What goes hand in hand with win95 and that era is a 14" screen. It's like steak with a glass of redwine. Those things are meant to be enjoyed together.
And with an adventure game on the comp, turning of the light and dreaming away...that time was truely magical and amazing.
The internet is now one community consisting of pretty much the entire globe... it will soon be a world government.. where EVERYTHING is run through the internet, life as we know it will not be reality, but virtual reality. Anything you want or need at any time will be available to you.. we will have figured out a way to combine virtual space with real space, or augmented reality. It will be the FUTURE of 'The Internet'.
I grew up without computers. Gas was 28 cents a gallon and it was pumped by the attendant who took cash only. My dad used to ask for 2 or 5 dollars worth.
if you needed money on the weekend and banks were closed, u could cash a check at a supermarket because there are no ATM invented yet.
Homes were 13 to 15 k. My mom build a brand new home for 13k. this includes land.
cars were 2 grand
so I remember, with a tear in my eye, the days of no computers, YET
Retrotech is really fun when you put your heart in it. I got a 19" crt monitor for a buck on ebay and had a 686 i403tx given to me and I found all the drivers on the internet for the display, soundcard and got an old ethernet card from work plus some SDRAM which it had slots for. I can send email, browse with DOSLYNX, gopher. newsgroups, etc. Also put a 2 GB drive in it to hold all the old software long since mothballed in the garage.
@MisterEvasion Tha's cool. I installed this Windows directly on the hard drive, 40G hdd, 2.00Ghz, 1GB ram, and it worked very well, it even detected my usb mouse! I need some games, do you have some games?
good old days, still remember my 486 DX 33Mhz running win 3.11, god that OS was horrible I had to reinstall windows and edit autoexec.bat so many times it's crazy
the only thing that've changed since this OS to the new windows is that they require more machine to run (and bring compatibility to new soft and hard) but the OS is basically the same...
i am amazed ith dos and win 3.11, idk why, i'm 16 y old, but its, sth like more interesting to work in these OSes. Feeling is like "WOW, holy **** you cant compare this and XP, but people were amazed with those like with win7 now"
Windows for workgroups was amazing because of the built in networking features, but Windows 3.11 was one of the most stable versions of Windows ever. But years before plug and play, no task was more frustrating than trying to setup an ISA Sound Blaster Card with CD controller.. interrupts always conflicting with modem, etc. What a nightmare.
wow there is almost a tear running down my face, and i got chills looking at this. I'm 28 yrs old but I remember my first pc was a 386, then i go a 486 with windows 3.11. That was probably 15 yrs ago. My goodness, I dont know why but this is really breaking tears to my eyes. I think its because it shows me how many years have passed, how i've aged practically overnight. OK i'm reading too much into it, but i'm serious. I remember my first 100mb hard drive, i was soooo excited, it cost like $300
well, my story is same like you, i was studied in a 386 machine, and i was learned MS-DOS and win 3.11 i had 16 y.o. around... and.. yeah, a tear run down in my face also. my first computer was a 486dx 100MHZ the fastest in this time (an airplane he he), i was very excited learning the MS-DOS commands and the metacommands in windows, i remember the wonder when appear pentium and win95 (we will know that be a big thrash he he, bout not in this time) the wonder years hehe.
@sanjose21ca hey man there are groups of people who still build and use old dos machines to this day. check out vogons.zetafleet one of the many sites.
@sanjose21ca I am 29 I feel you man. I remember learning about DOS. having to load about 10 disk to get it installed. My pc came with microsoft sound bits from movies. Mine had a 1 Gig of memory. I remember my couzan saying you will never fill that thing up..
@reesemitchell I remember my Amstrad PC 1512 - one 5 1/4 inch floppy drive and no hard drive. Then I bought a hard drive card which you slotted inside the machine - it was 32 Mb and at the time I thought it was a huge amount of disk space.
@sanjose21ca Could it be that you've "aged practically overnight" because of all the PC use? :D Seriously though, I can understand what you say, every generation has to deal with technological change, the world moves under one's feet, so to speak. That's not a new thing. You gotta roll with it. :)
Joyful memories abound when I got my first 486 with Windows 3.11FWG preloaded. If anything, I miss the simplicity of it all. DOS/Windows just worked back then and bugs were simple enough to fix yourself.
cool i did that....laptop can take floppies only, any clue how i can get the torrent onto floppies or any other way to get the torrent into this laptop?
My first computer had 3.11 and the feeling of connecting to the internet for the first time was quite the thriller. I am in need of the 3.11 install diskettes to resurrect music sequences I composed, if anyone has them please let me know!
go to google and type in windows 3.11 install disks torrent and you can get those around 5 mins including ms-dos 6.2. Thats if you know what torrent is. I recommend utorrent also google for that.
I actually managed to get on the internet with a Windows 3.11 for Workgroups machine, but I had to install an old NIC, the TCP/IP Stack and an old Opera browser... Took some time, but it works! But with only 8MBs of RAM, surfing is dreadfully slow and I can't install flash on it...
- When you install win from a CDROM or Hard drive, it wouldn't let you put the company's name, that doesn't happen when you install it from the 5.25, 1.2MB floppies.
- Pretty slow installation, try to install it in real DOS and it will fly.
This takes me WAY WAY BACK! My first PC was a Windows 3.1 OS. I really only used it for games but it also fueled my desire to learn the hardware of PC's. MMMmmm... old 5 1/2" floppys, lol mine had an 8x CD-ROM (that was UBERLUCKY back then), ISA Slots HA HA HA! I was introduced to my first PC games...
