who, tel me, WHO would have this song on their ipod. like seriously. these people think just being happy is gonna change and save the world. they need a reality check. a good suprise buttsecks will do.
This song was written and produced (along with the video) during the four days of TEDActive in Palm Springs by our fantastic house band, the John Lennon Tour Bus team, and the attendees. It is not meant as a TED talk, but is our playful, collaborative musical response to some of the talks we heard at TED and to the TED2010 theme "What the World Needs Now." This project was part of the program at TEDActive. We had a great time putting it together, and we're quite proud of it, too. :-)
youtube emo's don't like forest hippy's. I myself am old enough to realize that diverse people are interesting, and that's all you have to say about the matter.
The 1st video Ive ever voted 1*. Im really dissapointed tht TED has developed this & puts it under their name. Its very lacklustre & ill thought out. Whilst I agree in principle that the world has a lot of issues which nd addressing or tht cld/shld b addressed, I find it hard 2 believe tht TED endorses something so ill thought out. If there r more families then u need 2 address impotency & population growth and u also have 2 address the limited resources our planet has 2 cater 4 these ppl. :/
yeah lets make the world a better place, one song at a time! proven to work since the hippies popularised the practice in the seventies.
oh wait, maybe we actually need real ideas, real work, real science, real knowledge and tie it together with global, sustained, rational efforts? u know, make technology and conduct science that actually changes and improves our lives?
but that's too hard isn't it. let's just keep wasting time by singing and pretending it's actually useful in some way.
Music is suppose to set a mood and act as entertainment, important part of our society (also helps expand creativity.) So yeah it is useful in some way.
Not a video I wanted to watch on ted, I come to learn, but i don't complain about it. I can see if you wanted to give criticism but your statement is more useless then the song. At least some people enjoy this music.
We're not gonna get any of that until we face facts and reduce our population by as much as eighty per cent. We must stop reproducing like yeast in a barrel or nature will stop us.
Jill Sobule and her songs rock....this one is no exception....Underdog Victorious is great and.I don't think many people know Jill Scobule wrote and sang "I Kissed A Girl". Yeah THAT I Kissed a Girl song that is so popular.
Hey everybody, post this to your Facebook page, email it to your friends & families - keep it going till this the song playing inside everyone's head & the beat skipping in their feet!
This is the most interesting video ever created. Simplicity at it's finest. I want a jet pack really bad...one that runs off solar power of course! Jill Sobule et al. let the creative juice flow. Give us back all that we have forgotten! Jill Sobule changing the world one song at a time. I like it!
I think the world would be so, so much better with every single one of these things. It makes me really sad to read previous comments and seeing that people just believe this to be some sort of propoganda. Does peace, equality, and environmental conservation not sound good to you people?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nuclear power has nothing to do with environmental conversation, as there currently is no clean nuclear power. that's like arguing for clean coal.
'more families' could mean even more growing over population which is already out of hand as it is. people cry about declining birth rates in western countries - good! there are too many people here already anyway. no people will go extinct for quite a while.
romance and positive attitude are invitations to shallowness...
Liberals have a fairy tale view of the world, they are disconnected from reality. They view the world as a series of cartoons, just like in this video.
2:36 Catchy song, cute commercial, RUINED by throwing their political agenda into the mix.
Why does the world "NEED" universal health care? Why do you think I "NEED" to pay your bill? Why do you think you can live however you want, smoke, drink, get fat, not work, not save, not prepare for the future, then expect ME to take care of you. I swear to God these people need to be beat over the head with a copy of "The Grasshopper And The Ant"!!!
One of the biggest problems in Western society at the moment is the constant dumbing down of previously good institutions... such as Education... and now TED itself. Stick to what you're good at guys. You have been losing the plot lately.
@DimitriNakos: - "The world needs a bath after that hippie crap."
Yeah, the problem with the 60's was way too much democracy. Fuck these evil flower power bastards trying to enforce peace onto us with guitars and daisy chains. I say nuke the lot of them before we all start singing along to their brainwashing tunes. /sarcasm
The word does need some of the things in this video... better batteries, more power solutions, more cowbell....
But it has far more things the world does NOT need, at all! More families? Really? What about the mass overpopulation? Faith?! Come on, this is TED, not a place of faith, but of logic, communication, technology, the way of the future... This could have been a great video had they stuck to some of the more specific things we really do need, not faith and love and hugs...
@Tapecutter59 : "More Families ... of all kinds!" at 1:30 and "Faith" is at 2:03 ... I must admit that I didn't notice the "of all kinds!" after "More Families" the first time through... and if by that they mean allowing more gay and lesbian couples to adopt children that already need homes, then yes, I support that... but making more children when there are already so many uncared for children out there is just a terrible idea.
