  • Looks like we have all the usual cloth eared experts that know it all again, music is not a competition it is something to be enjoyed, and 88 dislikes out of nearly half a million is no mean feat. To be respected by "real" musicians says all there is to know.

  • Never heard of her but now I'll never forget. Stunning captivating voice.

  • A new recording by Becky has been uploaded. Please search YouTube for:

“Becky Jane Taylor - Sailor 2011”

  • You can receive information from Becky and send messages to her on her Facebook and twitter sites. Also, you can follow Becky on twitter. Finding these sites is easy. Just web search for, “Becky Jane Taylor Fans” then on that site click ‘Stay in the Loop’ you will then find links to Becky on Facebook, twitter, and myspace all on one page.

  • Very bad!!!

  • beautiful sound. unlike the noise some twats are making on here. let us hear if you can do better, if not, stop being such pretentious pillocks and go and do something useful with your petty little selves.

  • There is a new Becky video on You Tube. Please search You Tube for: "Becky Jane Taylor - 6 Nations (Singing The Same Song)” I think it has some connection with the Rugby World Cup, something similar to Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma a few years ago at the Football World Cup.

  • someone should teach this girl some italian, and then she should try again.

  • @ClemvSt not cool

  • To mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11 I have uploaded a video tribute to the fire fighters and others on rescue work in the twin towers disaster with pictures before and after the disaster. Search You Tube for: “Becky Jane Taylor In New York – 9/11 Heroes”

  • dislike. terrible pronunciation.

  • some of you are just haters, she has an amazing voice

  • Sorry, there is the french coloratura,Patricia petibon; the canadian,Suzie Le Blanc and the Roumanian mezzo,Cristina Lordachescu.I just cant get into the pop girls doing this! I love listening to BJ doing other vocals-just not Haendel.

  • @SuperJohnnykay This is a short version of the aria; coloratura usually comes in the latter part of the longer version. The ‘pop girls’ sing this because it is a popular song. Haendel would have heard lots of people singing this outside of opera. It was the pop music of his day.

  • @Bish29 :Well OK,Bish,I hear what you are saying.

  • @Bish29 :I guess it comes down to what effect this has on you, emotionally!I am not being an opera snob. There are renditions on YT from some fine sopranos who just seem to be going through the motions. In any case,Wishing You were... is a fine rendition,& thank you for posting.

  • Pretentious...

  • way too pop style. This song should NEVER be sang in any kind of pop style...

  • Oh wow. Seriously. I thought her you raise me up cover was impressive. This girl really has the vocal versatility and quality like none I have heard in a very long time!

  • Becky has just made a recording of the song, Was It Only Sunday. Fans can find this video easily by copying and pasting into You Tube search: TonyClaymanPromotions

  • Dear Becky: run in the olympics, swim the channel, fence, be shining in perfume ads, marry into nobility or riches or both, flower in a spring field, become a poker ace, travel the world, fall in love, make millions desperately fall in love with you, sing in the rain, but please, please, please, do not sing Lascia Ch´io Pianga anymore or opera for that matter. Thank you very much.

  • @debttopleasure You don’t need to be a world famous experienced opera star to sing operatic arias as popular songs in concerts. Judging by the viewing figures and ‘likes’ this video seems to be enjoyed by many viewers. What you should do now is click on the link ‘Bish29’ below this message to hear Becky sing Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, from The Phantom of the Opera..

  • can you get this on iTunes?

  • The audio has a very disturbing hiss. It really should be fixed!

  • hot hot hot hot x

  • Tooth-grindingly bad in places. No good.

  • sehr schön!!!

  • Let me say something. To all of the pompous classical assholes out there who have nothing better to do than to insult young female singers who are not "mainstream classical" when they attempt to sing these arias, you have absolutely NO maturity. Becky has a gorgeous voice, and absolutely rocks this piece. Put a friggin cork in your negative comments, and take your elitism out of the faces of those who are trying to enjoy this music.

