There have been many great Carmen's. Whose portrayal is best is subjective. ALL the women here bring something unique to their version of Bizet's gypsy. Different interpretations, different voices, and personalities.Look at the wealth of talent here and who can say who is truly best. We have beeen blessed with so many great singing actresses in this role relax and enjoy the Divas do their thing.
@moghedien13 Very interesting observation! I'm liking this wonderful directing you've just pointed. really shows how powerful and desirous Carmen truly is to those around her, although we see her power come to fruition at the end when she hops up herself and captivates the scene.
@cantanteporsiempre MAria Ewing is the best Carmen ever. Her creativeness takes carmen to a different level. She's not afraid to make carmen too seductive. She feels it rather than acting.
She looks so athletic here. The acting is great, and the singing is superb! And I'm glad that she did not dance. At the time that this film was created, it made sense for her. The next thing you know, she would have become "Grace Bumbry, the dancing mezzo".
Her singing is AMAZING, her voice so rich, luxurious and resonant, and her acting full of eroticism! But yes, it's stupid that she is not really dancing, she seems to be in the background (however, not with her voice! :) )
Yes, but the character she is portraying is supposed to dance, and, being the main character, Carmen is supposed to be in the centre of attention. And I am not saying it is her fault she is not dancing, it has to do with the production. I meant to praise her, not to criticize her! :)
A mezzo? I didn't know that! Are you sure? I'll have to learn more about opera. Anyway, she signed a contract as a mezzo, soprano or whatever NOT as a dancer, or ballarina?
Agreed, except she was signed as a Mezzo at the time, but I totally agree otherwise. Then we didn't know what she was after Aida. But I love Grace the Mezzo. LOL! I come to hear opera singers sing, not do a dance. In most stagings, Carmen isn't dancing. Dancers are.
she is a MEZZO; the bit where she thought was a soprano was in a sense a delusion because she is probably the greatest mezzo who ever lived; thats why shes so amazing; carmen is written for a mezzo not a soprano
I know that. I've sung Carmen before. I was responding to a comment above mine. She in my opinion was a Mezzo, but the point is she did do soprano roles and refused to be called either at one point.
i know but as a professional director thats just a singers craziness; what she was was the worlds greatest mezzo with a good high top like christina aguilera; who i have in mind for a rock version of the piece; grace bumbry is my absolute favorite singer; and i was lucky enough to see the production on film as a small boy of 9
such a strong middle/low. I was sad she switched to soprano roles. Many of her high notes fly upward- she sang sharp on many of the highest notes as a soprano. Always an amazing artist,. The low/middle- so rich and strong. Not swallowed like some mezzos- One of my all time favorite voices...
Her singing is beautiful, but her characterization is only pleasant, and 'pleasant' doesn't fit.
A lot of the problem here is the staging -- stilted and meaningless. Not her fault; just a relic of the stilted times. (1960s?) And, worse, the staging treats her like a curiosity or a bystander instead of the main act.

@aztequedeor Yes, it´s a matter a good taste. Garanca is cooold like the ices of Letonia. Ewing gives the exact dimention to the role, for me.

She sings so softly even though this part has a very different tessitura in every song..
And Grace finds every time new colors and timbres....
