  • You can't really use the cross block for a low kick in MMA but the trade-off there is you can slam them instead :)

  • Gee, I hate getting kicked in the leg--it hurts. Block and knock the MF out.

  • how about trying to be light on your feet and try to just make him miss?

  • A nice stop kick works pretty good as well, just throw a teep(foot jab) towards his knee or instep and jam his kick and follow with your hands, heck you can even teep his base leg at the knee joint to damage it ,just make sure your timing is good.

  • leg kicks are better then kicking the mid secton of the body cos if u kick it be hard them to kick or stand, with the belly there only going to go down, the head is good to for kicking cos there not going to stand. :-)

  • I am also told to block with the lower part of the shin, which is less painful! Shin block is a standard way against the low kick but I do believe it will always hurt a bit no matter how conditioned the shin is! Shin and foot are just very sensitive everytime when they land on anywhere of the body! I just always try to step in instead of blocking it when I see a low kick coming to me!

  • I always thought that the sort of block that sifuwilley was referring to was the best for blocking this type of kick, but it doesn't seem to be done in any videos of muay thai fights that I've seen. Can anyone tell me why this is? Is the block just not really feasible?

  • @prisoner694 This block works, but could be very, very, very painful, even damage a lot! In Muay Thai fighters uses this block very often, I don't know how many and how often you see Thai fight but I see that very often!

  • The shin is a sensitive part of human body, and fragile likewise.

This defense is stupid, the best way to defend a low kick, is to be fast enough and "not be there"

  • @darkairaxandrew

Raising your leg and blocking with your shin is standard kickboxing defense against a low kick. Obviously you've never trained for it. I'd like to see you dodge EVERY single low kick thrown at you.

  • since i have a proper training to be fast enough, i can do it, and i had done it.

And belive me it is much more easy and it makes it less painful, which is one of my targets, to still alive and painless after a fight

  • @darkairaxandrew when defending with the lead leg (lead leg cross block) there is contact with the bone. But the first deffense shown is OK because the contact in this one is with your muscle, then you can afford.

  • Ideally, the defender uses the hard upper part of the shin (below the knee) against the kicker's ankle- between their foot and shin.

And of course, it's better to "not be there."

Don't be so fast to call things "stupid"-- it's a learning disability.

  • tonyvandemil, this song is KoRn - Predictable

  • whats the name of the song in the intro?

  • when you lift your knee to block the kick, do you point your toes up or down to tense the leg? or should you even tense the leg at all?

  • GREAT VID ! only have one problem with the bringing your back leg across to block . you should just try to train each leg to block each side/

  • I don't Block w/ the shin, I step in a little and drive a knee to the iner thigh Of the kicking leg ! and you can knee the base leg after if you like.

  • @sifuwilley Good ! Do you have any link which is showing how to do that ? Thank you Sifu ...

  • @sifuwilley im a kickboxer and we just block with shin stepping a LITTLE bit forward to counter with punches or kick, depends

  • Very good vid.But I still can't believe you can block a shin kick with your shins, shin to shin, you just break both your and your opponnents shin right?I just tried it with my brother,it hurts a lot, hurts less if i just take the blow lol.

  • they spend alot of time conditioning they`re shins and they like to hit bannana trees to deaden the nerves in the leg so they cannot feel pain,i love thai boxing in general but dislike the conditioning of the shins.

  • Also when catching a low kick you bring your leg back slightly to catch their foot on your shin, this hurts alot as the small bones in your foor are easy to break especialy on a conditioned shin!

  • " but dislike the conditioning of the shins" Really? i love that part of it. I love that about it.

  • they didn't kill the nerves, they just harden it. I don't know what you train, but when I was a child, we trained by hitting our arms on sandbag or tree to harden it, not fist, but upper and lower bones of the forearm, so we could hit people with our forearm (not fist). In our style we did that. Shine is hard to train, but it is definitely not to kill the nerves. After you practice, your bone's density will increase and become harder.

  • @ukbassmassive for sure but u dont HAVE to conditionning em that way to be a good muay thai fighter obviously...

  • @ukbassmassive kicking heavy bag with bare shins is a great conditioning

  • You need to condition your shins to do shin blocks. For you at least in a fight scenario or in sparring if your just trying to beat up your sparring partner I'd say to check the kick with the sides of your calf, just be sure not to flex or "muscle block" the kick.

  • thnx ft advice!

I think the "muscle block" in general is a common misconception,it should only be used with muscles that protect vital organs etc,eg muscle block should be used when receiving a punch or kick to the belly(muscle block with the Obliquus externus abdominis(abdomen muscles))to at least provide some protection your stomach.muscle block should not be used with other parts of the body as you pointed out eg the leg muscles cause you will end up being hurt more by talking muscle dmge.

  • Also really you can block with the base of your knee just as sifuwilley said but only on low kicks. Just don't do it on middle kicks there's too much danger in it slipping off and hitting you in the face.

  • I must have a lot of nerves in my shin or something because after years of shin to knee, shin to elbow and shin to shin, it STILL bloody hurts in an agonizing sort of way :-P.

Great vid. Thanks for posting :)

  • Me too but I've only really done actual shin conditioning for a few months. I guess it'll always hurt a little. I've been a little retarded lately and have a bad bruise on my bone from trading kicks with a guy whos nerves are basically dead. And I have a fight coming up in around January or February and with kicks being my best weapons I REALLY hope they heal up faster. I've been putting boxing liniment on them. Do you have any good ways to heal my shins faster? Without rolling them...
