  • I came here from Napoleon Dynamite.

  • While I think this movie is a real classic (even though a bit overblown in it's production) I always thought John Kerr was a very odd selection to play the part of Lt. Cable. Would love to know the story behind his selection for the part.

  • 2 Years ago my local town did this and I played Liat. It was sooo much fun and i love this song!!!

  • so funny

  • this seems a little racist , im not sure why though xD

  • extremely terrible

  • The whole Joe Cable/Liat affair just makes me cringe. Joe Cable is a completely unlikeable, wooden character as portrayed by John Kerr (and looking particularly horny in this scene), it goes to show how far cultural values have changed since the late 40's. Nowadays, Liat's age, not the shape of her eyes, would be the fearsome factor in bringing her back to Philadelphia. Not sorry he died in the least. Creeper.

  • @MacInnich talk about creeper.....what dark paths does your mind walk down?

  • France Nuyen was also married to the late Robert Culp of "I Spy" fame.

She was really gorgeous to say the least.

  • The way the main subject of this film, racial attitudes, was treated seems naive now but it was quite daring at the time when all the musicals (except for West Side Story) were about white people, without even recognising that there were other races around them (other than painted in the background)

  • Bloody Mary is fat and she's going bald. The man is really ugly and the girl is cute. I saw this movie on PBS a few weeks ago and I was really bored !!! Sorry, it's just not the best musical. (The song really IS weird, too.)

  • happy talk, what's life without a dream :?

  • Ah, you got too have a dream, if I was to get hooked up with that women daughter I would be in a dream come true, Amazing.

    Harry Hoo

  • France Nuyen is the cute girl. She has a masters in psychology, she also hooked up with Captn. Kirk on Star trek Original series "Helen of Troy" she was supa hot in that too.

  • "counting all the rrrrrrriples of the sea" i luv how bloody mary rolls the r when she says the word ripples soooo cool luv this musical!

  • What? The? Fuck?

The most wierdest thing in the world.

I'm going to stay off the meth.

  • I seen a play version of this, it was amazing ^-^

  • The lieutenant's pretty hot, too.

  • @iAsian92

    John Kerr... very HOT!

  • SHE IS SO HOT...!!!!!!!

  • refreshing song

  • Quite delightful!! One of main theme songs of the 1949 musical "South Pacific".

  • This film had a great music score, but it also has some of the worst miscasting, and terrible acting. John Kerr was rhe worst.

  • Its so wierd how much older he looks. Lol I love this song

  • possibly the worst musical ever.

  • @mentalguitarisist What about Behind the Iron Mask?

  • The first movie I saw in a cinema, Woodend Victoria Australia. Long long ago, so many many memories.

  • My music teacher let us watch this at school :)

  • France Nuyen was sooooo HOT!!! Very good movie too!!

  • I never understood why the mum was so keen to push the daughter to the guy knowing full well that he was involved in a war. Surely she didn't want her daughter to be a widow?

  • @annalee: Because her mum didn't write the script. One of the main perposes, of the film, was to help to destroy the Anglo Saxons. The appeal was to the Anglo Saxon males in the audience, not to the mothers and daughters. SPURN THE MUSE!!

  • Something about that young gal.

    She's got the look.

I think I'd go AWOL and to hell with war -

  • if you watch this out of context to the whole movie, this is the weirdest thing ever.

  • @Lala2616 it really really really is

  • @Lala2616 even in context this made me wtf.

  • @Lala2616

Ya I watched this out of context. It IS weird.

Though I know it's not supposed to be...

  • @Lala2616, even if you watch it in context, it's amazingly bizzare and awkward. :)

  • @jonesybee33 I'm confused what's going on here.

  • @Lala2616 Indeed...

  • Liat is so beautiful

  • Racism is pointed up and denied in some numbers; but the overall effect is , unfortunately , one of a racist colouring... And, of course, it is the maine theme of the film at which the protagonists firt baulk. It is only by the pressure of war that forces them into a philosophic and reluctant concession... but concession it appears...

  • Parsecond...You have to be carefully taught... is the song you are looking for

  • You got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna make a dream come true?

  • @alwayswildatheart - Isn't that just an amazing lyric? What a philosophy to try to live by! :)

  • this song is so wacked and so weird but for some reason i love it to death!

  • This and Honey Bun is the only reason I watch South Pacific

  • Comment removed

  • how is it racist

  • First saw it in Manchester circa 1959

  • The musical is amazing! I love the happy song

  • do you mean captain sensible and this came first because the original musical was made in the 30s facts right please

  • LOL :D

  • I was being ironic. ROFL. I wasn't ready to receive so many thumbs down. I thought you all would uderstand. hehe. I'm a big Captain Sensible fan.

  • look up dizze rascals video dream, nice use of a sample of happy talk

  • Liat is so preety, i wish i looked likee her!

  • One of my favorite songs from "South Pacific", among others.

  • The play is amazing!!! Enriched my soul. Want to see it again!!!! Saw it at Lincoln Center in NYC and was amazed!

  • LOL! there was a link on a video about Hell I was about to watch that said "If you don't want to watch this, click here to go to a happy place," and it lead me here.

  • haha dangg wahh love this part thankss!! mannn ohhh my god this movie rules where can i watch this online?? T_T

  • Nice! But I prefer Captain's version ;)

  • gwan bloody mary

  • lmao this is in Dream by Dizzee Rascal AHAa :L

  • i remember watching this as a kid with my mum, happy days

  • I love the way they do it in the revival, where you're basically watching Cable die of malaria. It gives the song a much darker edge.

  • Damechastain-watching Cable die of malaria? Really? What kind of revival is this? The gritty cinema verite version of South Pacific?

