  • Take the snare down! Ffs

  • The speaker was buzzing. i have the full recording of the show. not anyones fault

  • this was recorded with that thing kevin had in home alone 2

  • take that fuckin snare off asshole drummer :D

  • I don't think his voice suits the song.

  • nice try, but as much as I'd like to believe it. That's not Elliott Smith.

  • @Wilcofan1121 April 1st, 2003. Detroit Bar, Costa Mesa, CA.

  • @YukonGoldenBoy sir, you've just made my day.

  • Elliott Smith & Built to Spill? My head just exploded.

  • i think the drums sounds cool just saying

  • and will someone teach this drummer how to turn off his snares during the quiet parts, fuck

  • wow this exists, awesome

  • THIS IS NOT ELLIOTT SMITH. FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE

  • @jasonkise

    Yes it is.

Elliott gave some awful performances during the worst of his alcoholism/drug addictions. This was probably one of them,

  • Elliott Smith is among the most overrated musicians ever. Wow, vibrato. What a fucking genius.

  • @spacefaget stop trolling and make some friends.

  • @thatwalrusguy stop crying and start listening to someone other than elliott smith

  • @spacefaget haters gonna hate.

  • @thatwalrusguy aka what someone says when they know a hater has a point.

  • shame the drums came in....

  • @pluginwar yeah seriosly he sounds like hes playing on chairs and sheet rock

  • FAKER!

  • the truth is that elliott was....I have a great deal to say on that matter, but, we have to leave and follow. Music is an unbelievable force. Those that tell you opposite are selling you something.

  • Everybody has bad days. Elliot was no different. Unfortunately, musicians that play music for a living don't get the luxury of not playing even when they are having a bad day/really really high.

  • such a great song.

  • To be fair, this was recorded at the really low point of his career, before his death. Anyone who's seen him live will tell you that when he was on, he was on, and when he was off... well, it's still a live show with Elliott Smith. It doesn't get any better than that.

  • Great Job Man!

  • you can hear the snare rattlin'

  • heartbreaking

  • Dammit. This is one of my favourite songs and one of my favourite artists COMBINED! AWESOME.

  • everyone covers this song,

    I swear to god,

    everyone.

  • @IKillLittlegirls It's Elliott Smith. He can cover whatever he wants to!

  • Well we'll just have to ask da myth buster, maybe they'll do it on the next season cause it's getting kinda old lol and I had I friend RIP who hung him self with a belt in the closet and that sounds just as hard to do with no noose

  • i like it...it's raw

  • yeah this is pretty bad, but i do understand that the audio blows

  • Not the great mans best cover. Hope built to spill fans don't judge him just on this. It would have sounded better live too.

  • theres a difference between a bad recording and not doing it right....getbiggerP and sdrink need a relisten

  • i loved elliot smith and love built to spill but this just plain sucks.

  • FOR REAL! the intro is really shaky, elliot smith sounds soooooo much better, this sounds like some youtuber in his home studio trying to sound that him. It does get better in the middle though. too bad he can't re-record it, suicide is never the answer.

  • @athomestudios you don't even know what really happened to him.. it's humanly IMPOSSIBLE to stab yourself in the heart, pull the knife back out and do it again. i doubt he killed himself. but if he did, he'd probably be the only person ever capable of stabbing himself in the heart more than once. if he really did that ..kudos to him i guess for being that extreme, but, it's unlikely. i feel that ppl assumed it was suicide cos of how sensitive he was and how sad he seemed. i believed it too..

  • @athomestudios The police didn't declare it to be a suicide. The evidence was inconclusive and his girlfriend at the time acted very strange.

  • @athomestudios damn i did not expect you to throw that suicide reference in there at the end

  • @athomestudios caca

  • @athomestudios unless the question is "What is the proper name for killing yourself?" HAH! But honestly his death was very unfortunate, though some may maintain that it was actually a homicide, doesn't make the end result any better.

  • @sdrinksw i'd say you plainly suck

  • one of the best songs ever, covered by one the greatest.

    Perfect.

  • i agree!! Great cover!!

  • i just came

  • Two of my favorite artists...... I'm hypnotized.

  • This is so amazing.

I adore elliott smith, and built to spill is an incredible band.

This is like awesomeland for me ♥

  • Is this real?

  • I need a car you need a guide you need some map

If I don't die or worse I'm gonna need a nap. At best I'll be asleep when you get back...

  • who needs a map

  • <3

    and fuck youtube

  • Elliot covered this because one of the members of heatmiser played later with quasi, and contributes to built to spill, ie, friend of the band. Personally, i think he does a great job.

  • lovely

  • I love this. Not only because Elliot Smith and BtS make everything shiney for me...but I love the honest natural strain of his voice here. This makes me happy inside.:D

  • Good songwriters write to their own strengths, and Elliott has different strengths than Doug M. from BTS. Still, it's a great song, and it's fun to hear E.S. take a shot at it.

  • yeah that's totally elliot. you've never heard him live?

  • nope i nvr have

  • BTS and Elliott Smith are so very dear to me.

  • wow this is great. elliott plus BTS = epicness

  • this sounds awsome. i love both built to spill and elliott

  • This is unbelievable.

Elliott Smith is my favourite artist of all-time, and Built to Spill is my second fave band of all-time. "Car" has always been my favorite song by them.

Why didn't I know about this before?

Turns out all the songs Elliott covered are amazing (Thirteen, Because, These Days, Isn't It a Pity, this etc.)

  • He just doesn't sound that good. Elliot always had the sweetest voice, and this one seems strained. I'll take your word for it I guess.

  • well what I meant was that the fact that he covered this song is amazing. And yeah, no matter of this performance, he's the best songwriter ever noticed.

  • That's because it's a dry mic, his studio cd's are layered, chorus and reverb adds a fullness to his voice.

That's what Elliot would sound like sittin right next to you, give or take some tonal quality.

I should know, I'm stuck in the same boat, damned diaphram ain't worth a lick.

  • That doesn't sound like Elliot. Can someone verify that is really him?

  • oh yeah, I can even verify from the "thanks" after the song that it's Elliott.

  • It isn't Elliot, it's Elliott. ;)

  • lolz

  • but it's too late

  • Wow, thanks a lot, I love built to spill, never knew he dug doug martsch.

  • dug doug

  • someone shut the goddam snare off haha. 2 of my favs; BTS and elliott

  • Woah.

I never knew he covered this song!!!

awesome. BTS is one of my fav bands.

  • i miss you elliott

  • so unexpected, so cool.

  • wow.

    just beautiful.

you wouldnt know how to get an audio file of this recording would you?

  • I got this off soulseek.

  • Use Youtube downloader followed by AoA Audio Extractor, download them free

  • @wolfblass88

there is a thing you can use to rip it off of here.

  • @wolfblass88

    disagree sounds like crap

  • Oh my god, I wish I would have known about this sooner.

    Thanks.
