What a very catchy song, all the better for being the original 78 version. It is one of my favourites from those days, I can remember it from childhood. The musical arrangement is very skilful. In those days they did not have the sophisticated equipment as an aid to the final product so it is a testament to the musicians and the vocalist for producing a lovely recording. Frankie Lane's version is not a patch on the original. Thank you for sharing with us.
@gramophoneshane I think most of the record companies have realised that You Tube now affords them some promotion.
Where would anyone these days have heard this song other than here on You Tube.
With songs still in copyright, the more enlightened companies seem to be adding an iTunes link to uploaded clips, giving viewers the opportunity to buy and download the song. Hence, using the new technology to their advantage
@seftonwallet I hope you're right. I've always thought the record companies should be glad of the exposure :)
It's not like many of these uploads are of a high quality that could be pirated either..
WMG seems to be the worst with the copyright crap, although lately I've been getting hit with Sony music. If they ever get on your back about music uploads, there's videos here that show you how to fill in a form that stops them removing anything under copyright.
@seftonwallet Before the dawn of Youtube, I heard this song sung by Anita Mui. I agree, Youtube is the best place to find anything your heart desires & to rediscover old favorites, like catching up with an old friend!
Before Youtube, I have never heard so many versions of this song - Frankie Lane, Zainal Alam, etc. & this gem.
Period pieces, like "Raise the Red Lantern," are also great places to hear great music from a bygone era. One of the wives was a beautiful ol'school opera singer!!
Thank you so much for this video - I have searched for it for literally years as it is my first recollection as a child, of a song I liked. I actually cried when I listened to it again!
hello this is overpoweru this is my other id for youtube, I thank you for the kind words my mom is no longer with us and she passed before frankie laine and she would have been heart broken if she knew he passed . thank you for keeping my moms as well as frankies voice alive through the videos and god bless you
Song first debuted in Shanghai's golden era of the 1930's. Later English lyrics were added and sang by Frankie Lane. The lyrics in Chinese were very different from the English version in contents. Rose was supposed to be Rose Chan- a prominent striptease dancer in Malaya and Singapore in the 1950's. Song is catchy and nostalgic. An ever green song today sung by many singers and well loved by the Chinese for decades.
This is indeed a treasure of a song as well as the wurlitzer that is playing it. however I like the frankie laine version better . I found out that my other was a session singer for brunswick, columbia and decca when she was younger and was one of the backing singer for rose rose I love you for frankie laine. she was the hifemale vocal in the backround.
I searched for what this was for about ten years since I heard it in The Pillow Book-and that has involved trying to sing it to people...Thanks for finally providing the real thing.
What a find-songs and the player--and the quality of sound is great! I am doubly amazed you have both versions (probably more like 2 of 50 versions). Do you have any of that Japanese club music from the late '40's, with steel guitars--very country/western? Or any version of "China Nights" (Shiuo Nano Yuro)?

love this version. I have it on 33, but would love to find the 78 one day.
Im actually surprised EMI hasn't hit you with a copyright claim on this one yet, as my 33 was released by them so they must own the copyright.

I'm very pleased to have been of service. The reasons it's on the jukebox is because it was a favourite on my late mother in law.

Just wonderful, thank you.

Just found your clip.
Its late, I have a glass of wine in hand, and a cold wind blowing outside. Magical clip. Thanks for posting.
I have the same version on 78 by Miss Hue Lee which may compete, but alas, have only a basic tabletop player.

Glad you enjoyed it. I searched for this 78 for quite a long time.
