  • What is the chalk for?

  • @ChadC919 You should make a visit to planet earth and then head on down to you're free okay.

  • @ChadC919 Science takes a measurement of understanding to learn and so does art.

  • @ChadC919 It's for greasy hands right?

  • @ChadC919 Not chalk. It's powder and yes, it is to absorb the moisture from the hand.

  • bastard... doesnt know anything called innovation... motherfucker cannot play any different compositions.. repeating the same monotonous phrases whicch look as if he is playing dhols. His playing is absolute balls. he is just a pubic hair in the field of tabla.>!!

  • Tottally Crazy.... Khan sahb where do u come from??? I've seen this video for years, still cant grasp it. He's a huge land mark in Tabla....

  • @diabolusX9 Awesome!

  • WELL USTAAD TAFO KHAN IS VERY GOOD..BUT ZAKIR HUSSAIN IS MUCH MORE VERSATILE.AND THE TIHAI TAFO J IS PLAYING IS NOTHING AS SUCH MOST DIFFICULT ANY OTHER TABLA PLAYER CAN DO THAT.SO NOW ZAKIR IS THE BEST

  • I love the audience's responses!

  • @AshokBhatnagar007 Bliss! Radiance! Harmony!

  • How fast. He does impossible relas. Kya Baat Hai.

  • this guy is the most fastest table player, awesome....Speed: Tafo khan variety : Zakir Hussain verstality: tari khan.

  • @ustadbadoo I love your English it makes me laugh. Thank you.

  • the ten finger style!

  • @graze900 Yes!

  • This guy is light years ahead of any Tabla player alive.

  • @selectivesloth Seriously?!

  • I'm reading bunch of fools commenting here as a great ustads while they are forgetting becoming a great maestro of any instrument or singer beside God gifted talent, hard work humility and love, respect among them and before them is essential and through those qualities they have attain their fame.

you watch any of these maestros interviews they never talk ill of other greats regardless of other greats style geographical background or language.

"Ba Adab ba naseeb bey adab bey naseeb"

  • i hv to kill three humans...

  • what raag is the harmonium playing?

  • Is Ustadji left-handed or just plays with the opposite hand?

  • The crowd's "HAAAAAAA"s really bring the song together.....

  • his index finger and pinky have the same amount of strength on the duggi :| immortal.

  • the tehais are mind blowing

  • i guess the lady with the sunglasses already knew bout style wayyyy back then...

  • worlds FASTEST,,,,TABLA PLAYER EVERRRRRR

  • Instead of Tabla Player, Tafu Khan is famous as music director. He has composed songs for numberless Punjabi and Urdu films. Tabla is his passion and it depicts in his actions and expressions. Being the Guru Bhai of Ustad Allah Rakha he is steps ahead of Zakir due to his experience and age. Of course Zakir will be ahead of Ustad Tafu when he'll reach to this age.

  • Tafo khan has very difrent and dificult style of playing.actualy his table is best example of 1st,2nd and third setp of beat.

  • lool hes soo overhyped

  • @Mega8828 so plz giv a performance of ur's and show Ustad Tafo JI's style wid same accuracy.!!!!

  • @satyanmadra i will do

actually i'll bring my 2yr old boy to come show him how its done

  • @Mega8828 sure I'll b eagerly waitin' for that... bt hav U tried these compositions Urself??

  • @satyanmadra yes i've have learnt and mastered them from by guru ji!

  • @Mega8828 do U hav any vdo's on Youtube?

  • @satyanmadra No i dont see the piont of it

i dont need to show off my tabla playing skills

  • Tabla has so many styles. I think it is the only instrument is the world which is very comprehensive. He is playing really very nice.

  • He is a mastermind with Chakradars!

  • wah wah jeeo man you are really blessed

  • O my God! Never heard any thing like it.

  • the avadhi gharaana's like banaras. What ppl don't realize is that the play and movement of hands more related to the gharaana style and comparisons cannot be made of proponents of different gharaana's like say zakir and latif ahmed. It does need a trained hear to appreciate real genius though.

