  • By matching the lineups with out of town games this would have been Wednesday Sept 2, 1964.SF would win 4-0 on a Juan Marichal 4 hitter. He would strike out 9 and walk 0.In the 8th inning Duke Snider would pinch hit for Willie Mays.

  • Shea Stadium was brand new in this footage! Great footage.

  • Awesome! Nice work.

  • wonderful footage. Thanks for sharing. My first game at Shea, I was 8 in 1972. We went to see the Pirates at Shea, so that I could see Clemente play in person. Unfortunately he wasn`t in the lineup that day, and I never got a second chance. What Most struck me upon entering the stadium was how green and vibrant the colors were. Citifield is fine, but Shea will always be my favorite.

  • 1964 mets are funkaaaayyyy

  • Great film footage! My first ever baseball game attended was in 1967-I was nine yrs old. Of course I rooted hard for my Mets... though we ended up losing to the Dodgers that day. Oh well. Still, it was a great time to be a kid!

  • Love my METS !!! Always !!

  • Awesome! Thank you! Here is a baseball trivia question, how many pitchers in teh hall of fame are under 6 feet tall?

    zero!

  • Nice vid. Thank's for posting. Really miss Shea but....WINNINGEST HOMESTAND OF 7 OR MORE GAMES IN 20 YEARS!!!!!!! METSIES, METSIES, METSIES!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love shea!!

  • Its not their fault they sucked so bad. It was the Stadium.

  • Great memories of Shea!

  • I dont care how bad of a season they have, I love the mets.

  • I think this video's fake for 2 reasons:

    - The #7 has no graffiti on it

    - Flushing Bay doesn't look polluted.

  • This is what is missed now with our beloved Mets. There is a sense of innocence from our youth as opposed to the memchandising of today where you are constantly being sold on something or being entertained by the unentertaining (think Pepsi party patrol and that ilk). I remember going to "scheduled" doubleheaders and feeling like it was the perfect day. Thanks for this past blast as I wipe away the proverbial tears.

  • What a wonderful peice of history! My first game at Shea was in 1977 or '78 versus the 'Big Red Machine'. I was 7 or 8 and remmber more than one would think. Thanks for this!

  • Wow.

  • Great video, I got choked up watching it. I remember going to a dodger weekend game around that year,i was a kid, i think it was a double header, and the umpire made a bad call at the plate calling a Met out, and the place went crazy, packed house, everyone waving handkerchiefs, some people throwing things, the umpires stopped the game until it calmed down, does anyone remember that?I also remember Wes Parker was brutally harrassed at first base, I wish someone would remember the date, i cant .

  • Hi Niterider..Ultimate Mets Database has a fan memory entry for April 19, 1968..the fan recalls Jerry Grote being called out at first on a terrible call, killing a Mets rally..the crowd was abusing the 1st base ump and of course Wes Parker played first...the fan claims the Grote play ended the game, but a check of retrosheet shows it more likely occurred in the 7th inning..game was played on a Friday afternoon...perhaps this is what you remember?

  • Excellent footage of the REAL Shea Stadium. That scoreboard was magnificent before all of that blue paint came along.

  • Ah, the old ballbark. Miss it.

  • Roy Mcmillan seemed very unpleasantly surprised when he saw the camera right in his face. It looked like his cap hit the camera, startling him.

  • how long did it take to dig up this footage

  • 45 years, about the same length of time as between Phillies world Series CHampionships

  • Note that scoreboard actually showed pictures of Met players.

  • Great video! Thanks for posting it.

  • ID'ing some of the other players: No. 12 for the Mets is Jesse Gonder and No. 28 is Carlton Willey. The Giants' No. 26 is Chuck Hiller, No. 14 is Jesus Alou and No. 38 is Bob Hendley.

  • I was at the double header against the Giants in May of that year where Game 2 went over 20 innings. I wonder if this is that game??

