My grandfather from County Kilkenny told me the irish dance that way because the Brits (he called them something else) wouldn't let them dance with their hands, but not everything he said was true.
He's right. A really good dancer's top half wouldn't move at all but the bottom half would be going gangbusters. It was another way for the Irish to spit in the eye of the brits.
@johnnyboync1 bloody right; [it's dancing & drinking music if ever I heard it]. the audience in this vid is clearly made up of the kind of people that think clapping in unison whilst sitting down is what makes for a good night out.

I followed Tim O'Brien for many years in Hot Rize. This is a nice change of pace and shows his outstanding talent. He has an old-time/Irish CD out resulting from the movie Cold Mountain. The CD is excellent.
@gordonchapman52 Yes sir you are for sure right there if it wasnt for the scots and the irish there be no bluegrass,it was them that settled here in Tenn and Kentucky and around about. That made that great music we here now.
Tim O'Brien is a great musician. There's only handful of those in the world. 3 others were there that night. Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and Earl. And the Chieftains...just wow
My taste is different to yours flybydeath. I absolutely love they way he ends the sentences its my favourite version of this song. Im a big fan of the chieftains - check out their collaboration with Sinead O'Connor singing "The Foggy Dew" - 20 out of 10.
The Chieftains always sit down! Even before they became senior citizens.
Saw them a couple years ago and they were a bit cranky with each other on stage. A friend had chauffeured them from the airport and said they were bickering quite a bit after the show. We all get old, but boy, can they still play.
This was the best show with the worst crowd I've ever seen. PBS absolutely blew it with the bunch of wine-and-cheese wet noodles they plopped down to watch this historic concert.
Great music. My 5 kids are starting to learn how to play jigs and reels. Mary Ryan (piano), Eamonn Ryan (Uilliean Pipes), Con-Quinn Ryan (Bodhran), Beth Ryan (Fiddle), and Malcolm Ryan (feadog). My wife and I dance.
hell if you want a comment i'll give ye one...it's typical tim o'brien and chieftain music..IT'S DAMN GOOD..AIN'T GONNA GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS..YEPPP...

An excellent example showing how American music comes directly from the Scots and Irish settlers.
