Japan is not accepting of PDA at all compared to american culture. There you must be more reserved and pda is somethign you do in your home or behind closed doors. Not out in the open because that shows indecency or ... um.. makes you look trashy
I've dated Japanese men, currently dating 1. If a Japanese guy is dating a Western girl, he is more willing to bend these "cultural rules" and act differently than they would dating a Japanese girl. The ones I've dated have all been more affectionate in public and more passive (ages 24-32). They are all very shy at 1st and they are not direct about their feelings (even about what kind of food they want to eat). But I find they really enjoy the freedom that comes with dating a Westerner.

If you're guy is to much of a punk to not be able to hold your hand in public even after you explained to him how its BS then get a new dude. Going with the flow is an illusion of harmony. NEVER really telling people how you feel is cowardly not honorable. Japan has made alot of progess in many areas. But when it comes to sexism its so bad I am suprised women can vote.
@Jaiyeson 1) You are an epitome of Western stupidity. Your kind can’t comprehend that there are many ways to express love and affection. Your way is not necessarily a better way. There are plenty of women who care less of holding hands in public. To them, displaying affection in public is rude and tasteless. They are happier if shown warmth/love in privacy. Affection in public has nothing to do with progress of society. You myopic Westerners are incapable to see values in modesty and respect.
@Jaiyeson 2) You must understand Japanese values. Japanese expressions of love are far more refined than those of Westerners. Being at the state of ‘icha-icha’ is simply disgusting. Now who do you think you are to say that Japan made a lot of progress? Feminist movements? No, it is Japanese traditional values that made Japan great. And the root of greatness of Japanese goes back more than two thousand years ago. Western approach is degenerating rather than progressing.
@Jaiyeson 3) Human genders have their own respective functions in this world. Take a hard look at deterioration of family values (unmarried couples with kids, staggering divorce rates) in the whites’ societies. Japanese society functions so much better and smoothers than Western ones. This is partly because both men and women understand their differences and strengths and they know their societal functions. They are happy with their roles. I suggest you learn from Japanese instead of bitching.
This was really helpfull! But my situation was kinda weird... we both were in another country...he is japanese,I'm brasilian and we were on canada...but how can I know that he likes me?? Do they give you a hint or something??
My advice is to make the first move. Japanese people tend to avoid confrontation so he will not make the first move. Showing submissiveness and affection will get his attention very quickly. The biggest thing you have to get past is his shyness. So once you get him to be comfortable around you.... it should be much easier.
