  • Bah - it's only pop music.

  • now everyone likes dubstep or indie music =_=

  • The problem is that you can't "push the envelope" any futher. You can't go any more 'raw' than punk and hardcore have already done. "Hip-hop" is overwith because wiggers in the suburbs have already claimed it and once suburban white kids embrace it - its not cool anymore. So hip-hop is out. It's gotta be a music that everyone hates and doesnt make any money, so much so that John Lydon has to hate it and it has to have zero sellability. There's your music of the future.

  • suburban white kids??? Hip-Hop is not cool anymore because its commercial front, gangsta rap, dirties up Mr. President's racial image, point blank. It's clear by stuff such as Snoop with Katie Perry, and that movie with Puffy that those guys personally had a little visit from Obama's agents pointing a gun at their heads : behave, or the monkey will get shot...

  • people are running out of ideas...that may be a very likely reason as to why the music industry is the way it is....everything has been done before....

  • What this movie fails to address is that jazz, blues and R&R is DONE. It's not about just instrumental music anymore. It's about sound frequencies and aural experiences now. And every decade had it's junk music. Let's not pretend that our generation has the only 'schlock' music. And no one wants to hear a rehash of something already done. We can't hearken back to the past - we have to do something different.

  • @BlueArmyfication okay we have to do something different, but you cannot say that every single possible combination of a melody has been done. Today's pollution lacks real instruments for one, a melody, and most of all creativity, music is a way of expressing yourself; but unfortunately today it is all about making money.

  • the dave mathews song they show on the film what is the name of that song?? would love to know as it blew my mind when i heard it

  • Right On Dave Mathews

  • Bob Dylan is a genius with true passion

  • GOD DAMN ASIANS

  • who is the girl at 2:55 ?

  • i would always turn on the tv and see some of the music that was being played and i just wondered to myself, wtf is going on how is this actually being played, its all clear now these record companies are are publicly traded on the stock exchange, they have to meet there quarterly earnings, so therefore there is no room for development. its sad music is still alive u just have to look harder for it.

  • There will never be another Bob Dylan, there will never be another Beatles. I get that, I'm fine with that, but musicians today aren't even trying to be creative. There's an auto-tune, or over hyped visuals to make them seem appealing. I'm not gonna name names, but I think that anyone who reads this know exactly what which people I'm talking about.

  • I dont care. I know I will never be as talented as Mozart, but with the internet, the only thing holding me back is my mind not getting my stuff out. Thanks to the internet you dont have to have skill which is ruining music, but is a hope for people like me

  • Napster Saved Music...before the only way we knew GOOD music was by word of mouth...but now it is so easy for real artists to be noticed by the PEOPLE...not CORPORATIONS...

  • There is not necissarily an abscene of talent in todays music but the fact that it is over commercialized - in the sense that pretty looking people are being used to sell a product. I hate Justin Bieber and am not a huge fan of Lady Gaga, but there is no denying that these people have some talent. If we can get away from what is going on in todays music I believe we will move back to what is important. That is the musical renissance we are all looking for.

  • f*** corporate profits man, if it weren't for the select few present day artists that actually have talent and make MUSIC ( such as the Dave Matthews Band) Id lose all hope for man kind.

  • As a professional musician and singer/songwriter in the traditional country music genre, this is a wake-up-call documentary. I'll be featured on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 between 4pm-5pm on WDHC 92.9FM Country in Berkeley Springs, WV. I have written a song titled "Resurrecting Music Row" (which is also the name of my 2010 tour) and will perform it live along with several other songs. I hope you will listen in (WDHC.com, if you are outside the area) and encourage others to do so.

  • How come there are no bands like The Replacements? NONE!

  • good doku !!! the world needs more bohéme

  • A must see!

  • Bitchin

  • Why care? Why not let music be music, and let people who love a certain kind of music LOVE IT? Just because the newly founded pop-genre, including artists such as Lady Gaga (she sucks) and Akon (he sucks), is becoming the standard of peoples listening choices - it's not nrealy wrong. It's just evolution of music. Bob Dylan was big in his days, and probably a founder of his genre. Wtf, wake up.. Fuccking communists..

  • Great acting .. great movie. Watch it! Full Movie World . com

  • Of course the girl that dosnt know who Bob Dylan is blonde... =P

  • Ah ya know people, don't listen to fucking mainstream radio! I listen to deep tracks and underground garage on xm radio and discover much cool new music, as i do reading MOJO, Q, UNCUT, reading music blogs...people are too lazy to explore.