What the world needs now is less people spouting bullshit. It needs more people with a realistic view of things, not more people with their head up in the clouds.
It's nice that people have dreams and of course it's as good as impossible that all this will happen, but it's a reminder of a all the small things that can make the world a slitest bit better place. So, totally don't get the negative attitude towards this. The song was a real feel-good, and it did at lest my day a bit better, and put a smile on my face :)
@ingpia: Exactly it's intended to be a feel good piece not a lecture. The aggressively negative comments say more about the fucked up people posting them than they do about the video.
If you don't like it then move on, no need for childish attacks on what is essentially just a soft sell opinion.
Whoever put this up should have watched it first. It's so annoying to track the text as it scrolls. I had to pause so often that I didn't even want to finish watching the video.
First, I love the message. The video reminds me a bit of the old Schoolhouse Rock animations from ABC.
About the animation. I love the idea, but the images move too quickly from right to left making them difficult to read and/or comprehend. It may have something to do with the low resolution or the computer screen's restore rate. Not sure, but it's blurry.
Overall, it's beautiful and timely. And yes, the world needs more dogs like Kingsley! ;o)
NIce lyrics, nice melody, nice song. Eerie optical illusion at the end as the letters appeared to move sideways. I wasn't sure if they were actually moving or my brain simply thought they were moving!
Nice campaign after balancing a lot of CONS. Although I am a clinic depressive myself so I think those happy thoughts and smiles don't count at all for people like me.
I hope I can buy your new deodorant soon and smell the new fragances
it's not that it is badly done or anything (for something that was put together in four days its very well done). it is just that it's really childish...
What the heck is going on, This video was removed in the morning 30 minutes after it was placed, then now when I see it all my comments from the morning are gone.
What the heck Youtube, are you being naughty again?
What the world needs now is a new form of education.
Utilizing all available networks that technology has provided. Creating a massive online network of students and teachers alike, where every individual becomes a mentor and teacher to someone else, and educational communities form. Learning in this way can then be tailored to the individual, without the focus on general education diminishing.
All things will flow from good solid education. Nothing will succeed without it.
Well, there have been strides in this area, so I wouldn't say all endeavors are foolish.
Renewable energy? YES PLEASE YES! The problem is cost at the moment. Find a way to massively reduce the cost and I'm completely on bored.
I do support both fields and think they would be most effective in unison. Nuclear power is an extremely powerful form of energy. It's one that could one day be safe enough to power our everyday vehicles. Imagine a car with enough fuel for 20 years!
Europe tries to go that way of renewable, some countries are up to 25%.
A nice sun in a desert, many mirrors to heat water, which moves turbines, will do just fine for millions of people, but instead the money is wasted in wars.
The day we effectively master nuclear energy is the day we master the solar system. The next step would be anti-matter and matter reactions, at which point we could venture to different suns.
bill gates has recently invested in development of nuclear reactors that are designed to use the existing nuclear waste the U.S. is having trouble disposing of, estimating 400 years of available energy "just sitting there", there's a ted vid on that recently
not entirely. There may be a much better, safer form of nuclear energy within the next 50 years, if you've watched the recent TEDtalks vieo with Bill Gates.
The goal is to use the more abundant part of Uranium as fuel. Basically, the nuclear waste from our current plants will be the fuel for the future plants. Less handling of materials, safer overall.
Yes, the massive build-up of waste in "retention pools" is very safe -- nope. Yes, the leaking of tritium is nothing to worry about -- yes it is. We have new designs that are totally without flaws -- no we don't. There is no "safe" nuclear energy, maybe 50 or 60 years there will be safe fusion power, but that's a long way off. To put a little child-like drawing in this video and claim we need "safe" nuclear power is a very false picture of what's really what with regard to nuclear energy.
I'm not saying that stuff isn't dangerous. Your comment and the video suggest that nuclear power isn't safe. In reality there have only been a handful of sever nuclear accidents in world history and only 20 accidents period in the US. This is incredible considering the situation. Considering the fact that nuclear power is getting safer and the waste created is getting smaller how unsafe is nuclear power really?
There is no reason in the world why nuclear power can not be safe. Chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, scientist and chemist all work tirelessly to assure their processes are safe.
this is something that should be sung by Britney Spears so that it could get some actual attention and so that little girls and creepy men can have something to listen to, and hopefully it would resonate inside their heads.
Yes...nice words can say anyone...but our actions are the ones who determine the outcome...if you go and vote for politicians, you will never get all these that this clip shows here...We dont need any more nice words, for a better life...we need Action.... Z-Day, 13th March 2010!!!

