  • not the smoothest running thing in the world is it?

  • @gwillo1 it wasn't finished then. Know it's got radiator and oil tank

  • Now complete and can be seen at VSCC meetings 2010, 1 tonne of car with 300 HP, check Youtube for Darracq and Walker. It is now ROAD LEGAL!!!!!. Yes, you read that correctly.

  • Is that Ena Sharples in the background at 5:44 ?

Actually Im suprised a 25 litre engine would even fire being fed by those 2 little SU Carbs

  • what a beauty.

  • Ya know as enlightened as all of you fools are trying to sound on automotive technology/history you'd think someone wouldve mentioned how impressive and unique it was that this engine is an overhead valve setup. That configuration wasn't offered by ford until 1954. Pretty impressive for a 1906. Too bad a steemer blew this things doors off : P

  • 200bhp. And before you take the wee-wee, remember that this was in 1905. And this car killed four mechanics.

  • Anyone have a idea of the power of this motor in HP??? Tank´s

  • Eh, those people were crasy...

  • wow! awesome motor!

lol V8's look funny without a valley cover intake setup.

  • They are running this engine without a radiator or coolant which is not a terribly bright idea unless it is aircooled.I am not familiar with this engine, they seem to be not knowing what they are doing and it appears that this engine needs an overhaul or serious attention before they blow it up

  • lmao at ford

  • OMG,Hey guys,,this is [whats left ]of the original car that raced on Daytona-Ormund, Florida,1905-06 I think,,,,2 years later,[1907] Glenn Curtiss set a motorcycle record of 137mph on a 250cid V-8 motorcycle,,now at Smithsonian,,NOW for kickkers,I believe the race rule was" anything goes,,as long as it weighs less than a ton [ metrick ] [ 2204lbs],To race at Daytona it would have gone across the scale,,Dont take these pioneers litely,,Reed up on Hemery,,,and you'll never forget him,,Cheers,Ben

  • The rocker arms look like they are all doing they're own thing without any rhyme or reason. More random rather than actual timed operation.

  • I was intensively looking for updates as this project evolved. Great stuff.

For fun: word "darra" means in finnish (slang) language very bad and shaky hangover. :D

  • is that belt comeing from of cam to start it?

  • thats sick as

  • that must be a huge grind on that cam..lump.lump.lump...shame you couldn't get a holley and a 6/71 back then...lol.

  • La bete Francaise.

  • That's cool, but, my neighbors Ford F150 sounds and smokes just like that.

  • Thats ford for ya... lol

  • how much hp to max rpm did this baby put out??

  • Let me assure you, that is a 25 litre engine, it may be smaller than that ford motor u mentioned, but there isnt as much metal around the bores as u think, ive seen a Hispano Suiza 18L car do the quarter mile down here at the geelong speed trials, sounded just as good, and i got to see it pu close, and it was alot small than this car's engine

  • Wow, how much is that worth? I would have to guess well over a million at barret Jackson

  • I'm surprised at the claimed size of this engine. (25 litres) Was just looking at a picture of an IHRA race motor of 815 cubic inches (Ford) and at half the displacement, it was twice the physical size. You gotta have big pistons and a long stroke to get 25 litres. instead of 107 the IHRA car ran 214 mph in only 1/4 mile. Yeah! Progress.

  • However...doing the math: a 170 mm piston (6.7 inches) and a 140 mm stroke (5.5 inches) by the formula Bore X bore X stroke X .7854 X (number of cyl) 8 equals 1551 cubic inches! or...the claimed 25 litres. And only 200 hp! A NHRA Top Fuel motor (500 cubic inches) can put out 8500 hp and go over 325 mph in a standing start 1/4 mile.

  • Amazing how far mechanical and fuel technologies, as well as our understanding of them, have come, isn't it?

  • not in 1905 they didn't

  • Long stroke, cast crank rods, pistons, and imprefect balancing means that this can't run at NHRA top fuel engine speeds. Plus you have to consider that they are running nitromethane fuel at suipidly high compression ratios with over 50 PSI of boost on top of that. NHRA motors are the steroid freaks of the engine world.

  • Sounds like pure evil :D I LOVE it

  • Damn! That's cool. It sounds like my lawnmower...

  • LOL, I love it how when it starts it almost twists itself out of the car.

  • not for 1905.

  • spirfire engine or something?

    sounds like a airplane.

  • Thats amazing. I wouldent take it over 30kays.lol

  • Astonishing how far the automibile has come. Both ends of the spectrum are amazing.

  • Thats ridiculous, a 25 liter V8

that means each cylinder is over 3 liters, larger than most engines today are in total. or, one cylinder is roughly the equivalent of Two honda 1.8liter I4's and nearly 3 1.3liter mazda rotary's

  • You're an idiot, it's a 1905 engine, you don't understand this? go to hell with your fuckin' ricers

  • I said it to aleks6989 ;)

  • Awesome job guys, what an amazing piece of machinery! I wish that I was there to see it running in the flesh!! Good luck with the rest of it.

