I was 8 to 12 years old when this series played on Dutch television. Loved it! Still love it, actually, and I have just ordered the DVD collection from British Amazon.
I always knew this song without knowing the exact words, as is often the case with foreign-language songs that we learn as kids. But I'm pretty sure that the lines "Mr. Brown goes off to town ... with his gun" are in the movie, and only the modulation "So watch out ... the bus" were left out.
@camotophat my dad introduced me to this series:) Love this series so much! We rented it from the video shop...wish they had more series like this one!
@mrmagicroundcircle think he was reffering to that early period of the war where russia was still part of the axis powers and america hadn't joined yet :)
Its great on a sunday, when your driving through the country to get to a car boot, and suddenlt this pops up on your ipod. Its just one of those songs you dont skip
I grew up hating this show (and most of England) but listening to it now I am almost brought to tears, ok partly reminiscing about my youth but the lyrics of the song and the tone of voice is so right. Stiff upper lip.
Interesing fact the British Home Guard recievied shipments of US made Model 1917 Enfield rifle chambered in .30-06 round. The problem was the British Home Guard was also equipped with British made Model 1917 Rifles chambered in the .303 round. The guns looked so similiar that there were accidents where someone would put in the wrong caliber round and the rifle would explode.
@lastswordfighter If I remember, they got around it by painting a red band around the stocks of the rifles chambered for .30-06, as an identifying mark.
This song taught me who Hitler was. xD I loved watching Dad's Army when I was about 3 years old (I'm 22 now). And I remember turning round one time during the titles and finally asking "Daddy, who is 'Mr. Hitler'?"
im suprised some one hasnt changed the lyrics to "who do you think you are kidding mr cameron"etc but its a great theme tune, right up there with the greats such as batman.
@machado231097 Old people whith guns maybe But do you realize that the so called dads army was responsible for the postponement of the imminent invasion of these islands in the early days of the war .The old people as you glibly state were a highly trained fighting unit feared throughtout germany and europe during the dark days of the 2nd world war .more so than the much younger sas
@mrmagicroundcircle The invasion of Britain was postponed due to the German failure to win supremacy in the air, not because of the Home Guard. The Home Guard were not highly trained and certainly not feard in Germany. If the Nazis invaded they would have done their part in resistance but it certainly wasn't them who prevented the Germans from invading.
The home guard were not feared throughout europe, neither were they an elite unit. They were trained so they could to swell the army ranks if Britain were invaded, but they were old men and boys, not real soldiers. There was a small elite force trained to conduct a guerrilla war if britain were occupied and to assassinate collaborators and high ranking Nazis, GHQ Auxiliary units, but these were not part of the home guard and were a secret. Having said this i still respect what the Home Guard did
@hitthatperfectbeat well if you studied this at uni you must be very well informed. Suspect grandfather was still suffering from war time conditioning propaganda ect .thanks
@hitthatperfectbeat --- Partly correct. The age limits were 17-65, and in reality many men in their 50's and 60's were turned down, so 'old men and boys' is questionable. Members in their 70's and 80's are folklore. Not real soldiers? Most members born before 1899 (aged 41 or over at the HG's foundation) had military experience, 1914-18 especially. They were not supposed to 'swell the ranks', it was a separate force under territorial command, not divisional unit command.
@sturatcliffe By "not real soldiers" i merely meant that they were not regulars, in the same way as, while respecting what they do and acknowledging their importance, we would not refer to members of the TA as soldiers. "Swell the ranks" i accept is a bit misleading, i did not mean that they would literally be placed into existing units that were depleted, but that they would support regular troops and were not Britain's only territorial defence.
@hitthatperfectbeat --- I take your point, yes. Your TA information is out of date though: 1980's: TA could not serve overseas in peacetime; 1990's: TA could request to be deployed overseas, if their skills were needed; 2000's: TA's are expected to and WILL serve tours in combat zones, no opt-out. Times change.
I still remember as a a very young boy my grandparents taking me and my younger brother to walmington on sea for weekend breaks and grandfather becoming very emotional about his days there as a member of the home guard .Not so lighthearted as shown on the tv comedy show.
My grandfather born in the eastend remembers singing this on the underground during the darkest days of the blitz . Whenever the sereious came on the tv he would often burst into tears . My father would would give him a tenner to go down the pub to help take his mind of the remembered terrors . We dont realize how lucky we are.
@mrmagicroundcircle I'm afraid that your Grandfather was misken as contrary to popular belief this was not a wartime song but written specifically for the sitcome series in the late 1960's.