  • I was born the same day as her, but in 1994

  • I have now uploaded a video of Becky singing Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, from the musical Phantom Of The Opera. To find, please click below title of THIS video, where it says ’18 videos’.

  • Okay, guys, she was only 19 when she did this. Give her a break! I think she did an AMAZING job!!! She has the voice of an angel, and I can always feel the emotion in her voice. She's a beautiful singer, and so is Hayley Westenra!

  • A bit better than Hayley Westenra but could learn a lot from listening to patricia Petibon!Oh, thats how you are supposed to sing it!!!!

  • woah.... shes only 19 there! :O

  • @Bish29 I never said I thought she was an opera singer, I can gather that she is not. However, if she is going to sing operatic arias she should make some effort to learn the sense of style beforehand.

  • @suzymcgrath Sorry, when you said “it is right to ask young singers to watch great artists”. I thought you were referring to opera singers. They all have their own sense of style, as do other singers. I think it’s a big mistake to copy other singers. She is doing very well singing the way she has been taught. Just look at her viewing figures for ‘You Raise Me Up’ (well over 2 million) and ‘My Heart Will Go On’. Also, the viewing figures and ‘likes’ are quite good for this aria.

  • @Comodusprimus You are SO right. No dignity, no line, appalling pronunciation and horrible ornamentations on the da capo. @Bish29 it is right to ask young singers to watch great artists. They then learn how not to sing in such a self-indulgent manner.

  • @suzymcgrath Becky is not an opera singer. She sings operatic arias and other songs in concerts and on CDs. Please read my replies to Comodusprimus

Here is a clip from an article about West Side Story, at the Gala Theatre Durham: “Every scene with Ben Starr’s Barnardo and Becky Grosvenor-Taylor’s Anita in it sizzled with chemistry. Indeed, Starr and Grosvenor-Taylor provided two of the most electric performances of the evening.”

Becky’s full name is Rebecca Jane Grosvenor-Taylor.

  • I think that this performance shows that she has a lot left to learn actually...

  • Despite my intense love for bartoli and the others, I just happen to adore this rendition. Her voice is so drastically different than anyone else's...its refreshing.

  • la più brutta versione che abbia mai sentito.

  • wow she grew

  • I don´t like this version.

  • High notes sound very clean but not the low register is all fussy

  • People . . . please . . . it is not the pronunciation but the absence of technique, meaning and dignity. There is as much pleasure hearing this profoundly tragic aria sung by a mediocre and uncomprehending talent as there would be listening to Shakespeare recited by Stephen Hawking. Why do so many people spend their lives staring at their feet. Look up, for pity's sake.

  • @Comodusprimus You said: “sung by a mediocre and uncomprehending talent”:

The Huddersfield Examiner Reported on her singing of this aria:

“Becky Jane's voice, with its clarity, purity of tone

and considerable power, was shown to far

better advantage when singing not the crossover style, but

the work for example of Handel in the aria Lascia ch'io

    pianga”.

  • @Bish29 i assume the irony in your is unintentional . . . if we must defer to no greater authority on baroque opera than the Huddersfield Examiner then the hosts of the deluded at Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, La Scala , the Met etc should all pack up and go home. . . .

Pax anyway . . . I invite you you listen to the same aria, sung (their assessment by the Huddersfield Examiner notwithstanding) by Patricia Petibon, Cecilia Bartoli, Angela Gheorghiu or Renee Fleming, and weep.

  • @Comodusprimus How do you know that the reporter is not one of the people that visit the opera houses you mention, and assume that he/she has little knowledge of opera? The reporter was at the concert listening to Becky’s live performance of six songs. You have only heard a recording. You have invited me to listen to four of the worlds top sopranos, therefore assuming, wrongly, that I have not already done so. You are wrong to compare young singers with world famous experienced opera stars.

  • @Bish29 - I have worked on newspapers for the past 35 years and have edited three of them. From what i know of regional dailies I would not set much store by what the Huddersfield Examiner reporter/critic thinks. Anyway, that's not the point. Attempting to explain why sweet Becky Jane's Handel rendition is not a sublime piece of artistry to those who fall at her feet is like trying describe rain to battery hens.

