Have been watching this video over and over again. Martin HD28V is an excellent guitar and it has a warmer sound. Please excuse me my ignorance, but what are the songs you've been playing ?
When I listen to this video I find that the Martin sounds better. But I tried many D28 and one HD28 and was always disappointed! Lack of dynamic, when you try to play some notes on the top of the neck you hear more the pick on the strings than the sound itself. So I bought an hummingbird!
Maybe Martins are better for light strumming... I personally like more responsive guitars.
Martins are great guitars, but, in my opinion, a good sounding Gibson is unbeatable. It´s also a matter of personal (subjective) preference. I grew up listening and admiring the sound of the Gibson Hummingbird in the Stones´ records. Of course, if you´re into bluegrass and flatpicking, a Martin dreadnought has to be your first choice.
I prefer Gibsons- I have a Hummingbird Artist. The Martins always have high action in my experience and that plain light spruce color is boring. The low end on a Gibson always is more full. I've heard Gibsons in concert and they send a chill down my spine. I have a friend with several Martins but he always compliments my Gibson though he continues to buy Martins. We guitarists are funny people. I doubt my wife could tell the difference between them but we argue endlessly!
Now, this is simply my personal opinion and doesn't mean much, but I'm moved to say that Gibson's acoustic guitars don't at all compare to the quality of Martin. All one needs do is go to a shop that sells both types of instruments and examine the workmanship of each and their sound quality. The real irony is that Gibsons tend to be more expensive than Martins. I like Gibson's look, but I haven't yet found a J200, for example, that urges me to buy it. I hope my words aren't discouraging.
I actually like the Gibson better in some passages, but you're right - they are very close and I'd give your Martin the nod overall. I'd still like to have a couple good examples of higher-end Gibsons in my collection - maybe also a J200 . I haven't found one yet with the right sound at the right price.
If you as me, Martin has the best sound, hands down. Gibson is definitely a close second. I find its not a better or worse sound, but a different sound. As far as Taylor on the other hand, I have never played a Taylor that I liked. They sound tinny and cheap to me, despite their price tag.
The winner is the Martin, the Gibson has a cool story, yet they have a dampen sound to them, IMHO. The Martin is more resonant and balance. The Gibson seem to me has a more woody sound to me espeically in the bass.
I play a d-28 and the elixir,s really made my sound come to life. I grew up watching my dad play his j45 deluxe and it was a dog but I love the look of a gibson and try to find one I love just never have.My d28 floors everybody who has ever played it. I will own a Gibson too when I find the right one.If there is one
I own a few older Gibsons, a couple top of the line early 60s models and a 72 Heritage (the model not the offshoot company brand), I have had the opportunity to compare them side by side with recent top end Gibsons. Unfortunately there is no comparison, the low end lacks resonance and richness in the late models, striking the low E strings there is an appalling difference, playabilty seemed stiffer also. If you want richness get a Martin or a custom made by a respected luthier.
Nice playing, beautiful guitars! Thanks for posting this. One quick question: Which guitar did you have first, and why did you decide to get the other one if you already had the first one? Did you not like it? Or did you just get a bad case of the G.A.S.? I have the HD-28 and absolutely love it, I will keep it forever. But I am always curious as to what else is out there, and the bird looks like such a masterpiece!
@hogridertom hey man, i had the Martin HD28V 1st. the hummingbird came up for sale at a really good price so i decided to buy it. i preferred the martin, had such a great feel and sound. i have a Martin D42 now and truth be told the HD28 was a nicer guitar. iv owned so many acoustics, Gibson SJ300, Matin OM41, Hummingbirds, J100 and all my favourites have been Martins. don't ever sell that HD28- you will regret it forever!
I have a Crafter DE7 Dreadnought Acoustic. Great guitar.. listing price is around 600 bux but I purchased mine years ago for around 4 something..You can hear how it sounds on my music video on Youtube
Dammit, It won't let me post my links. Just type in Dan Waszay into Youtube and it's the first 2 or three videos.. Also Dan Waszay (The Desert Lust) @ Facebook.com You can hear some of my tunes there as well
I use Martin Marquis Acoustic strings.. gauge 11 or 12.. Made my Crafter sound like it was over 1,000 bux. Nice warm, full bodied projection.. Great feel, clarity.. Great for recording
Strange. I didnt like the stuff u played on the gibson but loved the stuff u played on the hd28. Then it occured to me that its the same stuff. Hd28s amazing.
