I competely disagree with their view that you cannot beat on a sports or "exotic" car because it wil fail if you do so. Maybe after several hours on a track driving at the limit but not from some random backroad in the alps...
no no no boys, cars are NOT suppose to catch fire. and YES it is a HUGE issue wether you spend 10k or 300k FIRE is FIRE. and FIRE is bad.
Now first think of all the tech created to keep the engine safe, so obviously its not engine per say its something else. And as it sounds its once again GLUE, the same problem Lambo's had. (so much for those who slammed on Lambo)
from what i understand it is some sort of glue that is used to hold on the heat shield catching on fire and spreading rapidly. but look at all of the other fires starting in the engine compartment in other Ferrari's i wonder if its related.
I do know that on some there was a fuel line issue.
toyota recalled floor mats because it "might" interfere with the accelerator pedal, when there were retarded drivers pressing the wrong pedal... they have to take SOME action to help alleviate some of the bad publicity
@rhbjorn Just because the car was recalled, doesn't mean it's not a problem with how you drive the car.
The fires are being caused by the hot exhaust being too close to the underside of the car. Hence why investigators have see the initial start point right where the exhaust meets the underside of the car. This has been an issue on Ferraris and Lamborghinis for quite some time now.
@Davesdefault121 If you're not passing yourself off as an actual officer of the law, then no. If you're pulling people over and attempting to arrest them, you can and will be arrested for impersonation of a police officer.
That's the loophole in the laws around the world that gives Alex and Team Polizei the advantage in the Gumball. He's not pulling people over and attempting to arrest them while impersonating a police officer. He's merely just using his sirens to get people out of the way.
the reason why these cars are going on fire is because theyre driving through city streets and they arent going very fast so not much air cools the engine and the rpms were very high making the engine hot same thing used to happen with the f430
You can keep most cars at the rev limiter for as long as you like and the most likely event is that the car will run out of fuel.
I know Ford test there engines + exhaust in a very hot room continuously at past what would be the rev limiter for not minutes, not hours, not days, not even weeks, but months on end. The exhaust almost becomes molten metal it's that hot. I'd be shocked if Ferrari didn't do similar, so to say you shouldn't race it up the alps is almost idiotic :)
reminds me of the Audi TT, they kept losing control (flipping) at high speed, so they had to recall and put cool spoilers on them. Funnily enough the madness of that makes me want one!
Didn't the Gallardo go through the same problem as the 458 did?
If your driving it down the road and your car catches fire for no apparent reason then there must be a design flaw or engineering failure somewhere. Regardless of make and model of the vehicle. It could be something as simple as a metal polish on a heat shielding that turns out to be flammable and allows a transfer of heat to an unshielded area.
i had a discussion similar to this one with my sister about a month ago. we came to the conclusion that people are stupid. toyota losing credit for the recalls is dumb. people today don't drive like they used to. today people want to be able to change their oil once a year and have cheap parts. so they buy toyota and honda because they are reliable. fact of the matter is that not every car company out there makes bulletproof engines. but fact is that drivers these days don't maintain their cars.
i like that one of those guy finally said that "its the drivers, not the car"
Like Hyundai, Hyundai isn't a bad company, its those that hated before and there are followers and now today, everyone thinks of the same loads of crap. Its the drivers that makes the car run for a long time, if the company did they're part but providing you what you want in the car and its appearnace. Then what the hell should you be complaining about then?
J.F. you are just sleazy enough to be a defense attorney...is the next road testament going to be j.f. defending BP by saying the ocean needs a little oil from time to time, or defending blackwater by saying they have guns you can't expect them not to use it or defending a rapist because the girls dress was to short....I guess jalopnik just invalidated your position on this issue. I guess since you don't have 250k to spend you have a little wiggle, but let me spend 250 and let it catch fire SHIT
I've heard of older F-150s catching fire because of a faulty cruise control switch that would stay on LONG after shutting off the car (I'd only heard of it happening while parked) and burning up the truck and, frequently, the garage and house.
I know of someone who owns a Kia minivan that has, multiple times now, shut off and locked the steering unexpectedly while driving. None of the incidents resulted in a catastrophic crash, but it is a failure. Of course the dealer denies any problems.
@mj20042 I wouldn't really say it's anything to do with electronics. Most of the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Audis burning up is because of the extreme heat coming off of the exhaust.
I know this sounds stupid, but I think supercar manufacturers need to look at exhaust intakes to cool them off and to prevent this from happening. It'll only add a few pounds of ducting and it wouldn't screw up the performance of the engine. You don't need red hot exhaust to be running high horsepower.