  • I doubt it....this appears to have been a single night game...note the scoreboard clock...the game was beginning at about 8pm...and if it was a routine game would probably end a little after 10pm...now they begin at 7:05 and run until 10:30

  • Priceless. Thanks for sharing that.

  • Number 41 was Matty Alou, Jesus Alou was number 14

  • Shea was once actually nice. Later it turned into a dump.

  • Lovely little video. Shea had its own charms- it was sleek, well-lit, and the roads and the bay beyond the scoreboard gave you a nice expanisve feel. I mean, you didn't feel boxed in.

So, Dan, who won the game?

  • I had never seen, until now, actual footage of the big TV screen on top of the scoreboard. I think it only worked for a year. Great historical footage. Thanks for posting.

  • Great seeing Shea when it shiny and new.

FYI the Giant doing that funky windup during the warm up at about 2:40 in was Jesus Alou who would later play for t he Mets.

  • Do you know when these home movies are from exactly? In 1964 the Giants game to Shea for a series in May, Aug and Sept. The only thing I can tell is that it was a night game which narrows it down a bit. Couldn't see anything clearly on the scoreboard. Is there any way of knowing?

  • thank you for putting this up. Im gonna miss place deep down.

My mom used to tell me stories about going to games at Shea when my dad was still alive. My mom and Dad witnessed Jim Bunnings perfect game the year this video was filmed.

    Thanks again.

  • I will miss Shea.

  • hey that profector thing worked at one time always wondered what it did i asked my dad and he was right they showed players face on who was up but they shut it down he said after 66 season never worked right

  • Who is the singer and title of this song?

Is it Randy Newman?? Thank you for posting.

  • The singer is. I believe Terry Cashman, who went on to compose a version of this song for each team and a few different eras.

  • I didn't think that projector thingy at the top of the scoreboard ever actually worked, but I guess I was wrong! It's still up there (or at least the remnants of it), and most fans these days have no idea what it is.

    Great stuff! Thanks for sharing!

  • I must say that I will miss Shea when it's gone. Some of my happiest memories are of going there.

  • Was that the historic series that included the 23-inning game?

  • I am pretty sure that this was the Friday of that weekend. I also attended the 23 inning game, second game of a doubleheader, which makes that the longest "day " on major league history.

  • @danhegarty How was your back?

  • Go Mets 08!

  • Its so difficult to veiw Mets games from '62 to '69, on cable Tv they never show them. This is some excellent footage of the soon to be gone Shea Stadium. Looking at it from back then, it was a real no frills ballpark, but then '64 was a simpler time. So many enhancements have been added over the years its an amazing comparison to today. Thanks for posting this video treasure.

  • What an awesome video, thanks for putting it up.. gives me a nostalgic feeling, even though I'm only 21 :p .

  • Yes, night games used to start around 8PM in the good old days, before games lasted 16 hours with 7 pitching changes per inning. Gonna really miss old Shea by the Bay, but it's starting to look like Citigroup may go bankrupt before that new monstrosity gets finished.

  • BTW it looks as if the games started later back then. I looked at the scoreboard clock and it appeared to be 8 PM when the game was about to start. Can anyone confirm this?

  • The games did start later then, probably 8 or 8:05pm

  • Thanks. That's what I figured. Except back then, I'm sure the games went by a lot quicker. Guys didn't step out of the batter's box after every pitch, there weren't as many commercials, etc. The game was probably over by 10:30 at the latest unless it went into extra innings.

  • Funny thing is I always remember people complaining about the games taking too long. I went to the 23 inning Mets Giants game which was the second game of a doubleheader. Ironically I left in the 22inning because I was in high school and had final exams the next day. When I left it was after 11:00pm and I had gotten there around noon to see batting practice. One thing I really miss is being able to see batting and fielding practice for both teams before a game.

  • That's interesting. I guess game length has always been an issue in baseball.

  • games started at 805 in those days until late 70,s

  • That was awesome to watch.

