you wrote this, really!? if you were around a long time ago you'd be the one who wrote all the folk standards that people whistle on their way to work. nice job.
Interesting! I like your story! Mine's similar. Same result as to your last paragraph conclusion; but a totally different results as to knowing Jesus wants me ... especially to be that person AND His "friend". As Leader, He set the goals for those following. Leaders set them high. Its my commitment and efforts that let me reach them ... er, it, actually. .. To love others fully.
OMG! Wow, I love the really cleverly written and strong lyrics! The tune is really fab too! I can't see why people would be upset by it. I really appreciate your graceful honesty. I always really love your originals, they are all really fantastic songs and I hope you'll do more! :-) Loadsa love and hugs :-) XXXX
Thanks Ruth - if you mention Jesus in a song that is not a worship song some people will automatically assume you are knocking Christianity. I just like to pre-empt these things.
Hey Tony, your honestly is just so... I don't know how to put it but it's something I really appreciate. It must've been really tough. I suppose ... it just makes me treasure your friendship.
It was all so long ago and time is a great healer. Although it abandoned me, I never really left my Catholicism or faith behind, but it mutated into something totally different. This is kind of what the song is about. Although I say Jesus, Buddah, or Allah, I'm really talking about their Earthly representatives and about personal rther than institutional morality.
"And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits"
Who could doubt the word of our lord JC (John Cleese)?
In my house when I was a child, there was a little yellow 78rpm record with a song titled "If You Don't Go To Sunday School, You Grow Up To Be Bad." I thought it ridiculous when I was 4. Still do.
I can only find it on one site that my security system says has cooties. (Where's Dan Brown when you need him?) If I find a clean version, I'll send it your way.
Good tune Tony. I don't believe God wants us to be dishonest about our relationships with him. In fact, I believe the Bible pretty much supports the view that he would rather you be an honest sinner than a hypocrite. Why else would he say things like, "Come let us reason together" ? Its hard to reason with a hypocrite. Anyway, I always enjoy your work.
Spot on Tony, great song! I have encouraged my kids to make their own minds up about religion. Its all about having faith in yourself, not some ancient doctrine.
I agree with Ken Middleton. Interesting song and also to know some more of your past. My take on "good" is that it is a relative term. Remember Robin Hood was a Prince among thieves. :)
That is my point exactly. The concept of good is not only relative, it is elastic. If you insist that there is an exact definition of what is right and wrong, good and evil, regardless of a persons individual situation or their position in their society, you cause more harm than good. Look at the AIDS epidemic in Africa compounded by the the moral condemnation of contraception by the Catholic church and Islam.
I wouldn't worry about upsetting people. I do it all the time. Great bouncy song with interesting lyrics. I don't agree with much of the content, but that's OK, most people don't agree with me.
As I've said before, the content, meaning and significance of a song, once shared, belongs not to the writer or performer but to the listener.
From my point of view it is not meant to cast aspersions, make accusations or to criticise, merely to express a personal feeling and experience. Hence the disclaimer.
Much of what passes for religion seems to me to be merely human psychology writ large, much of it based on fear. How could a loving God be at the end of that train of thought? Religion shuts and locks the very door you've got to open. At some point you've got to open the door inward and trust what you find there.
I don't know where all that blather came from. I was in an odd mood, I guess, and I regret it if what I wrote sounds dismissive of religion. What I meant to say is how pleased I am to see you writing more songs. This one swept me away and got me thinking, but it also delighted me with its creativity. If there's going to be a gospel of Don, let it be this: "Don heard Tony's song and he saw that it was good. Amen!"
I too was brought up a Christian. When old enough to think for myself, I decided to quit religion altogether. I found a lot of usefull things in the bible, which helped me decide for myself what is right and what is wrong. I feel a much better person for it, even if others disagree with my beliefs.
There is nothing wrong with any religion that a healthy disrespect for those that organise and preach it cannot solve. That sounds very dismissive, but it is meant wholeheartedly. Religious teaching is a good thing and moral guidance is a blessing. Those that seek power, influence and recognition off the back of it are, more often than not, a curse.
I was thinking how different things would have been if you had followed that path- I dont know much about catholocism or what it involves to be a priest, hence the googling- and what you cant have in your life as a result. So I am glad you are here doing this, and have your lovely daughter too. Hope that makes sense ?
I considered being a nun once- (when I was about 10 ). The idea didnt last long !! :)
Tony - Excellent bit of song writing. I have respect for those of faith but sense that organised religion have been abused by the powerful, to be little more than organised crowd control.
No nedd for rebellion - just write songs about it!
Thought provoking stuff Tony...I had a fundamentalist Christian background when younger...and spent years struggling and sometimes still do to maintain a sense of the spiritual without the dogma. The tune you chose is also echoic of one of those children chorus ditties I grew up on...Interesting stuff, a lot of depth here
The idea was for it to sound like a 'happy-clappy' hymn so I'm glad you picked up on that. My childhood hymn books were the Songs of The Spirit series so this is an homage to them in part.
