He was invited to the Grammys for his work with ATCQ, but he didn't want to go for the reason of fame, he went straight back to the lab and made more of his infamous beat tapes.

He was a great person from what I've seen, and obviously better producer from what I've heard since the 90's - 09.

I understand what you're saying about Dilla shunning the spotlight, but he always wanted his credit. You should listen to the J Dilla interviews where he was angry at the fact that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis took all the credit for producing the Janet song "Got til it's gone." I understand you're point though.