  • @Comodusprimus You wrote: “I would not set much store by what the Huddersfield Examiner reporter/critic thinks”. Having previously said that you yourself have worked on newspapers for 35 years, does that mean we should not set much store by your recent comments?

Here is a good question for you. Who said that Sweet Becky Jane’s Handel rendition was sublime?

  • @Bish29 Having said that, your quote is from the Huddersfield Examiner... I doubt that publication is famed for hard-hitting music journalism. Just saying...

  • @Comodusprimus This is Lascia ch'io pianga by Händel, sung by Becky Jane Taylor in concert at Huddersfield Town Hall with brass band accompaniment.

Becky Jane Taylor is an English soprano who has made 3 albums, made television appearances all over the world, performed in outdoor and indoor concerts including 3 shows at the Royal Albert Hall where, on one occasion, she met HRH Prince Charles. She also appeared as young Eponine in 'Les Miserables' in London when she was 7 years of age.

  • @Bish29: So? If public approbation were ever an indication of quality, then the Nuremburg rallies would make Hitler one of history's greatest politicians. BJT has a pretty voice, I'll grant you, but this is not Handel, it lacks drama, intelligence and dignity. What I find incomprehensible is why so many people willfully deny themselves the pleasure of experiencing one of the most moving baroque arias in the repertoire when it's so within reach.

  • @Bish29 what does all of that change about the quality of her performance?

  • @duipanijackyque What does all of WHAT change? I would love to answer your question if you would let me know what it is.

  • There may be more "correct" versions out there, but this is by far the most beautiful version I've heard. What's more, it's a live version....just incredible.

  • 神に選ばれもの。いいはずよ。

  • i just watched the "once upon a december" video of her wow! i have to stay stunning and elegant she is:)

  • @Uhbu1 I meant that from your comment, many people would get the Impression that you did not like the video.

  • @Uhbu1 It must be difficult to pronounce each word correctly when you are singing in a language which is not your own. However, I am glad you liked the video, although you didn't mention that in your comment.

  • WOWW! I'm not keen as to the pronunciation and what not, but I think this was FABulous! Beautiful! GOOD LUCK to Becky in her endeavours!!

  • what a hottie... for that, I'll accept the octave lower singing

  • looks far better than she sings...

  • happy birthday for yesterday becky, keep that amazing voice going girl XD

  • こんな美しい歌声を聴いたら、神を信じたくなる。

  • Why do purists even watch and listen to these videos and crossover singers? Go and listen to your Gheorghiu, and enjoy her. It's like that you all have an axe to grind. No, these singers are not opera singers, so of course they are not going to sing these arias like opera singers. But it's all free material open to any kind of artist interpreting and arranging it in anyway they see fit. If you don't like it, don't listen to it! Would be nice if you could respect that people DO enjoy this.

  • Hi Harold (Bish 29 for the uninitiate)

It is good to see you are still posting here.

I will never understand the condescending comments form the cogniscenti whenever anyone who hasnt trained all the natural beauty out of their voice attempts to sing an aria.

    Jon

  • @milewalker1 Yes Jon, I'm still here. I shall be 88 next month, but whose counting? I can’t understand why people make such comments about singers either.

Becky graduates in the next few weeks, having studied History at Durham University. She then plans to re-establish her music career. I'm hoping this will be Becky's big year.

    Harold.

  • She's rather good but i prefer the Celtic Woman a lot more. You should listen to her on this song. Just type in Lascia ch'io pianga Celtic Woman.

  • Ce morceau est si beau que nous l'avons transcrit pour duo flute guitare

    Michel et Jean

  • Ce morceau est si beau que nous l'avons transcrit pour duo flute guitare

    Votre voix est magnifique

    Michel et Jean

  • Shes sooo pretty and has an amazing voice!!! if you listen and look at her when shes smaller there is a massive difference!