Gibson a bit more midrangy ,,its very close ,,martin bit more full ,,,,just my opinion ,,and also I have played just about most acoustics and found its just personal preference and how it feels to you ,,,lots of great guitars out there around 1000 buck ,,,,great vid man
my ears sure ain't good enough to hear any difference. i suspect top end music stuff is really only necessary for the 1% of listeners... who have a very fine musical and auditory sensitivity. good demonstration!
Well… Having had just about every guitar but a Martin i thought it an over rated rage to own. 10 seconds on the Martin ? I stand corrected and now will do what it takes to get one. Hummingbird? incredible for their price ! They need to get back in the Line behind …Taylor,Larrivee,Guild ,Martin ,Maton,Collings,Ovation. My point being…Glad i never wasted my money on one .
Go to YT: "Gibson Hummingbird - How does it sound ?" for better comparisons between fine guitars. The micing here is low end. But thanks for the effort.
Hey uncleslash, is the first song you play the theme for that show "over there" that used to come on FX? in my opinion the Gibson sounds sweeter and more mellow the the martin. I like them both but would prefer the bird. Oh yeah I already have one! Lol
@nathoniel01 hey man, thats right. it is the song from over there or at least its supposed to be. we only had here in South Africa for a little bit but i always loved that song! congrats on the bird, awesome guitar man! i personally preferred the Martin. had a nicer feel :-)
@nathoniel01 Theres no way the Gibson sounds more mellow. I can see if you think the Gibson sounds sweeter. But when it comes to mellow the Martin has it beat. Martins never come across well on recordings. You have to hear them live .
@bol316 You must be one of those tone deaf people. Martin's are not mellow they are well balance. With deep bass. Gibson's are muddy and very tinny. Martin has allot of sustain driving power. Go listen to some Tony Rice the greatest flat picker to ever live. Playing the hardest music in the world to play. Listen to Larry Sparks, or any Bluegrass Music. Martin's are not mellow. They are deep, and the hardest driving flat top made.
@bluegrasssingingman Well I have a Martin and they are my fav acoustics. They arent terribly well balanced but I like the way they are balanced. They are definetely very mellow sounding guitars. Thats why I like them. Tyalors for example are too bright and loud. Same with Gibsons. Martins are more smooth. I dont play or listen to bluegrass. I just like rock really. I agree that Martins do have good drive if you dig into them a bit
@bol316 Well they are not mellow. Martin's are deep bass tone. Deep is not mellow. I don't, and won't use a pick up. Pick ups kills the woods natural sound. After using a pick the woods aging is for shit. Maybe that is why some on this psge is saying their Martins are mellow. Taylor guitars are junk. I have heard a few Vintage Gibsons with pretty good sound. None that compare to Martin.
@bluegrasssingingman Bluegrasssingingman, I love my Martin D28, will not electrify it, but I think Taylor makes a pretty good guitar too. It depends on what one is using the guitar for I guess. I use the Martin for playing and writing songs, I use the Taylor for church and worship. I can't really say why I prefer it in that application, but I do. But, my favorite guitar is my D28. Always will be. As you said, none compare to Martin. I "like" my Taylor...I "love" my Martin. I want a Hummingbird.
@CFMD28 Gibson is a lot better then Taylor. Do you know Bob Taylor uses wood screws and shims in the necks,of his Taylor's. To hold the necks on. I can't remember off hand which Taylor it was. It was a lower line Taylor I seen and played. It had no back bracing in it at all. That is cheaply made. Well I don't think it matters when someone plays garbage rock of today, and shit pop country music. I'm not preferring to you personally.Gibson is good. Just lack the drive for Bluegrass music.