And stop idiotic comment about brothers in law flaming ferrari, etc. etc. etc.
It's pityful. Really. Even if it's true, don't say it.
Can't beat on Ferraris, can't stay at high rpm? You serious? That's what they're made to do. To go around race tracks really fast lap after lap and they're not supposed to catch on fire from it.
Ferarri is well known for catching fire - many emails circulating about past models doing this, wonder why only now they are starting to investigate..maybe because the 458 has been a climax for their design team ?
@xaletorren The F430 has displayed a notable engine irradiation problem for early model years. This issue regards an engine-overheating flaw which caused a fire in the engine bay, usually leading to the destruction of the car. The catalyst for the fire is the sustained high-RPM work of the engine. The massive heat exhaust flowing through the exhaust manifold may come in contact to a variety of hoses or oil perspiration which act as the fuel for the combustion.
@XaleTorren@XaleTorren it’s not the first time Ferrari chatches fire out of nowhere. at least a few identical incidents have been documented during the last few years - one in Dubai, Athens, Germany,China - as far back as 2006, I am not knocking the brand, but the occurrence just seems too common.
1. the car costs 250,000+ and comes from a major manufacturer with a warranty
2. regardless of how the car is driven, the bitch caught on fire...FIII-RRRRR
3. the statistics used are wrong...and are not accounting for the amount of miles driven...of those 996 left...probably 97% still have under 2000 miles on them if pushing on them caused it to catch on fire then how many cars are still subject to that danger if they too are pushed hard? 3 words...Products Liability Attorney
i think its poor build quality. i've seen a f430 pass through an intersection at full throttle and heard at least 3 misfires. in essence, ferraris are fast cars when they're still working.
So there is a chance of 1:250 of catching fire, not good odds. Your advice is not to drive it hard? Buy a Honda NSX and rev the nuts of it all day, don't worry, it won't go on fire....
The Firestone tire issue on Ford Explorers was in fact a manufacturer error on Fords part. The tire specs they had asked for were incorect, therefore, the tires were the wrong load range (to high), so the decreased the preasure they wanted in the tires to 26 psi. This caused the tires to overheat and delaminate, causing the Explorer to crash.

