  • My grandfather from County Kilkenny told me the irish dance that way because the Brits (he called them something else) wouldn't let them dance with their hands, but not everything he said was true.

  • @guyfihi

He's right. A really good dancer's top half wouldn't move at all but the bottom half would be going gangbusters. It was another way for the Irish to spit in the eye of the brits.

  • AWESOME!!!

  • This is so Great to watch at!

  • he looks like mike mills lol

  • the best song about a Washington Metro station.

  • I followed Tim O'Brien for many years in Hot Rize. This is a nice change of pace and shows his outstanding talent. He has an old-time/Irish CD out resulting from the movie Cold Mountain. The CD is excellent.

  • An excellent example showing how American music comes directly from the Scots and Irish settlers.

  • @gordonchapman52 Yes sir you are for sure right there if it wasnt for the scots and the irish there be no bluegrass,it was them that settled here in Tenn and Kentucky and around about. That made that great music we here now.

  • @51567373 Upon that stone may you firmly stand no arguement shall you hear

  • Visit Shady Grove,Fl. General Store...step back in time

  • Finally!

Something China can't 'Knock off'! (lol)

  • @Gillhoolee *lol* ...true :o)

  • Tim O'Brien is a great musician. There's only handful of those in the world. 3 others were there that night. Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and Earl. And the Chieftains...just wow

  • @hawaiiandobroblues I haven't heard of any of those(except the chieftains) :P

  • i want to track down the 4 people who disliked this video and ask them what is wrong with them. how can you not like this?

  • @appalachianangler

My friend, there will always be idiots in this universe.

Let's enjoy the great music and ignore the 4 clowns.

  • I love Tim O'Brien.

  • Music to stay young at heart and as a BALM for the soul...!!!

  • Well, that's just cool. I heard some "Whiskey before Breakfast" in there.

  • Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between Appalachian, Blue Grass, and Irish music. Same heritage.

  • This is really great! American folk music back to our roots.

  • great job!!!

  • Great music! Great dancing!

  • Nach bhfuil na Gaeilge a bheadh acu ach nach bhfuil an iomarca a rá

  • Great but I wish he didn't extend the words at the end while he sings every bloody sentence.

  • @flybydeath Overextension is the American way.

  • @0ldb1ll yeah, like having a bigger one and talking about it alot... :P

  • @flybydeath

My taste is different to yours flybydeath. I absolutely love they way he ends the sentences its my favourite version of this song. Im a big fan of the chieftains - check out their collaboration with Sinead O'Connor singing "The Foggy Dew" - 20 out of 10.

  • @flybydeath

    agreed

  • Tim o'brien is the man , great singer.

  • One of my favorite tunes...

  • Love the ending with Green Fields of America

  • whoo-whee!!if that ain't dance music i don't know

    what is!-great collaboration!!

  • Its traditional for irish musicians to sit down, so there audience sits around them and they aint looking down on them.

  • well good am at peace wi my soul when i sit quiet . and listen to such imspiring music well done i love it and godbless from lancashire england xxxxx

  • Great by any standard!

  • They´re all grumpy old bastards...

... but they´re incredibly skilful... feeling... expression... sentiment...

These oldtimers make me cry for longing home every time I hear them.

I´ll always long for the land where the lassies are the fairest...

  • that's the point of folk music ;)

  • this is my favorite version of this song, the irish touch is remarkable, I love Tims voice, and I love those instruments

  • amin1950:

The Chieftains always sit down! Even before they became senior citizens.

Saw them a couple years ago and they were a bit cranky with each other on stage. A friend had chauffeured them from the airport and said they were bickering quite a bit after the show. We all get old, but boy, can they still play.

  • nice !!!!up the provo's!

  • Nothing beats this!! Awesome! t:) FAV

  • Absolutely brilliant. Perfect in every way..If the whole world worked like this what a world we would have.

  • This was the best show with the worst crowd I've ever seen. PBS absolutely blew it with the bunch of wine-and-cheese wet noodles they plopped down to watch this historic concert.

  • FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC!!!!!

I play Bodhran, guitar and Autoharp. This is the greatest. 10 out of 5

  • Is it the TransAtlantic Session???

  • Probably a precursor to the awesome Transatlantic Sessions.

Chieftains cds: Another Country, Down The Old Plank Road, Further Down The Old Plank Road.

    Exploring transatlantic musical traditions.