  • OK lemme clear the air. First time I heard Tafo khan here and he is immediately impressive. Maybe his bayaan(the bigger/bass tabla) is better than Zakir's but no sir u cannot touch zakir in the dayaan dept, his tonal quality is far superior to anyone i've heard maybe his guru Thirakwa was an equal but his recordings aren't clear. Punjabi gharaana to which they both belong is not my fav at all, its a fight for supremacy between the dayaan and bayaan with very little soulful rhythm seen in say

  • yeh sahab tabla baja rahe hain, ya logon ko dikhane ki koshish kar rahe hain ki kitna fast baja sakte hain. bhai sahab zara itminaan se bajayen to logon ko sunne anand mile.

  • its a pity that useless people comment on people like tafo khan, dude he is beyond your understanding so please shut your small worthless face up

  • Vaa vaaa!! Kya baat hai! Ustad Tafo's speed and clarity is amazing. And he makes it look so effortless.

  • fools argue when the wise are lost in the illumination of Taal.

    Fools.

  • People are always talking a lot of things as facts. Who has knowledge and who don't. Practice tabla with good Ustad and you will start to realize how tabla really is. Recognized true big tabla Ustads whose playing is always amazing and we have recordings of: Ustad Shaik Dawood, Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa and Ustad Habibuddin Khan. Listen them. If you don't get it listen some more. There are no Habibuddin's recordings on Youtube, but you can find Shaik Dawood and Thirakwa from youtube. Enjoy!

  • hats off to d lahera player.

  • @prabalsingh1980 yes..people speak here like they would play tabla better..and yet they couldnt just keep the taal..fools

  • its Tafu not Tafoo

  • I like Ustad Tafo Khans Tihais so much!

  • TAFO KONG!!

  • Zakir Hussain is the THINKER of Tabla, what is Tafo Khan compared to him? A desperate JOKER playing to the gallery trying to mesmerize the audience with his BERASI FAST TAANS? Don't compare the two. Don't compare chalk (TK) with cheese (ZH). Zakir Bhai has incorporated the best of the Punjab ang, Banaras And and the Farrukhabadi ang. Tafo cannot reach his level in the next two lives. Even Tafo's son's shagird play faster tabla than Tafo. So what's teh big deal?

  • I am a big time Zakir fan. But yaar i wont appreciate if a good tabla educated guy like u talks like that. I dont know Tafo Khan. He is playing Dilli Gharana. I hope u noticed that. He is good..lets not compare the two. there are more better tabla players alive

  • Where did you pick that up? Tafo Khan playing Dilli Gharana? My dear friend Tafo is a bonafide Punjab Gharana Tabla player and a Guru Bhai of Ustad Alla Rakha - albeit much junior. They both learned from the Tabla Wizard Ustad Qadar Baksh of Punjab Gharana. Where does Dilli Gharana come into play?

  • In this performance he is playing dilli gharana. Read his fingers..dont u play punjabi gats. and its not Tafo. its TAFOO.. i appreciate whatever u said. I know they majorly played Punjab. But in this performance he is playing dilli gharana. Teen Taal

  • And HE IS NOT playing dilli gharana. What you are saying is either a willfull unmitigated blasphemy or sheer ignorance.

  • And yes as of today there is no one better than Zakir Hussain. Period.

  • To equate Punjab gharana to Dilli gharana is an unmitigated insult to Punjab Gharana. Dilli gharana is nowhere near Punjab in terms of dexterity and brilliance. That is one. The second is is the name, Tafo, it is the short form of Altaf which as a term of endearment can be variously shortened as - Tafu, Tafeya, Tafo etc. Why are you making that into an issue?

  • Nayan and Anindo will disappear like a fallen leaf in the storm created by Zakir. Don't speak like a fool.

  • Ustad Tafu Khan is better than anindo or zakir or gosh mosh

  • Dear about zakir g you wrote "There isn't a tabla player in the world like him".yes this is true, but remember there are number of tabla players and zakir g is not like them.ustad zakir is great tabla player of history.Respect others style and work also.