If I was mental enough to pay hundereds of thousands for a bright red go-kart that's sold as a sports car, I'd damn sure expect it to be able to put up with a mild thrashing on public roads from a relatively slow simpleton. Too many of these low volume makers expect you to put up with reliability issues that would put a volume maker out of business in weeks, yet charge a fortune and claim to make superb kit. I guess God hates rich idiots.
Hey Alex I know you play Forza and Gran Turismo you should do a road testament on these games. Especially do an episode when Gran Turismo 5 comes out in November.
it's probably just coincidence that the 458 is catching fire. here's something i noticed, a lot of ferrari enzo crashes resulted in the car splitting in two
I respect and understand the videos conclusion about the concept of automotive accidents vs. actual driver error, but I have to say that it is not as though Ferrari is producing Toyota Camry's, I have never seen a marketing campaign from Ferrari that does not imply to the public that our cars are to be driven at a higher limit than every other vehicle you could aspire to own; people shouldn't buy Ferraris to dawdle around in, they are meant to be Driven... HARD!!! Without catching on fire!!!
That whole accident vs collision reflection was done by Jim Kenzie of Motoring 2010
just want to put that out there...
Also, i think the fires are caused by the engine, cars have there engines tested in a lab to figure out the max RPM it can withstand, if Ferrari uses aluminum engines, what makes "Ferrari" aluminum able to withstand 9000 rpm when a koenigsegg V8 only gets to 8000
I think that Ferrari is trying to push the envelop on there engine to the point where its unsafe...
@bojous2kx i know it was sarcasm you stupid fuck. im just saying the fact that you felt compelled to explained it killed the joke. psofa re malaka palio pousta. poutsokefalo
@phantom69oak Actually I read in a british newspaper that the 458 was owned by a Saudi guy that flew the car over so that he could drive it across Europe, he even has a 599 GTO on order, lucky B*****d!!!
fuk the road testament jus make another fast lane daily for the week but have jf host it or sumthin cus this lukemia havin guy wont shut the f**k up ... if i was jf i wud choke his ass till that bald head of his turns blue
i dont give a fuck its my error or anyones i bought the car to beat the fuck out of it thats what its made for that why i would pay all the money for.
kudos to JF, i mean the guy so patiently listens to AR even though AR is just talking for the sake of it. every AR sentence only makes sense when it ends before it it sounds gibberish. AR my man try to get to the point ASAP.
isn't going up in flames something rather "common" for ferraris? i mean, i have seen several 430s and 360s on fire, i'm not really surprised that the 458 is no exception.
@NASTYTHEBOY did you seriously just call them both nerds..? please, for your own good, PLEASE youtube "alex roy gumball 3000," watch the newest porsche 918 spyder spot (both projects either alex or jf were involved in)and kill yourself
The reason why Ferrari 458 Italias go in flames is because they're just too hot to be driven by douchbags. Only the good guys who love the pleasure of driving would drive a ferrari and not end up in flames. Same with other supercars that go on fire.
Can you see the pattern. Crap cars don't go in flames because they're not hot =P
How about everyone shuts the hell up about the fucking show. They know their stuff and they know how to talk to each other so that the viewer understands it. I personally enjoy this segment and dislike Shakedown, just my opinion. ( I do think Leo is the shit though ) But I just think everyone should shut their fucking mouths and listen to what " That bald guy " has to say. Because we can all learn something from him.
@LeoParente Leo by no means am I against you. You BY FAR do the best car reviews and explain everything about cars the best. Just not that into racing :P
i would imagine that ferrari test drove the 458 to the limits sometime but they actually know how to properly drive cars.. the four fires are just because the owners are complete idiots..
COMPLETLEY agree with these guys but theres something about them i dont like... especially alex... hes not a likeable character im sorry and the dialogue goes back and forth too much... if ur gonna tell us your opinion, tell us, dont pretend youre having an argument on camera
of course we don't know yet about the ferrari malfunctions but my 2 cents are, i think its way to easy to attain a drivers license. seriously my test was to go around a block & return to the dmv. & it took me a couple car crashes to REALLY get a feel for a car & learn how to control it.
about the Ford/Firestone issue, When a dealership receives a car from the factory it is standard industry practice for the service department to do a PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection), including tire pressure check and propper correction. So no matter the tire pressure from the factory, if the customer received a vehicle with the wrong tire pressure it is certainly individual human error.
Even Peugeot 908 le mans cars break because of engine problems, so when a couple of ferraris have some issues why is it the end of the world? plus its not like the 458 is the only exotic car to have ever caught fire
I HATE THIS SERIES.......... OK YOU ARE KIDDING.... VW AIR COOLED ENGINES WERE SO OFTEN CATCHING FIRE THAT PEOPLE WOULD KEEP AN EXTINGUISHER IN THE CAR... BUT THEY KEPT MAKING THEM FOR LIKE A ZILLION YEARS. 4 FIRES, THIS IS A HUGE WASTE OF MY VIEWING TIME. SO WHAT IF THEY ARE EXOTICS. WHO THE HELL REALLY CARES
You guys should of mentioned of Lamborghini (Gallardos was it?) setting on fire. That wasn't blown out of proportion, except for Top Gear. But they made a funny comment, it's part of owning a supercar. It's an exhilarating feeling to know your car can combust spontaneously haha.
Anyway, as for design flaws... Didn't Audi have REAL unintended acceleration problem back in the day?
the fourth ferrari was my friend's uncle's, it didnt caught fire.. he sent it to london by emirates airlines and when it arrived to london the warehouse that the airlines put it in cought on fire so the car was destroyed.. the car is from saudi saudi :) (its the yellow 458)
Most early Ferrari car types like the F430 in the beginning had problems with mechanical failure and occured getting flamed. Early 2000's was known for it.
Even Lamborghinis have a tendency to catch fire. In other words mid engine vehicles are more likely to catch fire since... Especially when driving in places with lots of corners while keeping the engine in high revs. Also ferrari and lambos engine compartments probably behave like a green house having a glass top and just a couple of air vents which feed the intakes, the rest is completely closed shut.
@falchard wtf are you talking about. JF and Alex have driven more cars more miles than you could ever even hope to. regardless, this show is not really about driving cars, didn't you notice?
@jjoshuaa I am a driver in the south west. They might drive more cars then me, but I severely doubt more miles unless they do a 300 mile road trip daily.
Yes I did notice them say you shouldn't be driving a car fast anywhere outside a track. So I would assume this show is definetly not about driving cars.
@falchard fair enough. respect to you, driving ~100K miles a year. hope you have a good set of wheels. just know, i have seen alex do 15 hour stints on road trips. and i have timelapse of JF doing a 3 hour stint on 95-south to miami without taking his hands off the wheel even once. they're nuts and deserve respect, even if you don't like them.
@falchard JF Musial works for Porsche (not in a car dealership.. an ACTUAL prestigious position) and Alex was involved in the Gumball 3000... it honestly doesn't get any more badass.
for God's sake, please visit the polizei144 channel and witness for yourself
can you really break a 458 by trying to? i cant break my 91 dodge spirit with 2.5.