  • here's my theory: most people are stupid sheep, and follow the popular trash in order to fit in, and have no taste for real art. as someone who loves to listen to, play and write music, i'm thoroughly offended by the fact that many great musicians get hardly any attention for their talent and artistic substance, and are instead outshone by fake autotuned crap (the black eyed peas being the group i most despise at the moment) DAMMIT!!!

  • Just found where to watch g th1s m0v!ie online @ MOOV ZON . COM Google the above link

  • the problem is the labels are ran by people who do not play sing or write. hence you get taylor swift. nuff said

  • and even so called "good" artists, artists who are "not commercial" are still commercial, cause they had to get this record deal somehow. it's just the level of commerce that separates them from those sell-outs like ahley simpson or whatever

  • what i'm tryin to say is that not all young people don't know who david bowie or frank zappa was.

  • Uncle Remus would say we're moving too slow.

  • @dideliskasnis who are they again? lol, just kidding.

  • i have to disagree with some of you. lots and lots of good music is still created. you just have to move your ass a bit more to find it. you have to follow the news of music and not on mtv of course. btw all teenagers usually have this phase when they worshp popular music just cause it's everywhere. but i know a lot of people and i believe there are more of them who actually dig deep into music and discover it fully, both of past decades and of these days.

  • Fml

  • she's real.. wtf ? are u from our earth?

  • @ircbelly yup, ASHLEE SIMPSON, SNL, can that girl get the hint?

  • sorry, wrong thumb. shoulda been up. way up.

  • fail

  • The only thing that is saving music right now is in the internet, the indie music scene. I watched this documenatary and felt it could have been 2 hours longer. It's awesome and skims the surface of the current condition of music.

Seeing those kids talk about Ashlee Simpson is like having an arm amputated.

Interviewer: "Were you inspired to do anything?"

    Kid: "Huh?"

    Ha!

  • Good music has died, and is still dying, I'm afraid. How? Through ignorance, and by cut-throat tactics from greedy folks in the industry who move people into obscurity. The music that we like that we CAN hear hasn't died. But for every one artist that we love, there are 4 out there that we haven't heard of, because exposure in the school system, the media--and consequently, in the home--has been shut down.

  • personally i believe that good music will never die.. just because u don't see it on mtv doesnt mean it's non-existant..there are so many talents around u just have to watch for them. music business is a tricky one and i respect the artists who are able to combine the worldwide success with stayin true to their music and not making media clowns of themselves..

  • can you give me names? cos i can't find good music anymore

  • There is a ton of good music out there. To name a few, there is the black keys, blakroc, slightly stoopid, the roots, state radio, placebo, iron and wine, and dan auerbach. In terms of popular musicians that are still good, there is basically only mos def, kid cudi, lupe fiasco, kings of leon, and matchbox 20.

  • thanks a lot

  • @theroots12345 I love the Roots!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, they're my favorite rap group. mainstream music kills my creativity if I tried to get inspired by it.

  • yea they are amazing, best rap goup in my opinion too. i cant wait for how i got over

  • I blame the parents.

  • i want to throw my radio out of the damn car/house

  • 0:11

    that lady is brainwashed

  • This video has a lot to say. Many people feel that the music industry has lost its way, but this film articulates the message in a way that no one else has been able to do. Well Done!

For the FULL DOCUMENTARY, come to my blog.

  • One of the most inspiring video's I've seen, really, check out the full video, it's everywhere on the net.

People are screwed up. The so-called "artists" that can't sing, but do have a pretty face and perfect body, are just as pathetic as the record label executives. Both groups should be ashamed of their fame, because of them the real people won't get a chance.

For years I want to open my own club so I can give a stage to people with talent. And there won't be any space for fake "musicians".

  • Music will never die. That people don't enjoy the way the commercial machine feeds us doesn't spell the end of good music. You don't like eating meat so you find what you like, right? Mathews makes a great point "don't panic, teach your children well..." - you have to seek out the good stuff a little and ultimately it's extremely rewarding. There's really only two types of music out there, good & bad, and the beauty of that concept is that you get to decide.

  • I feel its about art. Its not just something you can buy and sell.

  • its not about money. its about social engineering.

  • I saw this a few months ago on IFC. Very inspiring.

It made me regret not taking an interest in music when I was younger. If I had, maybe I could have helped the movement.

