a girl: wanted to bring her in Italy, but the relatives of the girl took her away in another village.
I believe that today aren't more men like my grandfather and women like Irene.
Their story was true ... not a stupid movie so this.
Today, there are only illusions and American novels ...
Reading the book is always better than the film itself. But it doesn't change the fact that this film is one of the most beautiful I've seen. I'm not a fan of Nicolas Cage or Cruz. But I think they play their parts so good and it made me cry.
i like movies about the axis occupation of various locations in Europe. I'm sick of almost every movie done about the war taking place in France or having something to do with the invasion of Normandy. Why not concentrate on other theaters like the African or Mediterranian Theater.
See "Katyn" for a look at what the Soviet NKVD was capable of doing. Also, see "Kanal" about the Warsaw Uprising. A 2009 film, "General 'Nil,'" tells of the Polish Underground. An Italian film, "El Alamein," depicts the hardships of the Italian Army and their defeat at the battle in 1942. The Algerian/French film. "Les Indigenes," shows that much of the "Free French" forces were actually Morroccans & Algerians who have yet to receive proper veterans' benefits from the French government.
Bagprener, NOOO!!! Hehe, you even see how Penelope Cruz tells Nicolas Cage that NO, he CANNOT come into her country and make a madness of her life (it's meant for love, and the war). And yes, I find this movie so astonishingly beautiful- call me crazy, or just call me a fanatic of beautiful chick-flicks(:
No) In 'Enemy at the Gates' The RUSSIANS were shown as the uncivilized, and the Germans good looking. There were only 3 good looking Russians, and the all the Germans good looking. The 3 were 'Vasili Zaytsev (Jude Law),Comrade Danilov (Joseph Finnes),and Taniya Chernova (Rachel Weizs)
Well I dont want to hurt you but in that time of history Germans and Hitler WERE the bad ones. Go read some history-not writen by germans and you will understand. Cause the germans that came to greece were not any kind but just Hitler's ones. So in fact they were bastards. This doesnt mean all germans are.
Well he looks like an italian man -I mean his colours, green eyes and dark skin but I agree italian guys are far more handsome! I come from a greek island and we all so much wait for them to arrive in august, they are GORGEOUS!
I saw a movie few years ago and it's really great. But today I've just finished the book and It's fantastic...you just can't stop reading. I completley agree with MollieRose126
it was brought over from the UK where it is in the collection of steve Lamonby of Plus Film Services..then after filming went back to the UK..it isnt a wartime Hetzer but a converted post WW2 Swiss G13...although it does have a genuine Hetzer gun barrel which is wartime dated, cast onto the breech inside the vehicle.
in the movie only 2 vehicles didnt come from the UK..the small italian staff car and the motorcycle..these were sourced from Italian collectors....the mercedes trucks were specially built for the film from modern trucks..these came back to UK after filming....the german uniforms were specially made as they could not hire any for filming as all stocks were being used in "Private Ryan" and "Enemy At The Gates"
CONTINUED: It saddens me that 'Hollywood' feels the need to 'spice up' what is already a breathtaking tale, taking away its main purpose and theme, to appeal to audiences. Love is not appealing to others. Love is just love.
I'm sorry, perhaps you would care to venture an arguement against my opinion instead of submitting ignorant foul language? Please, what is your take on the film, or for that matter, the book?
Louis de Bernieres piece of literary genuis that is Captain Corelli's Mondolin is the greatest novel I have read, honestly. The film, however, has disapointed me greatly. Perhaps what saddened me the most was its scenes of sexual intercourse between the Captain and Pelagia. The book has no sex scene for a reason: it is to show how strong Pelagia and Antonio's love is without sex.
This movie is typical of the FICTION Hollywood produces, suggesting everyone is "nice" except for Germans. Such bullshit ! I wonder who owns Hollywood ? Aussie Steve
I would have chosen nicholas cage, because he is a real man......not too pretty....just how men have to be. besides he is so sympethatic! Being handsome is not everything in life!
No no no no no..... Its nothing like the book...... they have sex... the idea of them not having sex in the book represents the idea of 'old fashioned lovers'.... Pelagia remains a virgin all her life for Coreilli.. ahhhhhh you have runied the book and where is Carlo.... he is one of the most important characters, just because he is gay does not mean he does not count grrrrrrr
Lol! Who could say no to Nicolas Cage!? At least she hat real fun in the movie! People want love scenes in the movies. I dont want to see them playing the chess! My mother read the book and also said it was better. She is Greek you know.....
An absolutely beautiful film that accurately showed the animosity between the Greeks and Italians and the respect that grew so that today we are "una faccia, una razza".
the only romantic movie i actually was interested in. none of that teenage shit.

The best actor in this film was John Hurt. Nicholas cage and Christian Bale will never attain the acting ability of this fine actor.