Especially do an episode when Gran Turismo 5 comes out in November.

it's probably just coincidence that the 458 is catching fire. here's something i noticed, a lot of ferrari enzo crashes resulted in the car splitting in two
davidmac2007 1 year ago
I respect and understand the videos conclusion about the concept of automotive accidents vs. actual driver error, but I have to say that it is not as though Ferrari is producing Toyota Camry's, I have never seen a marketing campaign from Ferrari that does not imply to the public that our cars are to be driven at a higher limit than every other vehicle you could aspire to own; people shouldn't buy Ferraris to dawdle around in, they are meant to be Driven... HARD!!! Without catching on fire!!!
4fastdrs 1 year ago
That whole accident vs collision reflection was done by Jim Kenzie of Motoring 2010
just want to put that out there...
Also, i think the fires are caused by the engine, cars have there engines tested in a lab to figure out the max RPM it can withstand, if Ferrari uses aluminum engines, what makes "Ferrari" aluminum able to withstand 9000 rpm when a koenigsegg V8 only gets to 8000
I think that Ferrari is trying to push the envelop on there engine to the point where its unsafe...

I personally enjoy this segment and dislike Shakedown, just my opinion. ( I do think Leo is the shit though ) But I just think everyone should shut their fucking mouths and listen to what " That bald guy " has to say. Because we can all learn something from him.

samanbandana 1 year ago
of course we don't know yet about the ferrari malfunctions but my 2 cents are, i think its way to easy to attain a drivers license. seriously my test was to go around a block & return to the dmv. & it took me a couple car crashes to REALLY get a feel for a car & learn how to control it.

Love this show, and all FLD, keep it up.
about the Ford/Firestone issue, When a dealership receives a car from the factory it is standard industry practice for the service department to do a PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection), including tire pressure check and propper correction.

The problem is that the people who buy these cars don't respect it, and don't use it correctly.

Most early Ferrari car types like the F430 in the beginning had problems with mechanical failure and occured getting flamed. Early 2000's was known for it.

Transamstance 1 year ago
Even Lamborghinis have a tendency to catch fire. In other words mid engine vehicles are more likely to catch fire since... Especially when driving in places with lots of corners while keeping the engine in high revs. Also ferrari and lambos engine compartments probably behave like a green house having a glass top and just a couple of air vents which feed the intakes, the rest is completely closed shut.

PinoyZo1 1 year ago
@falchard wtf are you talking about. JF and Alex have driven more cars more miles than you could ever even hope to. regardless, this show is not really about driving cars, didn't you notice?
jjoshuaa 1 year ago
@jjoshuaa I am a driver in the south west. They might drive more cars then me, but I severely doubt more miles unless they do a 300 mile road trip daily.
Yes I did notice them say you shouldn't be driving a car fast anywhere outside a track. So I would assume this show is definetly not about driving cars.
falchard 1 year ago
@falchard fair enough. respect to you, driving ~100K miles a year. hope you have a good set of wheels. just know, i have seen alex do 15 hour stints on road trips. and i have timelapse of JF doing a 3 hour stint on 95-south to miami without taking his hands off the wheel even once. they're nuts and deserve respect, even if you don't like them.