@bluegrasssingingman Hmm How Many Great recording was done With Gibsons? Oh and not to mention blues legends. I dont recall hearing any mud either.lol
@eatthemoon13 MMM lets see. Martin is the oldest guitar company on the Market today. Since 1833, the most copied guitar in history. I bet no as many as Martin to your ? I see you like Hank 3. His Granddaddy chose a Martin. So add those songs to Martin, You like Neil Young add those songs to Martin, Clappen add those to Martin. Bob Dylan add those to Martin. Which this can go on and on. All the songs from the King of Rock and Roll add those to Martin also. You like Gibson good for you. Legends.
@bluegrasssingingman Dude i think you just want to argue. I never said i disliked Martins! Martins are my favorite Guitars. But i Also like Gibson AJs and Guilds. The point being made is your hatred for Gibson is just dumb not all of them suck all makers make shitty guitars from time to time. Ive heard some shitty d28s and hd28s.Gibson= Steve Earl, Townes Van zandt,Gillian welch,Lucinda Williams,Chet atkins, jeff beck,Dylan also used tons of gibsons and martins, david gilmour, woody, arlo gutherie
@eatthemoon13 No you commented to me. You like Gibson fine, No all Martins are top Quality, unless it has been abused. Some sound a little better then others. I can take the worst sounding Martin. Bet it sounds much better then the best sounding Gibson. I have never heard a bad sounding Martin. Some sound better then others. I never heard a bad sounding Martin. I believe any Acoustic with a pick up sounds like shit to me. I've heard a few Gibson sound good. None that I'd buy over my Martin's.
@eatthemoon13 I wouldn't own a Gibson. Maybe to just trade off, for a better guitar. I rather have my Martin's. I'd buy a new Blueridge BR-160, before I ever bought a Gibson. I use to own a BR-160. It smoked any Gibson made.
@bluegrasssingingman Not all guitars sound the same 5 d28s will all sound differnent some not worth buying. Im a big martin fan but the gibson AJ is just as good as a hd28 the aj has forward shifted braces. I agree blueridge are good guitars bang for your buck. But not one of them is going to smoke Gibson AJ everyone of the ajs sound great. The only gibson worth buying imho. Not all Martins are great ive played some real sleepers this coming from a martin fan.
@eatthemoon13 All Martins sound like Martins. All Martins smoke Gibson. Gibson is Muddy and Tinny with no Vol. No Blueridge is a great guitar at any price. They are all solid hand built. Real Bone nut, and Saddle. Prewar Scallopped Bracing..Lets see Martin was Voted #1 Santa Cruz #2 The Blueridge #3 On the Market. I'll take a Blueridge BR-160 And eat you're Gibson up.
@bluegrasssingingman I think allot of fellow Martin Fans would disagree with ya on the gibson aj there aint no damn blueridge thats gonna smoke a Gibson AJ. Ive also heard just as many Muddy Martins. Im sorry folks for anyone reading these replys not all Martin Fans are Snobs. Btw i know what a martin can do and i know what a damn blueridge can do. I have nothing against them but id take a USA Built Martin and Gibson any day of the week over a Mass produce Dread from china.
@eatthemoon13 Gibson isn't Massed produced. That is a joke. Go play a Blueridge BR 160 BR 180 BR 260 BR 280. Eat you're Gibson Not much better then a Taylor. You like a Mahogany guitar? BR 140-140A BR 240-240A They will eat you're over rated Gibson's up. All hand built bone nut and saddle, and all solid woods. All prewar shifted scalloped bracing. They are nothing like your junk Epiphone Gibson made in China. Blueridge BR-160 voted #3 guitar on the Market. Martin#1 Santa Cruz#2 Blueridge#3
Gotta give it to the Martin, I hear so much wood I got splinters in my ears...the Gibson is nice and bright, but I hear the strings and a more metallic sound. In the Martin I hear the music.
With a Martin it's all about volume and sustain. With a Gibson it's all about tone. It comes down to what you want from an acoustic. For me, it's the tone. Love my Gibsons!!!
fuckin great guitars :/ i wanna buy one of them in summer 2011 but i cant really say witch one maybe u can tell me witch one u prefer i like the gibson really much cause it looks great and it has a warm sound but hmm a tipp would be great mr :)
@NelfPro hey man- both guitars kick ass! i personally prefer the Martin as it felt better and i liked the sound of the rosewood back and sides but play both over and over. its a tough decision but the nice thing is either way you go you wont be disappointed!