    Peace

  • Ustad Tafu Khan is better than anindo or zakir or gosh mosh

  • zakir ji ko unchaa dikhane k liye tafoo ji ko kyu gira rahe ho....u cant say like this to his thousands of hours practice and dedication to mintain this much speed and creating different style of playing................. although zakir ji is my favourite also....but tafoo is also unique and senior most tabla player.........u can see 'zakir with tafoo' recording on youtube.........zakir ji like to sit with the feet of tafoo and in every moment zakir ji is appreciting the tabla of tafoo..........

  • love u tafu saab jeete rahoo

  • kitna sakun tha Pakistan main tab Allah ka azab nazil hoo Zia per aur talban per aur mullouh par !

  • Interesting... harly see their fingers moving, whilswt they r playing.

  • superb outstanding mindblowing i think zakir hussain cantnever play like this!

  • hmmmm.. i m laughing

  • It will take Anindo and Nayan 10 lives each to cumulatively come anywhere near the genuinely vintage repertoire that Zakir Hussain represents and practises.

  • Nayan Ghosh is a good, competent tabla player - nothing more. There are scores of tabla players in each major Indian town. He doesn't have a distinct style of his own. He doesn't leave a stamp of his signatures. Zakir Hussain is UNIQUE. There isn't a tabla player in the world like him. There hasn't been one for the past 30 years and it it is unlikely there would be one in the coming 50 years. So stop wasting your breath on an issue that you know nothing about.

  • i also like pt nayan ghosh,s tabla ...................aesthetic scence, tone quality, own different style, great presentation, super creativity, balancing, speed, nikas........these all things makes zakir hussain no 1..............in the world of tabla...........

  • My father is in this

  • compoitions are to be played at a speed wherby its aesthetic value is preseved.i hav my reservation about tafobhai.

  • truly divine

  • Wow,really different style .

    Very beautiful style

  • Wah ustaaad tafo wah!

  • Wow I have played Zakir hussian's qaeda for 8 years now but his qaeda are really different, I mean it is very awesome and good, I am going to play his and zakir's mixx, what a combination

  • hey i would actually like to see that. kind of curious what that would look like. Afterall some people think ustad tafo is a crazy bastard.

  • This guy puts so much dynamics and emotion in his fast playing. Pay attention to his facial expressions while he is playing. This is briljant!

  • i have a full solo recording on video caset theanhadnaad bhai

  • I have the audio recording of this solo as well, but what i meant to say was that this is just one of Tafo Khan's solos...so just because he doesn't play dhere dhere in this 1.5 hour recording, does not mean that he never plays it...you know what i mean? such a tabla player as Tafo Khan must have done an amazinggg amount of riyaz..in my opinion there is no way he doesn't play dhere dhere.

  • hello pajji, where can i get a copy of the audio??? if so, wat is the title name of the cassette??? thank you

  • I don`t like mechanical tabla.. it`s only showing speed.. i notice that Tafoo sahib never play`s dhire dhire..

  • BanarsiPaan120 to say that tafo khan never plays dhere dhere would mean that you have seen/heard every single video and recording of his...you can't make judgemenets based on a few videos you watch on youtube...

  • i think he plays the delhi gharana

  • punjab and qasur

  • superb

  • very well done

  • can zakir hussain play with 10 fingers? Ustad Tafo does! that is his style

  • what ustad zakir hussein does with five (5) fingers, tafo sahib wont be able to do ,even with 15 fingers.

  • That is a very biased comment to make, you must realize that all of the Ustads are great. They have very different styles and their different styles should be respected not looked down upon by people like us who have very little musical experience when compared to these great Ustads.

  • well put.

  • mohammedshaikh u first of all have no fuckin clue how tabla is supposed to sound. Zakir Hussain is the man who has taken tabla to such an extent that no man can ever think of comparing ones skills with him. so u better store this information in ur mind that tabla starts from A(Allarakha) n end at Z(Zakir Hussain).

  • What about Ahmed Jan Thirakwa?

  • I don't understand why you are getting so emotional. Zakir Hussain definetly is one of the greatest tabla players ever no question about that. But just because he popularized the art form doesn't make him the best. He is certainly one of the best but so are lesser known players such as Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Swapan Chaudary, Ustad Tari Khan and Ustad Tafo Khan. Out of all these players you cannot just chose Zakir and say he is the best because they are all equally talented.