Not in a bad way she was pretty and had a lovely voice when she was younger well..... you know what I mean.

  • Singer has a beautiful voice and lovely musicality. Lots of potential. She could, with training become an excellent singer. But now is just a talented beginner. Anyone studying this aria should look elsewhere for a proper example of how to approach this.

  • @charluti I presume that when you say that Becky, "is just a talented beginner" you are just referring to her singing this aria and have not clicked on the information just below the video picture. If you copy and paste, "Becky Jane Taylor" into the You Tube search, you will be surprised to see that she has been singing as a child for many years. Please listen to some of her other songs.

  • Well, I was really impressed.

  • Very bad singing!

  • I love it. She has a lovely voice and it makes me wan to go see an Opera...

  • please someone tell her to learn italian...

  • @mex73aussie If you don't understand her words, please copy and paste into You Tube search: 'Bish29+Becky Jane Taylor+Lascia ch'io Pianga (English Subtitles'.

  • @Bish29 hi there , I am italian and I know this handel's opera...

  • @Bish29 I am Italian mate... and I use to go to opera...

  • @mex73aussie I think you understand every word she sings, it’s just that you complain about the pronunciation of some words. When an Italian girl sings in English she may not pronounce every word correctly, but I would not complain about that.

  • Comment removed

  • @Bish29

Hi bish29, thanx for your comment, I am italian and it is diffucult for me to understand, she has a strong accent ...

She is pretty, cute and young and she has a really nice voice... i think she just need time...

    take care...

p.s. look for Cecilia Bartoli and see the different....

  • @Bish29 I'm afraid I would also complain if I went to see Rinaldo and the pronunciation in this (or any) aria was not up to scratch. Handel was a German composer, who spent years of his life in England. He used an Italian libretto for a reason, and would not have been impressed had his singers not worked on pronunciation. As a singer, I feel it is important to study the text so that I have a thorough understanding of the music, and pronunciation is part and parcel of offering a good performance.

  • @MaeWestsKnickers It seems that you would not sing any song in any language unless you could pronounce every one of the words correctly. Does this mean that you never sing songs in English where there are many different dialects, and therefore pronunciations, not just in the UK but also all over the world? When an Italian girl sings in English she may not pronounce every word correctly, but I would not complain about that. If she was a good singer I would enjoy listening. You wouldn’t.

  • @Bish29 Totally agree. In fact, I have listened to so many different singers during my own being-on stage, and before and later in the audience. Often you cannot understand a singer singing in his/hers own language, and yet it is enjoyable, Besides, I have heard much worse her on yt, especially with this aria.

  • Comment removed

  • I sang that song yesterday!!!!!!!

  • totally spoiled by her accent. She should learn italian if she wants to go anywhere in opera.

  • @pliubumas Thanks for your comment. I haven't heard anything about Becky wanting to become an opera singer, but this aria, and others, is sung by many people who are not opera singers. I think they help to keep opera alive. As regards accent, when Italian singers sing in English they have a lovely Italian accent.

  • porpora is the best

  • bit nasal, badly controlled vibrato and inaccurate italian

  • lascia che io pianga..... for the italian TEXT

  • lets be honest, she is really cute, that good marketing... But being cute, is not a defect man. Well, it is an essential quality in our age you know

  • troppo stars and stripes... versione inno americano...

  • Beautiful song and voice.*****

  • I think of all versions, Becky Jane Taylor and Magdalena Kozena have made me feel the grief of loss with their vocal interpretation of this song, tehcnique and emotions are hard to combine and both have done their best by making me tear up =)

  • absolutely beautiful..like an angel..Thx

  • she is sooooo amazing now when she was 10 i was like ahh shes not that good NOW SHES AWESOME!!!!! =D

  • Es una versión diferente a todas las que había escuchado, es hermosa! Bravo

  • Comment removed

  • She's amazing. Why did she stop recording?

  • Ceeelineee. She is now about halfway through her final year at university. Becky then plans to return to her singing career. So, 2010 could be her big year..

