Could anyone provide an english translation and guide to pronouncing this gorgeous song? I hope to learn Irish but I haven't found the resources yet...
This is a prime example of what is meant when folks say music is a universal language. I don't understand a word they are singing but I still like hearing the song. It takes me to a magical place in my mind and I can picture a small celtic band around a bonfire playing and I want to be right there with them. I do have a scot/Irish bloodline from my mothers side. Perhaps it is that blood that draws me in. I just know I like it and others by Clannad.
For all of you wishing to learn Gaelic; Irish , Scots or Manx-Please use the search engines-as there are classes, tapes, discs, available, (even pronunciation guides) and Welsh, Breton, and Cornish are not Gaelic- But from the P-Celtic branch of Celtic langauges.
I always liked the tune, since I found it in The Armagh Piper's Tin Whistle Tutor in 1975.
It's Gaeilge na Dun na nGall, but the Tune sounds like it's from hAlba, not very far away !!! It's great to hear the words and read the text, as well. For all interested parties, look up "Singing in Irish Gaelic' by Mary McLaughlin (Mel Bay). I've never met the Woman, but she lives just around the Monterey Bay from me, in Santa Cruz, California.
Such nice music! I love how gaelic sounds although I can't undestand a single word! I've tried to follow the lyrics but get completely lost. It's so different the pronunciation from the way it's written that I got lost every time I tried to follow it. It's like you get three or four letters together that are pronounced like a single sound! That killed me! But I'm still crazy about how magic it souds. I'd really like to learn it!!!!
Yes, I think I am going to study physics in Utrecht (Netherlands), and then I will take celtic with it. It's the only place in the Netherlands were you can learn Gaelic or Scottish or Welsh...
Gaelic is such a beautyfull language, so mild and soft... Too bad that is about to be dead cause less and less people are speaking it, prefering to speak in english instead. This language is like the song of a beautyfull maiden who is about to dye cause of the cruelty and indifference of her family and neighbours. I want soo much to learn it! But unfortunately I do not know any one who can teach me.
Замечательная песня.

I almost have a Scottish celtic song down but its really difficult. I wish classes in either Irish or Scottish gaelic were more widely avalible!