  • they r not equally talented they have there own talent

  • Best comment do far. Tafo Khan is superb in his own unique way. Instead of appreciating the uniqueness we have people criticising him for it.

  • pundit nayan ghosh-listen to his solo -greatest solo player.

  • faizrythun- bro,NO ONE IS INDISPENSIBLE.

  • Zakir is an excilent acompianist and has a very fluid style amazing peshkars, Chakradas and is a carasmatic performa

Tafo and Tari i have not lisernd to as much but they seem to specialise in theka and tihi with fanominal spead volume and clarity. All These players combine technic and heart with incredible skill. kyabat !

  • is this benares?

  • 1. Ustad Tafo Khan

    2. Tari Khan

    3. Zakir Hussain

    - Indeed Very Close (Preference)-

  • 1.Zakir Hussain

    2.Anindo Chaterjee

    3.Tari Khan

  • it dont matter who comes first they all have their own talent in what they play and style so you cannot judge who is the bestest !

  • who is the fastes tabla player ? ustad ( tafo khan, tari khan, zakir hussain ) ????

  • It is SO close but I would say:

    1) Utd. Zakir Hussain

    2) Utd. Tafo Khan

    3) Utd. Tari Khan

All are such fantastically mind-blowing tabla players!

  • Utd Tafo plays 10finger style, which is fastest. No, question about it but it doesn't mean that he is also the best. He is just faster than other players

  • I don't particularly care who is the fastest in fact it is probably one of my least considerations with tabla players. How about clarity, dexterity, repetoire, humour and so on. Speed alone is not impressive!

  • none of them are the fastest tabla players, they got their own abilities and style

  • REPLY TO 123654789985455-FASTEST TUBLA PLAYER IS ustad ANINDO CHATTERJI.

  • Go commit sucide. No good musician will put another down.

    And

Go get your spellings sorted. Maybe learn the differnce between Ustad and Pandit.

  • Ustad Tafo Khan Sahib is the fastes Tabla player because he is the Master of the ten finger technik

  • stupid USTAD Tafo Khan is the fastest tabla master he is the 10 finger style master

  • cont'd

Let's appreciate the music, and leave judgements on character out of it.

As for comments about his ability for accompanying other musicians - I am sure he could do so with ease, but would probably upstage the vocalist/instrumentalist.

I have a recording by Madame Noorjehan of "kisi se dil na lagana". I am sure the tabla is by Tafo, (probably directed the music as well), and this song would not be the same with any other tabla player.

  • cont'd

It is also important that musicians/performers respect each other, and I understand this to be an issue with Ustad Tafo Khan. Respect has to be earned. You can respect someone for their music, and not respect them as a person.

past594 posted this clip because the tabla is awesome - I don't think anyone who has posted a comment here is good enough as a tabla player to criticise this mans ability on this instrument - I know I am not.

  • Some really silly comments here. It sounds like "my dad's better than your dad".

What is important is that this man plays great tabla and for this he deserves respect.

Many other great tabla players are named (Alla Rakha, Tari, Thirakwa, Zakir etc), and they all deserve respect for their achievement irrespective of style and gharana.

  • The tihai that starts at around 2:05 is one of the best I've seen. Really cool playing.

Also, the mishra jati kayada he plays later (tak dhin tak) is almost impossible to play that fast. I wonder how he does it.

  • he is the most ''tayyar'' tablia of this era nobody can match his pace on both dayan and bayan but perhaps lacks abit of musicality that is why my favourite is Tari sahib he is great

  • i dont know anybody as fast as him

  • its amazing seeing this maestro play.

  • some of you nay sayers here have no awareness, this clip is very old, hence th edrab harmonium, but its a "TABLA SOLO" not harmonium solo. those guys saying wha are expressing their DELIGHT at anytime!>> that's how it is in India, pakistan

  • Just because the record is old doesnt mean the harmonium lehra has to be so drab. Lots of tabla players from the old times, like Ustad Karamattullah Khan, used to have some really melodious tunes in the background. It just adds to the performance...even lehra can be played melodiously, even that one line thats being repeated so many times!

  • punjab style Zindabad betetr then the other ones dheli ajrada burab benaras..... !

