@Earthman99999 That's actually Patrick Stewart when he was young (and had hair) lol. I love the show, but man the Cylons are terrible shots, they can't even hit slow moving cars that are all lined up!
@bananaramamark Earthman is right, that actor is Robie Rist who played Cousin Oliver in the Brady Bunch. James Patrick Stewart (no relation to the Brit actor that played Captian Picard) didn't play Dr. Zee until after the pilot episodes, Robie Rist was the first actor to play him. They probably chose him to replace Rist as he was an American child actor that could prodcuce a reasonable british accent (his father is British) so they wouldn't have to dub his voice unlike with Rist.
@bananaramamark Cool, I am surprised I am the only one that responded to the joke too. Yeah, supposedly when they created the direct to video Galactica movie "Conquest of the Earth" they dubbed in an explaination for why Dr. Zee's host actor changed but I cannot find that reason anywhere on the net. Not even Battlestar Wiki has a cogent explaination in their Dr. Zee page.
@handpratze They are base stars... TO be exact, ADVANCED BASE STARS!!! DUN DUN DUN.... But, if they don't have the backdoor hack? I'm sure we're safe... Oh wait, we don't have anything besides F-15s... Does this mean Lord Obama has pissed off the Lords of Kobol with his lack or preparations?!?!!?!?!!
@QuinnnMallory It is! This is a scene from the three part opener for Galactica 1980, where Dr. Zee shows what would happen if the people in the Rag Tag fleet openly announced their presence to the people of Earth.
Unless those Raiders have ECM, chaff, and flares, I fail to see why the Air Force, and Naval, and Marine air is not kicking some ass. Raiders don't have force fields like in Independence Day. Galactica 1980 shows two vipers outrunning F-15s, but Earth forces could clearly engage and repel that attack.
what is also funny is when the scene goes to the cylon cockpit, you can see stars and a black sky outside the cylon fighter even though the assault is being conducted in full daylight.
The special effects were horrible back then and they're worse now. Not to mention when they show the cylons in the fightrer we see the starfields to their side not daylight.
Uhhh...every time they cut away from the battle-action to the cylons cock-pit, there's a star-field behing the cylons...but we go back to the action and there's a blue-sky back-drop behing the cylon raiders. It's a good thing that this "re-make/update" didn't get made today! I can just see the studio putting Justin Bieber in a colonial warrior uniform and making him a viper pilot in another cheap attempt to attract female viewers. As if the Bad News Bears Galactica Superkids rip-off wasnt enough!
@MrSchultzstaffel Did the special effects guys drop the ball in real life. Well, no argument there.
But to be fair, the context of this scene in the show, it can be explained that the Colonials were just using this as a simulation of what COULD happen if the Cylons marauded Earth. A rough idea. They weren't aiming for painstaking realsim. They just wanted to get the point across. THat makes the innacuracies forgiveable.
@ReverendSyn Well...all right. I'll let the blue-screen slip-up slide. But by no means is that an excuse for this whole sorry "Galatica 1980" affair! I was so excited at 9 years old when they were bringing my show back...only to see this putrid excuse for a "show" put on in it's place! Where's Apolo and Starbuck? Who are these "Bo and Luke Duke" rip-off's in their place? And why is the epic actor Loren Green taking orders from the odd member out of the Brady Bunch? I'm gonna' puke... =(
the Cylons the Reimangined series of Battlestar Galactica are a lot smarter and meaner than the cylons from the TOS and 1980. if the reimagined Cylons attacked LA that would nuke LA from orbit Leaving little or no chance for Survivors and will not screw around by using their raiders to strafe the civilians in the city.
I Bought Galactica ;1980 at Walmart on July 4th Weekend. I put it on late on a Sunday Night. It was cute and comic Book. It was screaming for Richardf Hatch and Dirk Benedict to Return and it wanted more Mature scripts. Canceling Original Galactica was like canceling Major League Baseball after the First Night .
I swear the kid in Galactica '80 was John Denvers illegit space "love child"!! Half expected him to start singing "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" Bahahahaha!!!
What wimpy weapons those cylon fighters have, and how slowly they move; a couple of F-16s with Vulcan 20mm cannons could smoke 'em all. Galactica 1980... Fake and Gay.
I think what's being missed here is that this represents one of the most fleshed out T V depictions of what an invasion of earth might be like. @LordNecron69 If any alien invaders had weapons that were as weak and as inaccurate as depicted here, it would be the shortest invasion ever. @tyranusfan x2 G-1980 is nothing but canon as far as I'm concerned. Makes you wish they never found Earth. I switched to Buck Rogers and never looked back, although that series did jump the shark during the second season, but Hawk kinda saved it.

