Good old days...which I never got to experience =( But yeah you don't need to cheat to do the low lvl beat the game trick, just need A LOT of time and patience.
There's opportunities in the early part of the game to get heaps of fire rod (the thing that was giving gilgamesh 700 ish damage), and the rest is just good timing and pure understanding on the system structure of the game. And yeah, it IS pretty damn cool!