  • This guy is talented and fast, and has a unique way of playing. HOWEVER, it always seems like he is about to lose his speed. And all he plays is these relas...or kaidas that sound like relas. Whatever he plays are simply structured compositions.

And the harmonium background is SOOOOOOO boring and lifeless.

  • wats the ten finger style of playing ??

  • i rimpa shiv is fast, but i think ustad tafo is still the fastest ive ever seen. also, ustad tafo has an element of creativity in him, his tihais especially are the most creative ive ever seen

  • he is very good but the best tabla player is ustad zakir hussien kahn and he is fast and rimpa shiva is a girl who is only a teenager her fingers are fast just take a look at her vids thanx

  • His fingers are just like crazy butterflies, this is a wonderful bouquet of relas.

Pity that many guys in the audience make "WAH !" at some wrong moments...They should appreciate the music instead of waiting for the sam to shout "WAAAHHH !" to look good at the camera.

  • Rimpa Shiv is like lightning.

  • is ustad tafo khan the fastes tabla player ? or is their someone who is faster ?

  • The two fastest tabla players i have heard are Tafo Khan and Rafiuddin Sabri

  • yea i would agree... as far as speed goes.ustad rafiuddin sabri can play a kick ass dehli kinar style...(if that makes sense).lol

  • He is remarkable in speed and has a very efficient baya. In my opinion the speed can make the performance difficult to enjoy as every piece sounds more and more similar. The development also doesn't seem to exist as profoundly due to how quickly he goes from starting to finishing the compositions. Interesting to have all of these styles out there though, even if we have different preferences...

  • o nevermind i found it. Lala Ghulam Hussain started the "Ten Finger Style". he was also Ustad "Bhulli" Khan's teacher

  • Tafo Khan learned the "Ten Finger Style" from Haji Fida Hussain. but does anyone know who invented it?

  • to theandead -yea man god invented da 10 finger style together with the 2 finger style.

  • This style requires the use of more fingers but not all of them. But still, his style is very hard and deserves all music lovers' respect.

  • Ustad Tafo Khan is superb but I don't understand why people are taking the name of the style "ten finger baaj" so literally. He plays his duggi with four fingers and the tabla with 3 fingers plus the pinky once in a while. The thumbs are still used as counterweights to produce strong bols.

  • Ustad is playing with his 10 fingers and hence he is the fastest player ever.

  • Listen to Ustad Ahmad Jan Thirakwa and listen the difference in different aspects of tabla playing (quality of compositions, quality of sound, balance between bayan and dayan, laya, musicality, dynamics etc.). If you want to listen to other great masters you can continue to Ustad Shaik Dawood, Ustad Habibuddin Khan, Ustad Afaq Hussain, Ustad Wajid Hussain, Ustad Ballu Khan and so on.

  • whoever you are, whatever you do, when you let ego get in the way you're finished.

  • are you referring your comment to me? or Ustad Tafo..

  • are you referring your comment to me? or Ustad Tafo..

  • is "ten finger style playing" really comparable...with others that are not....????

  • I would say no. It is distinct and the range of bols that can be played is increased and sometimes made easier to produce and sometimes not. The other styles which include Khula baaj, Kinaar baaj, and Purbi have their own repertoires and should be respected as such.

  • The "ten fingers baaj" is a subset of one of the many silsilas of the Punjab style. There are many sub-styles within the Punjab style but having said that, it is still tough to compare this style to the others.

  • i have also heard this story regarding Ustad Tafu challenging other tabla players.....if its true.....this guy need a reality check......he is in no way as versatile as some of the other tabla masters......as good and as fast as he is....he seems to me to be a showman....here is a link....trust me....there are some serious tabla masters on her...with old archived recordings.....its on james kippens website which i cant type as it is website....but he has his own site find it....peace

  • ustad tafu khan is the best fastest player. wow!

  • He's the fastest tabla player I've ever seen, he is awesome. I heard that people barely liked him, is that true?

  • Bravo!!!!