"Walkaways" ...I got to rush away she said I've been in Boston before and anyways this change I've been feeling doesn't make the rain fall...no big differences this days just the same old walkaways..and some day I'm gonna stay but not today!!

Not all Martins are great ive played some real sleepers this coming from a martin fan.
eatthemoon13 6 months ago
@eatthemoon13 All Martins sound like Martins. All Martins smoke Gibson. Gibson is Muddy and Tinny with no Vol. No Blueridge is a great guitar at any price. They are all solid hand built. Real Bone nut, and Saddle. Prewar Scallopped Bracing..Lets see Martin was Voted #1 Santa Cruz #2 The Blueridge #3 On the Market. I'll take a Blueridge BR-160 And eat you're Gibson up.
bluegrasssingingman 6 months ago
@bluegrasssingingman I think allot of fellow Martin Fans would disagree with ya on the gibson aj there aint no damn blueridge thats gonna smoke a Gibson AJ. Ive also heard just as many Muddy Martins. Im sorry folks for anyone reading these replys not all Martin Fans are Snobs. Btw i know what a martin can do and i know what a damn blueridge can do. I have nothing against them but id take a USA Built Martin and Gibson any day of the week over a Mass produce Dread from china.
eatthemoon13 6 months ago

BOTH ARE SOLID..i d have to say martin, just somethin about it,its real close
dempsey981 7 months ago
Gotta give it to the Martin, I hear so much wood I got splinters in my ears...the Gibson is nice and bright, but I hear the strings and a more metallic sound. In the Martin I hear the music.
johnnyaught 7 months ago
I like the Gibson best but both sounded amazing
Sunambra 8 months ago
I hear more definition in tone with the hummingbird. You can really pick out each note in a chord.
van1980 8 months ago
Great playing, but what song was that?
TookieGenesis 9 months ago
i hear no considerable difference... i would assume the prices are similar?
weezyFshady 9 months ago
@weezyFshady About $1000 difference. Hummingbird ~3k. Martin ~2.
van1980 8 months ago
@van1980 then the martin is way better bang for your buck in my opinion
weezyFshady 8 months ago
In my opinion the Gibson has a brighter tone with more sharpness, and Martin has low sounds in it.. :)
Juicefani11 9 months ago
I like them both.
soho2014 9 months ago
The Martin is more pronounced but it sounds a bit shrill. I think the Gibson is more articulate and sweeter.
suncollapse 9 months ago
both are great, but gibson...wow. is 10 times more expensive

Hey, does anyone know the name of the song he starts playing at 1:03? Love the Gibson tone =)
skiny998 10 months ago
@skiny998 its an original. pretty generic chords with open strings for a nice feel.
uncleslash777 10 months ago
Martins have cutting power,Gibson doesn't have the cutting power. Gibson are to tinny.
bluegrasssingingman 10 months ago
@bluegrasssingingman The Gibson is muddy isn't clear and is way to tinny.
bluegrasssingingman 10 months ago
With a Martin it's all about volume and sustain. With a Gibson it's all about tone. It comes down to what you want from an acoustic. For me, it's the tone. Love my Gibsons!!!
larryjackson04 11 months ago
@larryjackson04 Well said. I think the volume is key to making the Martin a great fingerpicking guitar.
rickenbacker03 10 months ago
@rickenbacker03 I think you're right. I've heard that the Martin 'O' models are especially fine for that style. Good tonal balance.
larryjackson04 10 months ago
what strings do you use? :) both guitars sound great but personally i like my hummingbird more then any other guitar :P i guess i got attached ahaha
IanVandale 11 months ago
@IanVandale these strings are Elixer nanoweb 12's. Hummingbird is an awesome guitar man! becomes one of the children.
uncleslash777 9 months ago
Gibson sounded very crisp n clear, martin a little duller to me. Almost like the gibson had newer strings. Both awesom though. Thanks

On the 7th day God rested, so he could play his Hummingbird.
