Why are you using the pen tool for such a complex selection? Creating an alpha channel with a combination of levels, dodge and burn would be far quicker and easier. I would bump up the contrast in camera raw before I work on my selection.
yeah it really goes too fast to follow, but maybe it is just a demonstration of this guy's skills in Illustrator. I guess don't use this one if you're trying to go step by step to do this effect.
A lil slow mo would have been nice. This is crazy awesome.
