I always have to laugh at guys who talk about "chop problems" and "doubling problems". Doc played sax as well as trumpet (cornet, originally) and sounded great on both!
To play with Bell Upright like that is very TOUGH...Because the Trumpet condensation comes down the lead pipe and moves opposite...Doc Cheatham had the proper control of that...SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!!
To all of Wynton's nay sayers: Skane gave the utmost respect to Doc while still sounding amazing. There was none of the arrogance that he is so often accused of.
yeah, Wynton could of played much more complex licks, or more showy. but I love the fact that he kept it traditional and used a lot of traditional licks to blend with doc. but Doc is the king of this, you can't compare only contrast.
Doc's vocals were also great. If the date on this clip is accurate, he would have been 92 at the time. He was great to the very end, two years later. (Worst toupee in jazz history, though. I kinda suspect he wore it as a goof.)
And it was a pleasure hearing Wynton playing along in style, not trying to overshadow or outdo the Old Man.
Fantastisch. Wat een trompettist. Heerlijk om naar hem ten luisteren. Wie hem niet kent, mist een boel.Luister ook naar zijn beroemde nummer :"My little girl".
Oh man..this is amazing! Thanks for the post! Doc was increidble....many people don't know that he played many a great trumpet solos for Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz in the late 70s and 80s!
I don't remember, I'll check my video library. It's a great pleasure to hear the grandson of a legend like Mr. Doc Cheatham follow in his grandfathers footsteps. Keep up the good work, BRAVO!
I first came in contact with this legends music from the early Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz recordings from the 60's. He also recorded latin music, he was a virtuoso. Try to check out those recordings, tunes like "Cabo E", "Pancho Cristal", "Mr. Trumpet Man" and others. Doc was great in those tunes.
With a rhythm section like that I can solo aaaaaaaaaaall day and never get bored nor run out of ideas! Those bass lines are mmm mmm mmm.

Ilove Doc and Wynton. The way Wynton can play just about any style is wonderful. Doc was a true showman. Great video.

That is in response to boricuajazz's comment that Doc played with tremendous feeling, just like Louis Armstrong.

I'd say Wynton got piped!
reddwarf1980 3 years ago
I'm sure Wynton would agree. But I don't think that's what this moment was about. Doc wasn't like that. He had a great spirit.

Mr. Doc Cheatham was the man! He played with so much heart his instrument, just like the great Louis Armstrong.