We need more love, and more reason, and less government, and less mysticism.

im not sure if its just me, but i found the actual animation to be hard to watch. it hurt my eyes as it scrolled by.
i enjoy the message of the video and agree 100%. although im not a fan of the song or the animation.
im glad some people think this way. more people should.

Thank you TED.

What the world doesn't need is this crap song on TED talks.
The John Lennon educational tour bus??
Why didn't they just use one of the great John Lennon Songs? (ie: give peace a chance or imagine)
Johb Lennon's name is becoming yet another brand!!

safe nuclear power? Is that like "clean coal?" Give me a break.
Aiden057 1 year ago
It can be done, we just need to find an effective way to dispose of the waste. Become a chemist, HELP EVERYONE OUT!
welling8l4nk 1 year ago
what about renewable energy, no waste, competition, more workplaces, etc?
The problem of the waste couldn't be solved in the last 6 decades, why still hang on ?
Umbalafum 1 year ago
Well, there have been strides in this area, so I wouldn't say all endeavors are foolish.
Renewable energy? YES PLEASE YES! The problem is cost at the moment. Find a way to massively reduce the cost and I'm completely on bored.
I do support both fields and think they would be most effective in unison. Nuclear power is an extremely powerful form of energy. It's one that could one day be safe enough to power our everyday vehicles. Imagine a car with enough fuel for 20 years!
welling8l4nk 1 year ago
" Imagine a car with enough fuel for 20 years!"
That sounds cheap ;o)
Europe tries to go that way of renewable, some countries are up to 25%.
A nice sun in a desert, many mirrors to heat water, which moves turbines, will do just fine for millions of people, but instead the money is wasted in wars.
Umbalafum 1 year ago
...continuing from "20 years"
The day we effectively master nuclear energy is the day we master the solar system. The next step would be anti-matter and matter reactions, at which point we could venture to different suns.
welling8l4nk 1 year ago
bill gates has recently invested in development of nuclear reactors that are designed to use the existing nuclear waste the U.S. is having trouble disposing of, estimating 400 years of available energy "just sitting there", there's a ted vid on that recently
Cradle2Venus 1 year ago
not entirely.
NitB92 1 year ago 3
Nuclear power is already very safe so yes it has already happened actually.
purplecharger88 1 year ago
Yes, the massive build-up of waste in "retention pools" is very safe -- nope. Yes, the leaking of tritium is nothing to worry about -- yes it is. We have new designs that are totally without flaws -- no we don't. There is no "safe" nuclear energy, maybe 50 or 60 years there will be safe fusion power, but that's a long way off. To put a little child-like drawing in this video and claim we need "safe" nuclear power is a very false picture of what's really what with regard to nuclear energy.
Aiden057 1 year ago
I'm not saying that stuff isn't dangerous. Your comment and the video suggest that nuclear power isn't safe. In reality there have only been a handful of sever nuclear accidents in world history and only 20 accidents period in the US. This is incredible considering the situation. Considering the fact that nuclear power is getting safer and the waste created is getting smaller how unsafe is nuclear power really?
purplecharger88 1 year ago 2
im all for it
xanafanadu 1 year ago
There is no reason in the world why nuclear power can not be safe. Chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, scientist and chemist all work tirelessly to assure their processes are safe.