  • quality motor ! shame about the shocking carbs and design of the inlet manifold... I would probably go the sacraligeous route and wedge 4 weber 45's on... !!!

  • If all you blokes really want to find out about this car go to the web site that I listed in the description.

Dont make wild guesses about it

  • comon. we wana see it drive and start doing some burnouts !]

  • haha!!! i love seeing the intake valves opening and closing on top of the engine!!!

  • wooooooooaw... Awesome.... THAT's a V8...... congratulations, guys !

  • sounds like a airplane

  • Wow. 3+ liters per jug. :shakes head:

  • hehe engineered properly imagine what a supercharger would do?

  • Neat car!! Although judging by the external size of the engine, there isn't enough room inside that engine for the pistons and stroke to accomodate 1550 cubic inches. In fact its imposible from what I'm seeing in this video. The biggest V8 of that "external size" would probably be around 800+ cubic inches such as that built by Jon Kaase for naturally aspirated prostock style engines. Still awesome though!

  • i agree, seeing a 27 litre rolls royce Merlin engine kind of indicates the physical size required for such a large displacement engine

  • I see a lot of smoke only!!!

  • amazing to see the valves working on on top of the cylinders... i think his maxumum rpm is about 1500-2000rpm ???

all in all maybe 100hp ???

  • Burning a bit of oil there? lol. But seriously, that's so freakin awsome!

  • it is suprisingly quiet while idling... For a 25 liter V8 i mean.

  • wow 25 liters to go 108 mph thats hilarious

  • that was over a hundred years ago

  • but youve gotta think back to when this was built ;) this was the fastes the bigest the everything in its day

  • beautiful, thank you very much.

  • Yes, PLEASE let me do over 100 mph in that!

  • how much power did it hav?

  • it's a coffin with wheels and engine.... lol

  • 25 litre! wottttt!

  • Excellent video! I just bought a V8 car art poster from cartech49 dot gr. Great fun art for my garage wall!

  • id like to see that in a 32 ford

  • Shame on you. They did have SU carburettors in 05.

  • Since it smokes so heavily I assume it has a total loss lubrication system.

I guess there's water in the block but no radiator necessary for a short run. The steam escapes from those vents.

108 mph with such basic technology available at the time.

Did they use salt flats or a beach for the record attempt in 1905?

Take her to Bonneville and let her loose!

  • Wow. You know close to nothing but that in itself isn't a bad thing. What makes your post bad is that you posted it. Research how things work or at least ASk someone for input instead of making blind guesses.

  • A rubber band to start it, well even a 102 year old car needs some help to get turned over. good job on raising the dead..

chitty chitty bang bang that's funny

  • r u shittin me awsome looks like chitty chitty bang bang lol SICK

  • i wonder how they got the damn thing started in 1905?

  • they got it going with a hand crank

  • are you sure about that?? the engine seems a bit big for that, even a strong man. The tractor was even struggling to turn it over.

  • well im not positive, im guessing they show the fly wheel and use a motor and belt, thats my guess

  • Originally, it was started using a length of a steel bar, inserted into one of several holes drilled in the perimeter of the flywheel. Exactly the same manner in which antique Holt and Best gas tractors and crawlers were started.

I recommend you go check out the site.

  • Well done!

  • does it ever driv3e?

  • Amazing! (Noticed the number plates... take it on the shopping run!!)

  • Goodness, it almost stalls the tractor out to start that thing!

  • Jesus Christ that thing's beasty :D

  • that thing is MONSTROUS! great job!

  • I wouldn't drive that thing if it went 5 M.P.H

  • What a fantastic machine, a testament to Edwardian engineering! Good work in restoring her engine guys

  • Darracq, the pre-alfa romeo I think

  • Can you imagine the work involved? Also, dig the belt starter!

  • all that smoke! haha

  • Takes guts to go over 100mph in that thing! haha wow

  • no doubt!

  • I believe this is a replica but built to the exact measurements and plans as the original Darracq.

  • this is older than my 1965 mustang

  • Really? what makes you say that?

  • Fascinating

  • thats an awesome engine

  • SU carbs

  • F A N T A S T I C

  • Those carbs look like su:s what are they? Awesome engine by the way...

  • in the days where men were men

  • Imagine driving this thing on a freeway today and overtaking modern cars. The look on people's faces must be quite something to behold.I bet the brakes on the thing is terrible though.

  • The first V8 appeared even BEFORE 1905.Ader in 1903 and Rolls Royce in 1904.Cadillac in 1914.The Darracq reached 120mph (192km/h) in 1905.I say the guy driving and his mechainc must have been crazy to drive that fast in such a flimsy car. Most people had horses in 1905.This car had 200horses and went 3 times as fast as any horse.Scary.Brave men indeed.

  • nice !

  • from the website that i read about this car, many people died on this car, or at least another just like it , they made very few, were all had machined. they had mechanics on board just to keep it running. as far as i can remember like 5 mechanics died on it...

  • this is an old v8?

  • Wow! Fascinating!