  • All of you are silly and don't even understand tabla. Noone has the right to say anything about beloved Punjab. You all are so ignorant and know nothing of Punjab except for what you have heard Zakirji play. Tafuji learned from Miyan Qader Bakshji. Tafuji and Alla Rakhaji and the great Ustad Miyan Shaukat Hussain Khansahib are all gurubhais. Get educated about tabla before you all think you have even a small idea what tabla is.

  • Zimrang Your The Man Thanks For Telling Them I Agree With You 100% Everyone Bases Tabla On What Zakirji Does Zakirji Probably Is The Best Or One Of The Best But You Cant Judge Tabla Based On What One Man And His Style Are So Ignorant Please Think Before You Leave Dumb Comments

  • yep..totally agree with bhilaj ji..

  • Rishloo we can say the same about Pt Samta Prasad or Ustad Shaukat Hussain. We don't really need some specific artistes' names to appreciate the art. We need to learn it for ourselves more than anything else.

  • just great, but i still believe a good tabla player is a combination of riyaaz(practice) and TALEEM( learning). If you listen to anindo chhaterjee's or pandit shyamal bose's tabla then you ll understand the depth and beuty of this amazing art

  • Rishloo,

Youve been listening to too much Calcutta tabla. Please realize that there are other styles of tabla playing on the subcontinent. Not all, fit "your" definition of tabla solo.

  • Past594 i am by no means trying to categorise tabla to any particular region and i dont think there is any thing such as calcutta tabla, but i do know how great maestros have benchmarked a good tabla player. By no speck of imagination i am trying to show a negative aspect about khan sahib but you have to admitt even being a representative you have to fulfill some basic dimensions of tabla playing like the combination of comosition dexterity and sound balance

  • There is a Calcutta tabla style... well actually it fits within the Eastern style of playing. Shankar Ghosh is credited with being the founder of Calcutta Gharana (if it exists).

  • actually it is the farukhhabad gharana and the present khalifa is sutad sabir khan. As most of the artists of this gharana stayed in calcutta for a long time like masit khan, karamutullah khan ahmad jaan thirakwa, gyan prakash ghosh shyamal bose and shankar ghosh, people believe it is the calcutta style.

  • The Calcutta style is really just the Farrukhabad style. Its name has arisen because Jyan Prakash Ghosh taught many students in Calcutta, whence its name came.

  • I am a student of Pandit Shankar Ghosh.

Sonofthedestroyer is correct - my Guruji mainly learnt the Farukhabad style of playing but through the understanding of all the styles, he has made a weath of compositions to teach his students and so his students are learning a Calcutta Gharana style as he likes to call it for some reason.

He admits it is mainly Farukhabad but to make it distinctive, he calls it Calcutta style.

  • One of the greatest Punjab style Tabliyas was the late Ustad Bashir Hussain Goga. He played thematically but could do so at blazing speeds. You can easily find an mp3 of his music on the web. judge for yourselves.

  • A quick note: This is not Ustad Tafo's own invented style. His guru, Ustad Ghulam Hussain Khan Jullandhari, invented the ten finger tabla style. He taught his son, Ustad Faryaad Hussain Khan and Ustad Tafo. Listen to Ustad Faryaad Hussain's CD. Ustad Faryaad was just as good as Ustad Tafo but more modest.

  • This Player (Ten Fingers Tafo) I shall call him with respect; has the One thing that makes him stand out from a very large crowd (In Tabla Players) and thats ORIGINALITY ! Only good tabla players should be allowed to comment here as it is only they who can appreciate him with understanding. Thanks for the clip.

  • ustad tafo ji's tabla..actually is very complex...n does not lack anyhting..he made his style so that it is hard to copy..u see many tabla players copying many of ustad zakir husssain ji's pieces..but tafo khan ji's in my opinion r harder to copy..very complex finger movement style...

  • don´t be mistaken..one of the very best tabla players there is...look to the crowd response..and there is some of the finest players in that crowd! respect!

  • incredible dugga technique!!

  • Love the bit where he accelerates at around 01.39 minutes.

  • Ustaad Tafo's tabla is fast yes, but it lacks the technical aspect of tabla. It is amazing what he can do, but it is not constructive as if you listen to Ustaad Tari, or Ustaad Zakhir Hussain. To play a tabla solo, there has to be an equal number of both "tayari" and composition.