  • Thanks. What is she studying?

  • Ceeelineee She is studying History.

  • wow, she's not just beautiful but talented and pretty famous.

  • what a beautiful future she has in front of her.

  • Non è una voce completa, è mezza impostata, continua a impegnarti, studiare, ma non è male, è una buona interpretazione!

  • it not a good interpretation

  • It's not. I don't like the brass. Strings are essential for this song.

I was going to write it was good either way, just not interpreted the way I wanted it. But as I was typing this, i heard that totally inappropriate belch at 2:15. What was that? The note works since she is hitting the 5th of the dominant chord (A7 in her key of Dmaj), but still.

  • no1use You are right about the strings, but this was a brass band concert where 2 singers were invited to perform. The other singer was Alfie Boe.

I'm not sure what you heard at 2:15 but , unlike CDs, clips on YouTube do not play without fault every time.

  • she's okay @ singing. its just that she sings operaish music and it makes her sound not as good as she could b. But hey i hate opera music anyway so.........

  • I prefer Bartoli's version....but still very nice....

  • her voice sounds like someone of 45

  • only with this song though

  • Becky Taylor is one of today's true vocal prodigies. She is a treasure, and she is just getting started.

  • Is this from one of her albums? If so which one?

  • This is for immature0916: I went to your site, and just as I expected there was NOTHING there.

  • I personally prefer Jaroussky and Radu Marian, but this is very beautiful.

  • ANGEL!!!

  • what language is this ?

  • This is Italian.

  • thanx :)

  • Why does she sound so old. This is a legacy opera training issue that sadly we won't see the end of until people stop reading less and listening more.

  • Sounds like she is saying "moi" (mw-ah) and not "mia"??

  • operagirl81 She is singing " la cruda sorte".

  • Not SERIOUS. It's FAKE.

  • koushukei This is an audio recording of Becky Jane Taylor in concert at Huddersfield Town Hall with brass band accompaniment. Why did you think it was a FAKE?

  • Hi Bish29. I'm JPNs. sorry my poor English. Her voice sounds so poor and there's no AGOGIK. Pronunciatoin is auwul Latin. Unsuitable classical Aria.

  • what's agogik? the language is italian........and as a native speaker I'm telling you it's pretty good for an English speaker...

  • Agogik? Variation in Tempo.

  • Dulcicanto r-try to do it at least as she does than criticize , ok?the voice is really amazing,a real phenomenon.I wish her a lot of success!

  • Ew, she's awful. I don't like her voice or her version of this aria. Yikes.

  • ummm the MIA is bugggging me to no end.... darling its mI:a

  • singerbful What does MIA mean?

  • the actual lyrics are lascia ch'ia pianga, mia cruda sorte, e che sospiri, la liberta

    mia means my or mine

  • sairamnagarajan You are right. many singers do sing the words "mia cruda sorte", but Becky is singing "la cruda sorte" as sung in the movie Farinelli and also as sung by Sarah Brightman and many others. You can hear a teacher giving the pronunciation of lyrics if you copy and paste /watch?v=Wsr9704BUXM; into You Tube search.

  • She does have a great voice and talent. She just needs to take pronunciation studies.

  • sounds a little too much like a popsong for my taste.

  • wonderful singer, pronunciation is a little faulty.=P

  • she sounds great :)

i miss singing as a mezzo in my high school choir, we should of sang something like this its so pretty

  • wacala

  • Comment removed

  • I'm a mezzo soprano and I sing this song as well. Ms. Taylor here does an excellent job singing this song, in my opinion. Perhaps the beginning shouldn't be as rushed (or maybe my ears decieved me, who knows), it sounded fantastic, considering this song is not meant for soprano. But hey, La Habañera is for mezzo soprano and Maria Callus (a soprano) sang it many times to perfection. Well done, Ms. Taylor. You have great talent.

  • Italian FAIL

  • beautiful voice, but she needs to have more selfrespect and respect for music specially opera. She should stay in musical only, this music belongs to opera singers...she is not. please don't mistreat this music no more I beg you!!