I find it funny how the blasts can destroy buildings, but the pavement doesnt get a scratch. Forget building battlestars from titanium or w/e... build them out of asphalt! lol
The Earth footage was taken from Eriwn Allen's 1974's Earthquake with added special effects of added Cylon Raider ships. Oh yeah, scary! But belive it or not,a friend who saw this show of Cylons attacking LA and Earth was scared (BLEEP)less!
I gotta love the old original show. Hates the Sci-Fi Channel remake!
It sort of gives it away how recycled so much of this by the fact that we see views of space outside the Cylon ship's windows, when, in fact, it's bright blue skies outside!
So many geeks must have wet their pants when they saw this. I am amazed how much "Earthquake" got recycled. The biggest question I got is this..... If the alien robots really were so intelligent and if they hated humans so damn much as to kill them, why didn't they just nuke the cities? Was it sort of a nasty little vengance thing where they just had to strafe the humans street by street?
@ScaperSteph Yes!! That chinese punk in there always heckled passersby if you didn't buy any of his shit. Favorite line: The president fukd up...read all about it! God!! Its about time he was evicted!

@Catface91 Shouldn't be too harsh Catface91. I'm sure the SFX dept did the best they could with what limited budget they had. Look at it this way, "Conquest of Earth" (not to mention a hundred other cheesey SciFi flicks) was probably why CGI was created. : )
It's a miracle this looks as good as it does bearing in mind how the sequence was put together. The raiders are taken from the attack on Caprica and various space scenes from the original series. The model mounts are visible because there was never a need to clean up the mattes for shots originally seen with a black background.
An ingenious sequence, imho, though ultimately a cock tease intended to make the series look more exciting in the trailers.
I remember watching this(when it first aired). The effects were horrible, you can see the rod attachment to the model stand in some shots(look for the black tails). And the sizing scale was way off.
@BoydofZINJ True.Sadly,Galactica 1980 didn't have the budget,good stories,good writers-good anything.And what about Dr.Z?,he looked a throw back(or forward)from the sixties.Those shades!But,i watched it any way. Peace out.
i hated galactica 1980 proberbly cus it had bary van dyke in it he he he , he ruined another 80s icon tv show namely airwolf when he took over in season four yet another cancelantion hehehhe, oh and were the fuck did doctor Z come from they never did explane that one ??????
it was really stupid of ABC to include scenes from Earthquake - especially since that move came out like a few years earlier. I guess during those years they were just throwing anything on tv!
In "Galactica 1980", when they finally get to earth, Dr Zee realizes that the "Thirteenth tribe" (us) is technologically backward and would be useless to assist against the Cylons. He constructed this simulation to show the fleet leaders for convincing the fleet to leave earth alone for the time being.
This sequence, and the episode 'Starbuck Returns', were the only worthwhile things aout this horrible series. Great use of stock footage from 'Earthquake', also starring Lorne Greene!
also noticed a continuity gaff. in one shot they showed the cylons blowing a big hole i nthe top of that golf-ball like building. in a later shot it is completely intact. also minutes into the attack and no cylon decided to raze the Hollywood sign! heck in Destroy All Humans! that's the first thing that got blown up! lol
this tells me that the cylons were more interested in testing earth military response and putting on a "shock and awe" show for the earth people.
if they really wanted to do damage they would have blown the hell out of the ventura freeway and collapsed all the skyscrapers. also all shots they fired would have been at full charge. heck one shot hit the windshield of a car and the driver was unharmed! all this demonstrates this wasnt meant to me a serious attack by the cylon forces.
in spite of how Dr Zee presented this mock-up i offer this opinion if this was a "real" attack.
i beleive this was what is commonly called a "snub" attack. this kind of attack is not meant to cause real military damage but more of a method of testing an enemies' capabilities and a hostile way of saying "hello!". the squadron that attacked was rather small for a major invasion. at times the weapons did hardly any damage and they spent alot of times and precious energy firing down the street.
I bet the Cylon pilots are thinking, "Man, this is taking ages. Oooh! Take that news-stand! Nope... still not hitting any cars. Daggit! People are jostly are hard to hit! How long have we been doing this now? Man, I wish we had nukes. That lucky Dean Stockwell." - Also amusing are some scaling issues, as at 1:46 the fighter looks tiny. For all that, the Cylon fighters still look acebest.
Hmmmm....Black model stands visible behind Cylon Raiders at 0:16.

