I love playing this loud in the car making people think "What the fuck is that?" lol I play it loud not to irritate people, because loud is the only way to play this song.. Fucking with people is just a great bonus!
ATTENTION. Honestly, art like this has not disappeared. I'm from New York, and this is still kind of live and strong. However, it's not in Manhattan anymore. It's moved to Brooklyn.
My mom was part of this scene by accident seeing as how she had moved to the states and lived in NYC in the mid 70's and was raised during the late 70's and 80's. It just happens she was there at the right time. She tells me she used to have a boxs full of pictures, LP's, cassettes, demos, posters, art work and some shirts. But then the 90's came and she threw all of that stuff away and got a job. Now she listens to mainstream radio hits and classic rock, ugggg...
RE: Monks influence? I doubt NY artists in their 20's in 1980 were aware of the Monks. they were barely known (in U.S.) and not rediscovered (I don't think) till the 90s. This song has just simple militaristic kind of beat -- not some style influenced by an obscure band. it just happens the Monks were unusual in how they used it (military beat with kind of an upswing -- don't know the correct word for it, sorry) a lot when no one else was. But DC5 did simple militaristic beat in a way...
Divine. I still remember hearing this on the radio and probably never hearing anything quite the same way again. I fear there'll never be anything quite like it again.
Brutal and frightening...and brilliant in it's simplicity (referring to the song, which first gripped me back in '77). The video complements the song perfectly, and makes you think: what on earth are we as the human race doing? Why do we live the way we do? How can we keep from destroying ourselves? This is art. It's supposed to make you think.

This is just an assumption but I get the feeling that people only say she's a "no talent wannabe" (on every single Lydia video) because she's a woman who hung out with guys in bands. A lot of people think that this makes her an automatic groupie even though she obviously went on to do her own thing. These people are called "dumbasses".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@mordita13 No I think they call her a "no talent wannabe" because she sounds like Hitler raping squiril with a cock made of barbed wire while a baby rotates on speed cook in a microwave. And the band conforms to this as well. This isn't art its just an indie pretentiousness dick size competition.
@wattahhh What the fuck are you talking about?? Hitler raping a squirrel? Do think about what you say like at all? or are you just a retard trying to be funny? You sound like my 13 yearld little sister and all her scene friends, all your saying us just retarded blabbal that dosnt make sense. And the band is probably one of the best punk bands to ever play. So shut the fuck up and think about what you say next ime. Try to make more sense too dumbass
Along with "New Rose" by the Damned and "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles, this makes up the 3 greatest rock records of all time. You don't need anything else. Astonishing video too. Who made it?
I actually wasn't being sardonic. There are only FOUR records you need. THIS, "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles, "New Rose" by the Damned and "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" by Augustus Pablo. If you have some space, add "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, and "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich.
