thats what i hate the most. nobody really cares about ww1. they think of the war not being so important. ww2 might have more casualties but the first world war sparked the second in a lot of ways. (when did the last german ww1 veteran die? id like to know.)
Sad thing is they never saw themselves as heroes. They were young kids in the middle of a terrible war. What a waste of human life. Bloody politicians.
maybe that they have lived with the memories the longest and are the last living eyes to judge a world and recognise its flaws..I doubt many of them would have wanted to be called a hero though, just a messenger that has travelled very far. in that way 'heroic', an undying sense of duty to the many they knew and lost to overlook the progression of civility without ignorance to its cost
ww1 is 4gotten and hidden behind ww2. It should be remebered 4 the courage of the men (on both sides) to go over the top 2 fight knowing that there was a gd chance they would die
this is truely amazing. these are the last voices to tell the story..i wish i could meet them and shake there hands and say thank you very much for what they did for us..they dont have long left now and i will be so sad when they are gone and then it will be lost in history for ever...god bless them all.. and god bless the last tommey harry patch
There are no German survivors left, that's why. Instead of the knee jerk politically correct response you should have considered the possibility that there are no German survivors.
Franz Künstler was the last confirmed Central Powers veteran, and he died in May of this year (2008). He wasn't German, though. At the time I write this, only 9 verified veterans remain.
As for World War, I have come to the conclusion that it was the most pointless of wars. There was no "good guy" or "bad guy" in that one, as could certainly be made for the case of Nazis or the Japanese being "bad guys" for atrocities commited on horrific scales. But WW1? Colonies, theft...
is there any one left now???

What makes these guys more heroic than the 65 million that are dead now?

Seems like your historical perspective and warfare reality awareness for WWI remain inexistent in your person.

"Im the only one left..."- Harry Patch
One of the bravest men who ever lived.
The people who fought and died to defend the free world so that people today can live without fear.
Yet 90 years after 'the war to end all wars'was over, there still exists so much hatred in the world.
We will remember them.