  • ludomar999 This lovely aria would be one of the popular songs of its day, sung by people as they went about their daily routines. You dont have to be an opera singer to sing these songs. If you disagree, please prove me wrong by naming someone who never sang an operatic aria before becoming a solo opera singer. You should not have said that Becky should have more selfrespect. You have no right to tell people what they should or should not sing.

  • lol she can sing whatever she wants =p

  • Becky Jane Taylor is an English soprano who has made 3 albums, made television appearances all over the world, performed in outdoor and indoor concerts including 3 shows at the Royal Albert Hall where, on one occasion, she met HRH Prince Charles. She also appeared as young Eponine in 'Les Miserables' in London when she was 7 years of age. Born June 29th 1988.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR LIFE? ...

  • Non mi piace anche. La voce e abbastanza bene per musical theatre o la musica populare, ma non per l'opera.

    Carina ragazza, anche.

  • Belcore14 But she is singing in a musical theatre not an opera. Many operatic arias are sung out of context. Pavarotti sang Nessun dorma to introduce a football competition.

  • Sono d'accordo.

  • Bish29: Thank you. Ah she went back to complete her education. I'm glad she did that. I followed her when she was young and she was amazing. She has grown into a beautiful young woman and she has a beautiful voice too. I'm waiting to hear more from her. Wish her all the best.

  • Bish29: By the way, Almirena is eventually freed and reunited with Rinaldo.

  • Bish29: Her Italian is not perfect but she performs the aria as Handel meant it to be. She is the prisoner Almirena weeping her fate and crying for liberty. Lascia ch'io pianga mia cruda sorte, e che sospiri la libertà. "Let we weep my cruel fate and let me sigh for liberty".

  • Bish29: Forgive me, I mean Becky.

  • YT102008 Becky is just starting her last year at university. She plans to re-establish her music career when she graduates.

  • Bish29: What is Vicky doing today? There is very little current stuff of her today. Has she stopped singing?

  • Grotesco y vulgar.

  • sing like an angel, she make me feel with biger soul

  • i think u ment to type then age 10 instead of 19.

  • I have just uploaded the song "The Bluebird" in which Becky sings a duet with herself. It is really well arranged and can be found by searching You Tube for Becky Jane Taylor, or Bish29. Listen carefully.

  • its extremely hard to believe that this is a 19 year old singing, it sounds like a 40 year old, shes amazing, but this genre doesn't really appeal to me, but you can't deny that she has talent.

  • I think people who criticize he singing must be jealous. She IS very good and does have an Operatic voice.

  • for nothing ... if you upload a video and makes it public should be subject to criticize people who know and are critical to focus on one genre does not sing but speaks very badly wrong and has no voice or technique educated enough to sing an aria ....

  • People who make comments, saying they think she is good, need not be criticized for thinking she is good.

  • YVETTE2470 You must understand that because Becky is English she will not be able to pronounce all the words exactly as an Italian singer would. When Italian singers sing in English, they do not pronounce all the words the same as an English singer would, but I enjoy their singing and would never criticize them.

  • independent of its origin the diction must be perfect ... not to say that his pronunciation is like an Italian, when you hear a Japanese speaking Spanish, pronounces it perfect so it is obvious that is not Latin ... my English is not very good ...

  • You said, "la cruda sorteeeeee NO sortiiii --------e cheeeeeeee sospiri NO e chiiii", but, to me, she sounded the way you say she should, but you are used to putting more emphasis on the 'eeeee'. She was singing this aria in a concert, not an opera. Many sopranos do this, and operatic singers also sing songs from the musicals. You said that your English is not very good, but I am not going to criticize you and say you should not write in English.

  • In my last message I invited you to write in English, though, as you said, your English is not very good. You should be prepared to listen to other people singing in Italian even if the words are not perfect. It's a matter of being polite. I just want to ask you this question. If you had never heard this aria before and did not know the words, would you understand what Becky was singing about?