The Cylons are terrible shots.

Maybe they don't need to be accurate. Just cause mass destruction and hysteria. OR just shoot everything and blow shit up.

Does anyone know where to get a copy of the "Conquest of the Earth" movie on DVD?
Ashworth6 2 years ago
I think its only on VHS. I have an old copy of it laying around somewhere. Once I find it, I plan on uploading it to Youtube sometime soon.

Some of the destruction scenes are clips from the 1974 movie "Earthquake".

a bunch of fighters flying through the city, they really aren't doing a lot of damage, what are their guns shooting? Frakking spit wads?
solocitizen 2 years ago
Whenever they show Cylons in their fighters the background is outer space - even when they are attacking LA in broad daylight!

it was really stupid of ABC to include scenes from Earthquake - especially since that move came out like a few years earlier. I guess during those years they were just throwing anything on tv!
bolton2121 2 years ago
The movie Earthquake with cylon raders added this deserves a Razzie. The USAF would be hopelessly out classed by the Cylon weapons.

cylons attacked modern earth in the original?
bjornjoseph 2 years ago
In "Galactica 1980", when they finally get to earth, Dr Zee realizes that the "Thirteenth tribe" (us) is technologically backward and would be useless to assist against the Cylons. He constructed this simulation to show the fleet leaders for convincing the fleet to leave earth alone for the time being.

no nukes?.........

Where is the United States Airforce? ^^

In a real attack like this, the American government would take very little effort in defending their people.

This sequence, and the episode 'Starbuck Returns', were the only worthwhile things aout this horrible series. Great use of stock footage from 'Earthquake', also starring Lorne Greene!
akaflint10 3 years ago
Too bad they didn't use any of his "Earthquake" scenes. It would have been hilarious! Hey, Commander, it's a long, lost cousin from the 13th tribe!

also noticed a continuity gaff. in one shot they showed the cylons blowing a big hole i nthe top of that golf-ball like building. in a later shot it is completely intact. also minutes into the attack and no cylon decided to raze the Hollywood sign! heck in Destroy All Humans! that's the first thing that got blown up! lol
allegretto2500 3 years ago
Heh yep. That's the Cinerama dome by the way.

this tells me that the cylons were more interested in testing earth military response and putting on a "shock and awe" show for the earth people.
if they really wanted to do damage they would have blown the hell out of the ventura freeway and collapsed all the skyscrapers. also all shots they fired would have been at full charge. heck one shot hit the windshield of a car and the driver was unharmed! all this demonstrates this wasnt meant to me a serious attack by the cylon forces.
allegretto2500 3 years ago
in spite of how Dr Zee presented this mock-up i offer this opinion if this was a "real" attack.
i beleive this was what is commonly called a "snub" attack. this kind of attack is not meant to cause real military damage but more of a method of testing an enemies' capabilities and a hostile way of saying "hello!". the squadron that attacked was rather small for a major invasion. at times the weapons did hardly any damage and they spent alot of times and precious energy firing down the street.
allegretto2500 3 years ago
Would've been better if they brought back Starbuck and Apollo!
