To be more specific, This video's audio track there is a melodic (then rhythmic) electric guitar line sitting right on top of the human voice range with overtones masking your articulation. In this case the guitar is so close in the foreground of the mix that if you were to set an appropriate level for the track you would not be able to hear the other instruments. Bed racks with and overall even instrument mix work well. The less instruments the better.
a suggestion for background music...try to use music that is limited in terms of instrumentation registers. In other words..don't choose ensemble music that features melodic lines within the majority of the human voice frequency range. The human voice is capable of frequencies between 90KHz-1100KHz for voiced vowels and 1KHz-5KHz for voiced consonants (articulation and intelligibility)
Hey Dave...great video as always. CTO (tungsten) is color temperature orange and CTB (daylight) is color temperature blue as you said. They're color correcting gels and come in a few different variations like amber, orange, and straw and range from 1/8th to 2x. In my days as a gaffer I had a lot of success with rosco amber and straw cto gels. But I have never used them on LED lights only on florescent, tungsten, and HMI fixtures.
@willwetmoreable I didn't know it was illegal for males to laugh, or maybe you're not from around here. In the US, it's ok for anybody to laugh. It's called being friendly. Nice people do it from time to time. You should try it.
Nice Review Doug the LitePanels are a bit disappointing in this - I bought a Flo-light 500w LED, and I was planning on doing one of these vs the cheaper "fancier" brand LED I'll send you a message when it is up. I couldn't see myself coughing up a few thousand for some LED lighting... I only use it in the summer when it is too hot to use Tungsten
Someone please tell me how Litepanels stays in business. I unfortunately own to LP micro's and they are sitting in a box in my closet unused since the z96 came out.
Outstanding, but on all these video, please reduce the background music! It definitely interferes. Great videos, thanks for sharing great information!
Another useful gel that I would highly recommend for an LED is a minus green (magenta colored). They come in different values (as such, see if you can try which one you would need) and it takes away green, but you don't loose too much light luckily!
I use a couple of these LED lights and they work fine for fill-in lights on mobile video shoots. w w w.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?&products_id=111653 I have to use the lowest settings because they are super bright.
Good review. I have a cheapo unit like this from China that is pretty good but the CTO filter is terrible. You are correct. You need to get different grades of filter including fluorescent corrections to get them close to perfect for tungsten.
The flickering that fluorescent lights produce is caused by the AC power operating at 60 hertz. Since this runs off batteries (DC) this will never occur.
CN-126 plus battery (90min at medium setting) and charger for 50$, amazing piece of CHEAP equipment, a video where I used it a lot!!: watch?v=28ZeAmnWkPQ
I bought one of the cheap CN-126 for about $20-30 (I forget exactly how much.) They're by no means perfect but for the price they're good and nice to keep in your bag of tricks when you go to a shoot not know the layout/natural light etc.
Not having a linear pot on the Lite Pro seems like a huge oversight with at best, minimal build cost savings.
I've been curious about LED light for awhile now. Do you happen to know how big the panels can get? Like can they be used for softboxes? And do you think they would produce a bright enough light, compared to CFL's?
@drumat5280 Actually no, I'm still a student there. I was looking for the logo of the school on Google Images for a presentation and I saw a photo link to your blog that said you went there. Small world.
lite panel is way OVERPRICED, people get a great led lights from: ebay, cowboystudios etc. I've used 3 different led lights from china with outstanding results for: weddings, concerts etc etc. Prices start at over $20 up.
Hi Dave. The CN 160 people are talking about is one you can buy on ebay for about $40. Just look for a LED that matches that price range, and viola. As per construction, plastic. Same kind as the ones you just reviewed. I have to say, yes its cooler. It takes AA batteries, 3 kinds of sony lithiums, and Panasonic Lithiums. In my opinion, they are all the same.
I'm thinking about buying the CN-160 for a long time, i want to use it to shoot at night, in bars with poor light and on the street, basically places where i'm constantly moving and can't walk around with a light stand!
It's much cheaper then those you shown, but my budget is pretty small :P
I have to plug my CN-160 as well. I've used it a few nights events with terrific results, coupled with my Sigma 30mm f/1.4. The batteries I use are Sony NP-F550 rechargeable. I have two, and each one will last easily over three hours non-stop. I have been very impressed. One my least expensive accessory purchases but one of the most used. On my box it lists Nanguang as the manufacturer.
@drumat5280 Yes, plastic. No less quality than the Konova you reviewed. Listed as Neewer CN-160 on Amazon, but on box I received it's different name. Typical of low cost accessories. The dimming dial is on the side and works throughout the whole range as expected, unlike that Lite Panel! I use it on a cold shoe Y-Mount bracket with my Videomic on top of T3i and 561BHDV-1. Great combo for events!
@drumat5280 The CN-160 is a brand-less China made product... very cheap but pretty good performance for it's price (50 bucks on ebay)... a dutch review site gave it a silver award
Wow, thats alot to spend for something you can get very similar products, for a much cheaper price. I have the Neewer CN-126 LED and it was only 31 bucks on amazon with free shipping. It produces a good light, and if the 126 isn't big enough they have a CN-160 for 40 (haven't tried the CN-160 myself though).
Thanks Dave! I have been debating buying several 100 dollar sets of these type lights, and this has just reinforced my decision to save up and buy a good Ari tungston set that will last me a life time. Do you happen to have any reviews that sport some softboxes using both tungston and Florescents? Ive seen both types and I'm curious how they do with video, since they are oftenly marketed toward still photography.
interesting stuff! I was actually wondering about these and how useful they could be for, say, an interview keylight... I imagine that with a touch of diffusion, it could pass for that purpose... ? :)
Boy I have not even seen the footage of this video and already plan to get the cheapo one. I'll use your link so you keep up the good work. thanks..South Tropic of Cancer...O