  • No.. I mean, it's a great, great revival, but instead of a romantic scene it's much darker, because Cable is basically on death's doorstep during the entire song. It's still incredible, this is just so different.

  • Sounds kind of interesting. I'm all for the darker edge-this song is so sugary and so...slightly weird, that I can see how it could be effective done that way. I'd like to see it done, actually.

  • Haha This song is actually sooo annoying =))

Friends did it for exam XDD

    Can't stand it =)

  • damn this part brings back memories:)

    that lutenet(?) is SEXY!!!

  • omigosh i done south pacific with this musical theatre society there is at this uni near me, they got me to play the little girl, this song really made us laugh! becca, my friend, played bloody mary, and it was soooooooooo funny! she was really good :P

  • WHAT THE HELL

    is with that guys shorts!?

  • I know, are they underwear or something? no idea...

  • I have to be honest, we watched this in my Film Studies class and we all brust out laughing :P

  • LOL! had made smile :)

  • Captain Sensible added a New Wave touch to this song.

  • This is... interesting..... I like it because it is interesting, hmmmm, interesting -----Mrs.Critic

  • I love this song....

does Liat have any solo? I know she isn't supposed to...but, I got cast as Liat and my director said I had a solo somewhere....

  • i think that bloody mary was sort of scary looking in this movie, no offense.

  • shes supposed to look scary, isnt she?

  • Have you seen her in the 2001 version of South Pacific? Now that's a scary Bloody Mary.

  • I saw this play a couple years ago and the actress who played the girl was about 13 and the guy was close to 40. Kinda made that whole part uncomfortable.

  • you've got to understand live theater. Remember that original shakespear had ALL parts played by men (like Juliet). Good theater requires immersion in the story. Leave your baggage behind.

  • haha. actually she was 19 in this movie and he was 27.

  • I guess I was a baby when my parents took me to the movies to see this one. This song has a very special meaning for me. It´s really happy and beautiful.

  • This song is so adorible!

  • i sang this song when i was in 4th grade in our glee club rehearsal :)

  • Haha, I Had to Sing This In 4thGrade, I havent Heard It In Forverr:]

  • lol love the subtitles

  • everytime i listen to this song, i do the hand motions

  • oh, france nuyen, be still my thumping heart!...apparently she was a real bitch but she comes off wonderfully in this scene.

  • John Kerr was one HOT dude in this film!

  • love this song

  • Superb!!!

  • Whoowee--watta babe--any real Navy man woulda ditched Bloody Mary and...oh, you know. Love that scene.

  • That's what i thought.

  • Finalmente esta musica e os meus 14 anos entram de roldão. Evelina minha amiga onde estás vamos as duas ouvir e tornar a ouvir a musica da menina oriental. Perseguir o sonho sempre.

  • omg...my cuzin and i luv this movie and like she is a dancer and we're both part asian so i was like OMG U CULD B LIAT!!!!!

  • France Nguyen is a mesmerizing beauty.

  • I have never seen this. Love stuff like this. I am a big old movies fan.

  • You can get this movie on DVD and the photography is at par with current films. Great musical love story....by R & H.

  • i thought it was like the urban legend bloody mary...and i was preparing myself to scream

  • my chorus is singing this, i think i might get the solo!

  • Her name was Bloody Mary and she was great!

  • This is one of my Absolute FAVOURITE Musicals and I LOVE the actress who played "crazy (?) Mary"..what's her name ? Beautiful Soul ! Reminds me of Pearl S. Buck's "The Good Earth" when human beings were Kinder than they pretend or don't

'care' to be today in this 'new' age.

  • i thknk it's Bloody Mary

  • That was her character's name. Do you know her real name ?

  • um no...sry

  • Bloody Mary was played by Juanita Hall (who was the original on Broadway). The singing was done by Muriel Smith (who was the original in London). Liat was played by France Nuyen.

  • Thankyou. Are they still acting ? If so, what are they in ? I love their Genuine LOVE of Life !

  • You're welcome. Well, unfortunately both Juanita Hall and Muriel Smith have passed away. They both did some other things, though. France Nuyen had done a lot of stuff. If you search for them on IMDb you can find all of their filmographies.

  • Liat is so pretty!

  • So fantastic !!!, sob.

  • GUAAAAAJJJJJJJ VAYA PUTA MIERDAAAAA

  • I was bewitched by this film as a teenager. I was too young to understand the underlying racism at the time. Even this song -- wasn't she sold by her mother on Ballyhi to the 'Leftellan'? Beautiful music and bad morals... Pucinni got the rape of Asia right in Butterfly -- the same kind of double-think!

  • its "Bali Hai"

  • There is a song in South Pacific explaining how racial prejudice must be taught...and to be honest many aspects of this movie seem racist now but in context were very progressive at the time.

  • France Nguyen was so young and hot in this movie.

  • Oh, man, would I love to swim in a grotto with THAT babe-! HOOahh-! Lt. Cable, you de MAN-!

  • DAMN IT!!!! Where is the song younger than springtime, with the original character. Do you guys know who the actor is? Great vid by the way.

  • john kerr =)

  • Back when a filter was "special effects"...

Seriously, a very fun song to listen to. I once heard it on one of those automated bands (those things where all the instruments are mechanically operated- this particular one was in Germany and about the size of a full size van)

  • I hope so too ;)

  • I love this, it's so romantic.

One day I will have some romance, I hope!

  • I'd love to have this as a ringtone. The ones I found on the web are just instrumental versions.

  • Get line in this song, if you don't have a dream how you gonna have a dream have come true.

  • true, very true

  • "If you can dream it, you can achieve it"

  • i hate the film but love the song

  • People that have been in the military see beyond their own little ruts. Who cleaned up New Orleans - the military.
