I saw Edlinger climb in Ceuse in the 80s...what a legend! so what if he was a dancer on the rock? watching him climb was pure. he was a vertical ballet dancer to me, and for that he was the model all of us tried to emulate. (granny, anyone??? only french people will get that one! ;-)
Long time and I am still so impressed. I was living in Chamonix at the same time as Patrick was doing his famous climb, I remember Patrick and his mono skies in Les Grand Montages. While I was doing 65 Degree down backside of Monte Blanc
I believe that he was posing when he slipped . In other climbing videos he acts as if dancing, exaggerating the moves unnecessary. In the old days his style was a reference but nowadays it seems unnatural. Not inspiring.

Okay, I am admittedly naive about rock climbing, but I am so impressed by watching this stuff.
Can someone please tell me how many guys have the confidence to climb at these heights and not even use a rope? For the love of all that is sacred, that looks like it would require a mind-set that few have. What a neat ability!
Well, not that many climb at this height AND this difficulty. Plenty climb at a height where a fall would lead to death though. Most usually a few grades easier than their maximum and on rock they are sure is solid. It might help to think of it like this: You drive your car at 90mph along a motorway, it's a very easy thing to do and you don't worry about the tiny chance of a drunk driver/sleepy trucker/blowout sending you spinning into a firey death, its really the same thing with free soloing.
There's a big percentage who free solo who die. I once chatted with a fellow at Dam Cliffs who was free soloing ... he claimed to have had a 12m grounder and lived !
it will always surprise me how most people who search for idols do so witihn a sall range of years... osman, sharma, yeah, they`re great... but read about the ancient guys, the people that started all this, without high-tech material, the pioneers, an you will marvel: cassin, bonnati, buhl, lachenal, rebuffat, o more recentley Lynn Hill or the Pou brothers...
You're a bit unfair. This vid is about twenty five years old, on a non worked "voie" (sorry I do not know the name in English). So free climbling technic has so much evolved since these years, (and Edlinger technic too). So Edlinger was part of the pionners - he stood one of the best free climber for many years - and big respect to those who came after to go higher with the heritage of open paths by the elders.
I went to see the vid about chris sharma on dreamcatcher. Sorry, to see a top level climber on a 9.a is anyway very beautiful, but it cannot be, for my humble opinion, ten times better that any climber who climbs at level 7 with no work for hundred meters with no rope, or even higher levels after work with no rope. You cannot compare climbing with a rope or without, it's two different dimensions. IMHO.
xylol alot of you noobs only know about Dan Osmom(R.I.P.) from youtube but there were and still are lots of great soloist out there. Henry Barber, John Bacher,Peter Croft,Dean Potter, Michael Reardon (R.I.P.) to name a few . Barber is the only one I am aware of that climbed barefoot on occasion. Cool vid I've never seen someone chalk up their feet before!!

Ok Ok so osman did some mad stuff but to be honest watching chris sharma on dream catcher or sonnie trotter on cobra crack is ten times better.