  • This is an excellent video. Brought back a lot of memories. I will miss Shea Stadium.

  • Was Marvelous Marv on that team?

  • Marv played for the Mets in 1962 and briefly in 63 at the Polo Grounds. I saw him play in the Polo Grounds but he never played at Shea.

  • damn shea looks so different wit out da picnic area or the huge tv screen

  • Ah, Shea looked so nice back then, even though i wasnt alive lol.

  • Those were the days, Joe Christopher, Ron Hunt,Roy McMillan, Rod Kahneal and Wes Westrum.

  • As Bob Murphy would say he hits a high fly ball deep to right

  • could be pouring rain bob would look up and say its a beautiful day for a ball gam,e lol

  • Great video!

  • Ah, the taste of the Rheingold...the sound of Lindsay Nelson on someone's transistor...the sight of the orange and blue shingles on the side elevations...those were INDEED the days!

  • In 1974 and 1975 they put the Yankeess Emblem when the Yankees played at shea .

When the Jets played at Shea They had the Mets emblem on the Monitor. They finally put the Jets Emblem during Jets Games.

In 1980 The people at Shea decided to Redo the Top of the scoreboard . In 1986 they redid the top of the scoreboard agian and in 1988 a new scoreboad was installed and a new skyline top was installed on the top but the side pannels was painted bule in 1986.

  • Great footage and beautiful music... well done piece! :)

  • is looks like the 9/2/64 game (according to RetroSheet box score). Most remarkable clips are of the scoreboard, you will

see portraits of the players who are batting in the large square area on the top of the board. This was done only during the '64 season...

  • Went to one of those games in that series with Giants as an 11 yr old for my birthday. It was a Wed nite as I recall & this video may be on that exact night...it's exactly as I remember it except I thought it was late August 64. In those years, a Met vs Dodger or Giant series was a guaranteed full house.

  • The original Shea was beautiful, not the way it looks today! Saw Citi Field today over outfield fence, it can NEVER replace old Shea.

    Video made me cry!

    Thanks for the memories!

  • I played hooky and went to the very first game at Shea....Willie Stargell hit the first homer, for the Bucs. Also got married the day the ball went thru Buckner's legs in 1986...great memories! By the way, I watched that game, especially that great rally by the Mets.

  • wow how old is that camera

  • What a wonderful video.

Shea was a wonderful place. The late 70's and early 80's were not kind to it. It's still recovering from it's mid-80's renovation... Nothing a wrecking ball can't fix!

  • Glad that Shea is going away, hope the Mets can keep it up at Citi field

  • true im going to new york these summer to see the mets

  • Great footage. I saw my very first ballgame at Shea. It was when the Yankees used Shea for two seasons. This footage has the monitor above the scoreboard actually working. That monitor didn't work for years. They finally just put the Mets emblem it it and forgot about it. I'm going to miss Shea. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great vintage footage of the soon to be demolished Shea. I miss the white bordered scoreboard in right, the green fences and the yellow seats. Thanks for sharing.

  • Pretty extraordinary footage. Thanks for posting. If only you had some film of that great old box polka dot exterior of Shea...

  • WOW...my jaw dropped watching this...a truly amazing document, especially with the SF Giants in town also...thanks for uploading.

  • Fantastic, great. Thank you for this. Felt like I was there.

  • wow i remember the yellow box seats as a kid GREAT VIDEO.....LETS GO METS

  • this is an awesome video. I love the first year of shea stadium. It would have been even better if the mets version of Terry Cashman's Talkin Baseball was used.

  • That is a great suggestion. I forgot that there is a version for each team. Thanks.

    Dan

  • Thank you for posting this. I'm too young to remember the 64 mets, but looking at this is great.

  • Shocked no one complemented this vintage footage. Good classic song and I dig the Rheingold beer signs. Got nostalgic for those Manufactuers Hanovers signs from the 80's for some reason.
