Nice Lute! Can you do this suite on it? I feel this music really belongs on it's intended instrument. It adds such a light melancholic character. What do you think?
Actually that lute is a theorbo and is not really able to play this music because of the 1st and 2nd reentrant strings (octave lower than normal). It is mainly used for continuo playing in ensembles or orchestras and is particularly good for accompanying singers. It is debatable what instrument Bach intended this for but it does sound great on the lute because you are able to play the bass notes in the correct octave.
I'm not sure what you mean by portato. I believe it is a bowed string term for the re-articulation of a note with a single bow stroke. If you are talking about the repeated notes prior to the appoggiaturas then I am playing the first one staccato and the second one legato to the resolution of the appoggiatura and trying to lean a little on the dissonance of the appoggiatura.
Nice playing. That's one of my favourite pieces. Beautiful lute too. I've been thinking of getting one. What do you about the nail issue when playing the lute?
That lute is a theorbo which has single courses and using nails is correct. It's great for guitarists to make the transition to lute playing. It's more of a basso continuo instrument and has the most awseome bass sound (160cm bass string length) but doesn't have a huge solo repertoire. Great for accompanying singers, particularly in early florentine baroque (1590-1650, monteverdi, caccini etc.). However a double course lute should definitely not be played with nails.
Ah of course its a theorbo my bad. Yea I love lutes but don't think it's a good idea to part with my nails as I'm still in school for classical guitar performance :)
Excellent. Thanks for reposting. I like this one the best. Technique and musicality are balanced just the way I like it. If you keep this up, you may make it big man.
This is good! A lot who play this I think tackle it waaay too fast, this is almost the same tempo I play it actually : )

No offence intended, but a gigue is supposed to be a dance movement, this is way too slow.

In baroque music some notes should be detached before a legato ones. It is what I mean.

You can still play a double strung lute with fingernails. Stephen Stubbs does it quite well and so do many others.