  • in the past five years (almost to the day) i have watched around 4000 documentary's - yes, it is kind of sad. but it does give me some insight on docs in general.and after seeing this doc (and the better part of a bottle of pinot) i'm convinced this is the best music doc from the past decade. but i should confess that 3500 of my docs are political. long live trumans water, thinking fellers, sun city girls, boredoms, pagua, zorn, ween, diamanda galas, pixies, crash worship, pigeon john, daddy's hands(rip)

  • oh, and home,bootsy,henry rollins,frank black,azalia snail,the ex,tom cora,billie holiday,john spencer blues explosion,all the 4AD stuff,fuck,moist boys,dolly (yeah, i said it),cat power,slint,galaxy 500,beastie boys,god speed you black emperor,how to cure dyslexia,lydia lunch,karen finley,of montreal,praxis,laswell,pj harvey,the residents,screamin' jay hawkins,sigur ros,snoop,sunset rubdown,tom waites,tv on the radio,will oldham,sun ra,can,faust... there are too many to put in one doc.

  • well that first bit really sums it all up...sad sad sad...i want to see the whole film for sure...this subject interests me greatly.

  • Sign of the times

  • thank god, I'm not the only one that sees the problem.

  • Thanks for sending me this dude,I will check it out,and yes a revolution is coming.

  • Highly recommended. I enjoyed every second!

  • I highly recommend this film. I saw it at a special screening in San Antonio Tx. and every seat was filled. It was amazing to see exactly how the music industry works. Most people really have become zombie like consumers that just take in whatever some magazine or internet ad tells them is good music and it's just plain sad. :(

  • She's real.

  • i really want to see this in full.

  • i also feel that music is dying out. i hope i could make a difference one day with the band i'm in. we're going back to basics. classic rock all the way!

  • punk rock had the message from the beginning.

the dead kennedys wrote mtv get off the air in the 80s.

  • yep, punk rock, if you while recall, was a response to the commercialization of Rock 'n Roll. What the music scene, the whole culture of Western Civilization in general needs right now is a revolution, we're long since over due.

  • i agree, music ISN'T dead, but i feel like it's slowly being made more and more "easy" to do. things like auto-tune make it so that even the worst voices sound good. i think this is part of what attracts me to more indie music, while at the same time making it so that i havent listened to music on the radio in a couple of years.

one of the big dangers of having a music "industry" is just this, you lose the creativity, and things start to look more and more like opportunities to make money.

  • Music is NOT dead. It is not even dying. Yes, there is a lot of crap out there, but there is still a lot of good music being produced. All the music on the radio is crap? Don't listen to the radio. All the music on tv is crap? Don't watch tv. In today's society you can find the good music that is still and will always be made, you just can't find it through the COMMERCIAL channels.

  • exactly! for example, i have had xm radio for a few years and it's made listening to the radio fun again, though the only 'bad' thing is it's hard to keep it on one channel!

  • Melman:

It IS dying. What are you saying exactly?

The is a lot of crap but it is not dying. Yes it is. it isn't dead but is is dying.Because the group of REAL artists is becoming smaller and smaller and why should i not watch tv or listen to the radio??? There need to come NEW REAL musicians.

  • As depressing as it is, music has officially died...And i think part of the reason that music is no longer the same is because the vibe of life is completely different from back in the day...Hopefully society has an epiphany, eh?

  • Being a musician i totally support "Before the Music Dies" I play classic stuff and some new stuff anywhere from Dave Matthews to Stevie Ray Vaughan. I will never have a shot because of my style of playing. I play gigs and i can't even attract a lot of young people to the stage. All i can get is people that have a decent respect for good music. What's out there now it trash. The music business is comercial now. Its not about talent.

  • The music is dead already if you ask me. Little 14 year old girls praising John Mayer as the best guitarist in the world??! He's just a so-so guy with okay riffs for pete's sake! :*(

  • If You're going to choose an artist to poke at, pick someone that's garbage (the strokes, young jeezy or ALMOST any hip hop artist). John Mayer IS a good guitarist and never wanted to be given the image he had in the past, at least he tries to be original. Listen to some John Mayer Trio. The guy is pretty much Clapton's apprentice.

And yes music is dead, just turn on the first radio you see and it's apparent.

  • John Mayer Clapton's apprentice?

You're the reason this documentary was made.

  • i agree but thats why music lovers should stick together and open clubs that will support just that

  • We all talk about the superficiality of the music industry, today. But what are we doing about it as artists? I was the first American Jazz singer to sing in Tianjin, China's third largest city. There is no jazz there and, after one month of singing there, coming to Tokyo, where they just jazz, I am depressed because it's not about the music, anymore, just about how much money the club owner is going to make and who is going to bring in the most people. The music is irrelevant.
